My concern is the players that haven’t really ever played good, played bad today … Henderson, Lewis, nana, etc… our depth isn’t as good as I hoped

He can’t tackle. The easiest most used option on the field. He can’t even borderline read defenses.

People want to know why he isn’t on the field more these are the reasons.
Keep in mind all these same things were said about Marist last year.

I hope he lives up to the billing, but at this point, I think the coaches know way more about what they see day to day than anyone that rated Jaylen as a recruit. Now is what matters.

How many snaps did he have? In looking at the stats, he was not involved in any tackle. Hard to believe.

Marist and betrand aren’t starting because they’re good, they’re starting because our backups aren’t good/ready … kinda sucks

Kiser had 10 tackles and was bad today, betrand type game
This is just dumb.

It you still don’t think Bertrand is good, just stop posting & acting like you understand football.

Those are the 3 who were LB Coaches and DC’s who think Bertrand is a starter at ND.

You are a message board poster who doesn’t understand football.

You don’t get chances to play in games unless you improve in practice
I feel like that's how the Kelly regime was run. There's no harm in letting kids like Sneed make mistakes on the field when you're playing teams like Central Michigan

I'm going to feel much better about next year if Sneed gets experience this year when (if?) Bertrand/Kiser/Liufau are all gone

Marcus has talked about the importance of experience countless times when talking about Hartman and himself. He understands the value of being thrown into the fire even if you're not perfect in practice

He's a starter due to necessity and also not that good. Both are true. Most ND fans have severely overrated Kiser and JD. And most are still excited for them to come back next year (assuming Kiser doesn't still go 1st round after his 4.50 combine explosion).

Understanding the defense/ position better than everyone else does not automatically make you good.

Just because someone is starting doesn’t mean they’re good

You don’t see me saying someone else should be starting over him, even Kiser because I don’t think we have anyone better or ready.

I think you’re just foolish thinking if they start they must be good! Frichan Clarence Lewis started a lot last 3 years and he’s terrible. Buchner started, terrible, pyne started, terrible.

If you think betrand is good then you don’t know good football. Tommy eichenberg is way better than him. That was a miss on nd for not taking him. Watch the top teams play, their lbs aren’t constantly late and slow like betrand.

Exactly this. Not sure any of our top 3 lbs get drafted.

Jaylen Sneed is going to be fine IF he can transition from “see ball, get ball” to actually playing technical football. He’s only a second year guy, it’s way too soon to write him off entirely.

I just hear that Post Malone song ESPN is using as their theme here when I read this.

Thank you.

He barely played last season, just getting his feet wet this year.

Don't think too much into it.

Agreed! BUT it sure in the hell does help TEAM-WISE with getting everyone in the correct position and assignment along with having a good feel for what is coming from the opposing team's alignment!

Pro Football Focus says 25 snaps, zero stops, one missed tackle.

Keep coaching him up.

Sneed's 40% missed tackle rate is the poorest among those in the regular defensive rotation, but linebacker JD Bertrand, expected back this week after missing the Central Michigan game with a concussion, has the fourth-worst rate of missed tackles at 26%.
Sixth-year safety DJ Brown, held out against Central Michigan as he nursed a sore hamstring, is due back this week as well. Brown, however, has struggled with missed tackles throughout his
career.
The surest tackler on the Irish remains graduate linebacker Jack Kiser, who has been charged with just one missed tackle in 29 tries (3.4%)

This dude is an elite athlete but he needs to learn to play with some control or he is going to waste his talent. 3 or 4 times yesterday he was fast to the play but couldn’t control his body to make a play. I am not sure if that’s on coaching or him. God I want him in the field, he would be a huge difference maker if he could play under control.

Keep working hard young man!

I think he really showed good flashes in the game. I'm more optimistic about him than ever before

Playing time can help with that. End of the day it comes down to the player. Early in Liafu’s career, he was similar; an uncontrollable heat seeking missile. Over time he honed that in. I love Sneed’s energy and nastiness. Big year for him coming up.

I actually thought he played really well and was all over the field yesterday. He is really explosive and twitched up. I didn’t think he was out of control and ran himself out of plays. I guess I need to rewatch the tape.

There was one play where he dropped back in coverage and closed on the tight end, he ended up missing the tackle but he stopped the momentum of the TE and others were there to clean it up. The miscues Sneed has are no different from the dozens we see a game from the starting LBs. The difference is, he hasn't played 2000+ snaps like the upperclassmen and there's flash and potential. I'm really rooting for him and Ausberry because people have written him off and are already calling for KVA to start and Drayk to play Will. I personally think he's got the most potential in the LB room and I want him to start next year. He just needs to play and gain experience.

I don't know that he'll ever be the perfect version of what he can be with those athletic tools. Playing LB is hard! But getting him to a point that you can trust him in big games would be really good for the defense - look at how he flashed against USC.

Someone on II noted in the pre-game video that it wasn't a coincidence that he got his most run in games against Tennessee State, Central Michigan or Wake Forest.

Actually thought he played the passes really well in coverage yesterday. There were a lot of check downs and crossers that weren't- because Sneed recognized and blanketed his guy. Huge stepping stone game for him IMO.

Agree. It was his best game from a mental aspect. He was in control and the right position more times than not.

Going to be interesting to see exactly how he fits in the defense next season.

The announcers of yesterdays game, mentioned that he sort of plays everywhere. No true fixed position, but doesnt really excel at anything to this point.

For the amount of snaps he had this season (I believe close to 300) I was hoping for more havoc plays. He did make a jump this season, albeit a small one. He needs to make a jump this off-season. It may be a “now or never” situation as there are other LBers that will push for an expanded role.
