Nightmare scenario, Golden to HC Syracuse, offers Mickens DC job and MF is still stumbling over Parker and Mickens has to accept given timing, because ND would errupt if MF had two 1st time coordinators since Parker is still the guy.

Mickens is freeman’s buddy rather than goldens.

The only way I see Golden leaving is if he is offered an NFL job, I can't see him being a head college football coach.

Isn't Goldens contract for 3 years? I can see him honoring that contract, but if I were ND I'd offer an extension/pay raise to keep him here.

Golden wants to be a head coach again. Whatever gets him to that point -- whether it means staying at ND, going to the NFL to coordinate, or taking a top job he likes -- he's not long for this program.

Does Al Golden have any connections to Syracuse?
He attended Penn State and coached at Temple is about as close as anything I can see in addition to the ND defense having great success this season.

I'm curious if he wanted to be a college HC again why he spent 6 years in the NFL. He probably could have gotten back into the college game sooner. Unless he was truly that selective and Notre Dame DC was the move that got him to leave the NFL.

I have heard a handful of insiders say things like "Golden won't leave unless the job is right, like a power 5 head coach in the northeast." I'm assuming he has family in the northeast and/or just likes living there. But I feel like he could do better than Cuse. If he doesn't want to recruit then he should just wait it out for an NFL DC job.

Apparently, he’s highly respected in the northeast. Depending on how many years he wants to keep coaching a place like SU would have to be his final destination b/c I don’t see him succeeding there. I think we’ve all heard by know he doesn’t like to recruit to the level required to win at a P5 program today. But SU could throw crazy money at him to come & then, in a few years; throw crazy money at him to leave. Champagne problems.

Syracuse, post Paul Pasqualoni, has not been a good place for coaches to win.

Marrone bailed at 25-25 to go to the Buffalo Bills. Robinson, Shafer and Babers did not fare near as well.

Golden leaving would be honestly too much for this program to handle at one time. Bad scenario: Golden leaves, Parker stays. If Golden leaves it would be less likely MF gives the boot to War Daddy.

If this happens, Freeman may as well list his house for sale now and get a head start on things.

I think part of the key to Golden staying is the age of his kid(s). If I remember correctly his wife and kid(s) still live in Cincinnati so there wouldn't be a change of schools. I don't know age/grades but I do think this is a factor. This might keep him at ND until graduation.

If ND had showed up on offense vs UL & Clemson, I think Golden is easily a finalist. Meanwhile, PSU fires their OC & their DC still makes it to semi-finalist round. SMH

Does Al Golden truly want to be a college HC knowing the current grind of NIL, The Portal, Recruiting, etc?

I have my doubts. You get a taste of The League for that long, it's gotta be nice only having to worry about coaching pros at playing football and not having to deal with the minutiae of the college game.

Already posted above about Golden having family ties in the NE, but I also heard someone recently say (can't recall the pod) that Golden flat out said (maybe back when he took the ND job) that he doesn't like what college football has become with recruiting and NIL and the portal. If that quote is legit, there is no way that man takes a college HC gig. I look for him to leave, but only to be a coordinator in the NFL where he doesn't have to deal with those issues.

Haha. Jig beat me to it.

That’s why a job like Syracuse makes sense for him though.
It’s P5 but expectations aren’t that high, so you don’t really have to recruit at an elite level. It’s all three-stars, you just find the ones who want to be there and coach them up.
Job looks like a death wish to me. It will sink his career a la Diaco to UCONN

I think it would be moronic to go to Syracuse.

Make $4-5M yearly, way more responsibility, likely to be unsuccessful. Stay at ND as DC and make $3M a year, have a clear consistent path of success, then look for the right gig if you really want to be HC. MSU isn't in great shape, but the pay increase there could be worth it. I just don't think he's a modern HC that will be successful.

he's never gonna be a HC who gets heavy involved in that side of things. He would delegate that stuff and focus on being a CEO coach like BK
