Now that the dust has settled.... what if Notre Dame were sitting undefeated right now? Would you have them in the top 4?

If we were undefeated, I would have us in at 4

1. Washington
2. Michigan
3. FSU
4. Notre Dame

What do you guys think?
In this scenario we get Jumped. Not being in a conference would of finally bit us in the ass.

No. This is where ND not playing a CCG would/should hurt them. Why should they get in over a 12-0 Georgia that had to play an extra game against a great team. I’m good with staying independent but it does come at a cost in certain scenarios.

It finally happened but the idea of a 4 team playoff with 5 Power conferences was flawed. Someone is losing out that deserves to battle for a title. Glad this insanity is coming to an end.
Don't know if it was flawed as all conferences aren't created equal at the end of the day. Going to 12 teams is probably great for revenue but there will be hours of talk as to why teams 13-16 didn't make it in. I honestly believe Georgia would be favored over every team that will make the playoffs as well. Is what it is.

Just had a crazy thought that 12-0 ND very well may have gotten left out this year. They would have been at best #3. They would be competing for that spot with undefeated conference champ FSU. 12-1 Bama who would have better wins and 12-1 Texas who beat Bama.

FSU going 13-0 against the weakest SOS of the top teams up for consideration should matter. The ACC stinks and FSU doesn't have a QB. This is such an easy choice for the committee. You can't leave out the SEC Champ.

There will be bitching, just like with bubble teams in March Madness. It fills some tv time. As with the basketball, nobody will really care about the bubble teams.

ND's schedule is also as weak as FSU's this year, the way it played out. No problem with them getting left out at 12-0 w/o a conference championship, although as a fan, it'd hurt.

Imo, 4 most “deserving” teams are

1. Washington
2. Texas
3. FSU
4. Michigan

But the 4 “best” teams are

1. Bama
2. Georgia
3. Michigan
4. Ohio State

There’s a difference.

Why would Washington jump UM? They barely beat a better Oregon and Michigan, already ahead of Washington, wiped the floor with Iowa.

Zero % chance Washington is #1

Too subjective but what can you do? Imagine leaving the Arizona Diamondbacks out of the World Series b/c they didn’t pass the eye test and played a weak schedule. In hindsight, wouldn’t most independent-minded fans agree that the Braves had a better shot at beating the Rangers?

Devil’s Advocate: Why should UW be in over Bama or UGA? They played in a weak conference. Their defense leaves a ton to be desired. They almost lost to Stanford who is arguably the worst P5 team in the nation.

That's not devils advocate, that's differents question all together.

Michigan #1 and Washington #2 are set in stone.

If Bama gets left out it will be kind of funny to see the drama that will unfold, but also kind of ridiculous. They’re probably the best team right now if I’m betting money. I wouldn’t want to be the person that votes Bama out of the playoffs if it’s public. Saban isn’t the guy to piss off. They’d be in my top 4.

No it’s not. There’s nothing to prove that UW is better than FSU other than a head-to-head matchup which could only occur in CFP. If UW earned it, so did FSU.

You think UW is going to jump Michigan who just won 23-0? Because that's the only point I'm making is that they won't. I think you're expanding this beyond that.

I'm not saying who's better/worse I'm just replying to the thought Washington may be #1, there's no way.

I could give a shit about the SEC but Bama and Georgia are the only teams I’m confident would beat Michigan. Put ‘em both in.

Undefeated ND vs. FSU would be an interesting comp.
Most of our best wins are the same. OSU > LSU. But they’d have the extra game and conference title brownie points.

Probably comes down to style points and who beat Louisville and Clemson by more. And their QB situation.

Alas…

Does anyone know what the actual goal is of the CFP committee? Are they supposed to take the 4 best or is it up to them to just pick who they think deserves to be in? I’m guessing within that framework lies the answer to what they’re supposed to do.

The SEC best win as a conference is Louisville. The same Louisville that FSU just held under 3 yard a play and 6 points. No way the SEC should het in over FSU.
