To Reaper's point on O'Leary and recruiting.

Prister Inteview with Freeman. Talking transfers.

“(Carter) was a guy that (safeties coach Chris) O’Leary found,” Freeman said. “I really enjoyed watching his film and getting a chance to meet him. He has two years (of eligibility). I think he’s going to be a great fit for us.”

Safety recruiting looks a little different if you consider that over the last 2-3 months he'll have added Carter, Johnson, Talich, TBP, and Urlacher for 2024.

And Harper was going to play Safety until they got Carter, which moved Harper back in to the nickel position.

So what’s his deal? Is he a bust? He can’t get any PT over Brown, Watts or Henderson?

DJ Brown has to sit. He is actually hurting the team with his play. I’m sorry for saying that because I like DJ Brown. But all the missed tackles and missed interceptions is hurting the team and costing them games now.

He’s learning a new position while playing against better competition. It was always going to take some time.

I think the plan was to get him some snaps this year and have him as depth in certain packages. The bigger picture was to have him ready to roll for ‘24 season after a few players in the safety room leave.

But, he’s going to need more snaps somehow. Can’t have him going into ‘24 with less than 100 snaps.

That is a fair point that he is transitioning from corner to safety and fake a huge step up in competition.

And I agree with that he needs more snaps. I can live with him making mistakes as long as he can use his athleticism and actually make tackles from the safety position. Again I like DJ Brown, but he has to sit because his play is hurting the teams. Let’s get Carter’s feet wet. He will make mistakes which I can love with as long as he is more athletic than the current safeties and he is actually able to tackle.

I thought when he transferred he was looking for a place to play at right away

I think a safety duo of him and Watts would be our best combination. Of course this is all projection but if Watts could go back to being the tackler he was last year, I think they would sure up the safety play. Henderson and Brown miss too many tackles. Brown has played better but takes terrible angles in space repeatedly.

I would love that. As long as Carter is a better athlete than Henderson and Brown. I can live with mistakes playing a new position as long as he can actually tackler.

I 100% agree with you that Henderson and Brown are poor tackles, which you just can’t have at the safety position.

I don’t think Brown has players better this year. He is hurting the defense and hurting the teams chances of winning games.

Side question. How come Ryan Barnes never got moved to safety? From spring games he seems like a good tackler. Is he just not mentally able to play safety?

Brown and Henderson are I’m sure assignment correct but it doesn’t matter if you can’t make the play

Carter needs to be playing over them, in a small sample he will tackle

Yes Carter will tackle. The only play I can recall him making all season he got called for targeting.

The whole argument for DJ Brown is he's a passable athlete who won't make plays but doesnt make mistakes. After his awful game yesterday it's going to be hard to justify giving him snaps

Awful vs duke second half, even more awful vs osu, and may have outdone himself vs Louisville… he’s playing really bad

Who in the secondary does tackle well? Even the AA CB, Ben Morrison; has looked bad trying to tackle this season.

We missed Harper last night. Any idea what happened to him?

Does anyone know is it normal for teams to not tackle during practice
The NFL largely doesn’t tackle in practice - he’ll, they barely have padded practices anymore.

Tackling is poor at all levels of the game.
