My understanding has always been that basically they don’t want transfers who - mathematically - wouldn’t be able to graduate in four years.Isn’t the reason they don’t want to do that is b/c they believe it “cheapens“ an ND degree? To which I’ve heard fans & alums say they don’t give a shit. Typical tone deaf ND
It’s not about admissions standards or intelligence so much as about the ability to complete all the required classes and a major in ~8 semesters as an undergrad. In other words it’s about the graduation rate, mainly.
Notre Dame requires courses you are unlikely to take elsewhere (two semesters each of theology and philosophy, for instance), and there may be courses someone took at their previous school that don’t transfer over. Especially if they’re in a major Notre Dame doesn’t offer (like phys ed or criminal justice, to name two common athlete majors Notre Dame doesn’t have).
Basically you have to have enough time left on the clock to catch up with whatever you’re missing when you get to ND, and still graduate on schedule. Which is why first-year transfers can sometimes work but it gets harder the closer you are to graduation. And it’s probably easier if you go to a school of comparable academic profile where more of your transcript will qualify at Notre Dame too.
