I have said nasty things about Saban in the past all based on bitterness, but I want him to know I do like him and respect him. He is definitely a class act. Hopefully that can be passed on to him.

I find it hilarious when people in the states think other people from other states are that much different.
This. The differences between people from different states and parts of the country are minimal. We all watch the same TV shows & movies, listen to the same music, study the same things in school, and get pounded with the same cultural and news stuff. I've been to each of the lower 48 multiple times, every major city in the US, and spent significant time just about everywhere in the country. The differences are trivial.

There's a MUCH bigger difference between the rural and urban areas of any given state or region than between the urban areas of two different regions, or the rural areas of two different regions. Small town upstate NY isn't particularly different than small town GA or small town CA. Western Minnesota is remarkably similar to rural or small town Alabama. Both are much more different from Minneapolis or Birmingham than they are from each other. Most people from any place in the US will do just fine living in any other area of the country if they make any effort at all.

Rural Tennessee born and raised, soda was always the most common in my experience. Pop would definitely get you made fun of.

Biggest thing about "Coke" was that if you ordered one, and the waiter said they only serve Pepsi products, you just left and would find a better place to eat.

My MIL is originally from New England. The genuine horror I experienced when I first went to their garage fridge and it was full of Pepsi.

Well, I'm cautiously optimistic with the DeBoer hire. I think he was one of the two best coaches available (Lanning being the other), and I'd be equally happy with either. There was no homerun hire like DeMeco Ryans or Kirby or when we got Saban 17 years ago, but that kind of hire wasn't available this year. Short of getting Kirby, which there was zero chance of, there wasn't going to be another Saban type hire. As a Bama fan, we got to enjoy the greatest extended run in CFB history and have the GOAT for almost two decades. We've been fortunate to experience such a thing. Time to go back to normalcy and start again.

No, it’s an elite job for many reasons:

- As much as I hate to admit it, it’s the most elite college football program of all time;
- You’re in a great state for recruiting and you’re bordering Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, and Tennessee
- You have fans, boosters, alums that will do anything to win…resources, or lack thereof is never an issue
- In-state rival Auburn can be a pain in the ass at times, but Alabama’s program is firmly superior (think of Notre Dame vs. Purdue as an example).

The big downside is the unreasonable expectations. After a loss or two, they’ll want your head on a silver platter. God
forbid those two losses are to Tennessee and Auburn …
Agreed. What sets them apart is that they succeeded during segregation. They are one of the few blue bloods that are elite in today’s landscape (at least under Saban). A lot of the original SEC schools would be equally as dominant were it not for segregation. Instead, future NFL HOFers went to play in the B1G, Big 8 or HBCU.

Bear was able to push for allowing black kids to play and they were able to catch up to the modern landscape of CFB. I can’t think of another SEC team that was able to do that on a national scale like Bama. That’s why as successful as UF, LSU, UGA & Tenn have been in modern times…they’re not a blue blood b/c they weren’t considered a power until the 1990s.

But all it takes is hiring a Mike Dubose/Dennis Franchione/Mike Price/Mike Shula to piss that away. IT’S ALL ABOUT THE HEAD COACH.

Agreed. I think he needs to shore up his recruiting prowess and it should be a fun ride for you. Sounds like he’s a high character guy & w/ a diverse staff of elite recruiters the sky will be the limit.

I’d like you to go through a losing season. It will do you good. 😀

Yeah. I am a "soda" guy, but I live in Minnesota ("pop"). All the folks in Tennessee who work in my group say Soda or Coke.

He also will have to put a LOT more effort into the defensive side of things. No defense/all O doesn't work well in the SEC, doesn't win NC's, and will be thoroughly disliked by old school Bama fans. I'm assuming he knows all this and will take suitable measures to field a team that plays solid defense.

omfg yes...whenever I travel to visit my employees in Tennessee, they have water and sweat tea. ick
I drink sweet tea (only a little sweet, not syrupy) and black coffee with no sugar. My wife drinks unsweetened tea and coffee with enough milk & sugar to gag a horse. We both look at the other as an uncultured savage.

Correct. As much love as the P12 got the first half of his season (deservedly so)…at the end of the day you have to play defense.

Credit scUM for cashing in on this unique season. There was no dominant elite team. The closest was likely UGA but, IMO; their weak ass schedule did them in as they were never truly challenged. Bama avoided the mistakes and upset the Dawgs. They can cry about being the best team all they want but they got beat. Harbaugh should forever be grateful for Bama beating UGA b/c my money would be on UGA to beat scUM in the NC.

It’s bittersweet, b/c ND likely wins the 2012 natty if KSU doesn’t choke to Baylor. That’s the beauty of CFB…any given Saturday. Look at Bama that season. They played one bad half vs Johnny Football. Some crazy plays by the eventual Heisman winner & Bama couldn’t quite complete the comeback. They were obviously the best team in 2012 w/ one hiccup. UGA had a hiccup at the worst possible time.

Now look at the future 12-team CFP. That UGA team is still in the mix. Same w/ the loser of the B1G CCG should they be a 1-loss team. These kids are now basically playing an NFL schedule while (allegedly) balancing a schedule that includes going (logging in) to class. Sumbitches should get paid for shouldering that burden. Gonna be a wild ride moving forward.

I'm old enough to remember the Dubose and Shula years. I was in my last year at Bama when Perkins had a losing season in '84. I'm humble enough. :)
Kudos to you. Perkins & Curry weren’t that bad by today’s standards. But they weren’t Bear. I live in Arkansas where the last time the Hogs beat the Tide was pre-Saban. And even the last time Ark beat the Tide it was controversial. You get the right HC & the it’s fun every year. You make the wrong hire & you see how much “catch up” a program has to make. ND is a perfect example. So was SC between John Robinson’s first stint & Poodle. Look at Nebraska post-Osborne, PSU post-Paterno, Tenn post-Fulmer, Miami post-Butch Davis.

Could it just become another food thread? Maybe the southern food thread?

I am from Tennessee, I live a mile from the geographic center of Tennessee. When I order Coke and get told all we have is Pepsi, my 2nd choice is Dr. Pepper. I am not very fond of excessively sweet tea, it makes my tooth hurt.

West side Chicago. Born and raised.
For some reason I remember calling it soda pop (best of both worlds), but now we all call it by its name.
Sprite, Coke, etc.

Pepsi sucks.

Yeah this board never starts new redundant threads that should be included in an already existing thread
