The cultural difference that would drive me the brink of insanity:

Want to grab a coffee on the way to work and think you can just pay for it and leave?

Fuck you, you will stand in line for 45 minutes while every person in front of you in line talks to the clerk for 5 minutes before paying and leaving.

Now I’m late for work, why is everyone going 45 mph on the freeway?

This was my experience with BTR, LA

He’s a smart first hire post Saban. Though I don’t think he’ll be the next HC that lasts 10+ years at Bama

I’ll be surprised if any coach stays 5 let alone 10. Most of the old guard who would stay are gone. The younger ones have already been hopping all over.

My Bama buddy said there is no illness w/ his wife. I think someone said that may be a reason Earlier in the thread

A couple of days ago Saban confirmed that neither he nor his wife have any health issues that led to his retirement. BTW, he’s still going to have an office at U of AL so he’ll be involved with their FB program for the foreseeable future.

I am going to feel hard done by if Bama doesn’t turn to off fruit for at least 5 years.

I think it was just getting harder for Saban to get a totally dominant roster so he dummy spat.

The keep an office thing sounds like BS to appease players to stop them transferring and there’s no chance he stays living in Alabama

He bought a massive house in Florida recently so I’m sure he’ll be splitting his time there at a minimum.

I honestly dont think its is that great a job.. Saban just killed it.. they dont have the same resources has other schools... just a fact.. and if you lose 3 games?? Prob going to get fired
In a way you are spot on...they need to hire someone REALLY bad...let them suffer, THEN hire a good coach.

How do you follow a guy like Saban?

i can't see the majority of Bama players wanting to stay and play for him. They are gonna have a massive portal exodus now surely??
You mean the guy whose team beat the team that Bama lost to?

Kids can do math. They will stay. Sure a few may leave, but this is a good hire on all fronts.

I don't know where the " bad cultural fit" stuff is coming from unless its pure geography. DeBoer grew up in a small town in South Dakota and was the head coach at the U of Sioux Falls (NAIA) for a few years before getting into low end Division One jobs and then moving up the football food chain.

Is the "culture" in South Dakota that much different than Alabama? They're both God, Guns and Guts territory.
South Dakotans are far better educated. No snark, no lie. They are certainly conservative, but they are not Southern. Those are two radically different things. However, there's overlap for sure. Folks are friendly, they are not big into cities, and they love the outdoors.

That being said, Bama fans just want wins. They don't want a guy with a fake accent rolling in. ;-)

I find it hilarious when people in the states think other people from other states are that much different.

The only only difference i have ever experienced in all of the 48 states i have worked in are... People with money that act arrogant and too good to relate, and 'normal' people that are happy to be alive and relate with everyone.
Then there are those of us that are introverts. we don't care what anyone thinks, and we want the best for those that treat everyone equally well.

Economical differences are taught and created.

Bucees is a mall for tourists. It's got cheap gas and diesel, but the over priced items inside are for the kids...

Except for Berkeley grads. Those people are just weird.

OMG that would drive me insane too. But to be fair it's also like that in South Dakota. (says a brusque and efficient New Englander who married a South Dakotan)

As someone that lives in South Dakota, it is 100 percent true. Midwesterners are chatters. Ever hear of the Midwest goodbye? It drives me insane and I’m a South Dakotan since birth.

Just saw on the uwdawgpound.com site that only about 25% of the players showed for his team farewell meeting and "DeBoer cried the whole time."

No, it’s an elite job for many reasons:

- As much as I hate to admit it, it’s the most elite college football program of all time;
- You’re in a great state for recruiting and you’re bordering Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, and Tennessee
- You have fans, boosters, alums that will do anything to win…resources, or lack thereof is never an issue
- In-state rival Auburn can be a pain in the ass at times, but Alabama’s program is firmly superior (think of Notre Dame vs. Purdue as an example).

The big downside is the unreasonable expectations. After a loss or two, they’ll want your head on a silver platter. God
forbid those two losses are to Tennessee and Auburn …
