This is the type of game we’ve all been hoping for. Downhill running attack with a competent QB who can make a defense pay for creeping up to stop the run. Everything seemed crisp and north-south out there. Many is difficult to completely shut down but we saw guys playing fast and flying around the field. I think the MFMF culture is much different than BK and is taking root in the program. We’ve got some big, strong, fast, and tough players out there who are nasty. I’m not going to get carried away but we should be a damn good football team this year.

Colzie showed up-good news.

It's Navy followed by TSU. Irish should be looking good. I can't wait for the initial test against NCST. Digging this schedule.

You should be thanking Rees. He built this offense, recruited pretty much every starter and brought Hartman in. It's basically still his scheme too with a few wrinkles thrown in. We're fielding one of the most experienced units in CFB this year because we had to play so many Freshmen and Sophomores the last two years. Rees set the table so Parker could eat big.

You're kind of glossing over the main "wrinkle" in that they played from under center a good amount of the game. That's a pretty huge departure from Rees.

Is that why we had a dominant OL? Is that why we have a deep backfield? Is that why we have talented young receivers? Is that why we brought in an experienced proven QB? That was all Tommy's cooking.

The cooking doesn't happen in a few weeks of fall camp. It's done over seasons of experience, which is what our offense has for the first time since Long left gaping holes in recruiting in '19 and '20. You're not supposed to be starting several freshmen and sophomores in '21 and '22, but that's what we had to do and now the offense is set to explode this year.

My only nitpick of the game would be I wish they had put Angeli in a drive or two sooner when it was obvious the game was in hand and let him run the offense.
Also wish there was a little more penetration from the DL but overall the D was solid. Lots of young guys played everywhere except QB which should be a priority in these early season games.

I know it was a clean drop, but did anyone else think Merriweather on that screen was an odd personnel choice? If they wanted a big WR to just pick up 5 or 6 yards in 1st down Id think Colzie or Thomas. If they werte going for a house call, some better in space like Tyree. Merriweather should be all posts, slants, outs and go’s at this point. I do hope they dont give up on him early though. Let him work through it and figure it out while pushing him hard.

This is not that ND team but I'm just saying, it's week one against an opponent that was overmatched on all 22 positions.

I'll be more excited if ND blows out NC State.

I have had enough time to digest this game:

Great games:
  • Hartman (near perfection besides an underthrow to Merriweather)
  • OL (no penalties)
  • WRs (-1)
  • RBs all looked good but my top two as the season wears on: Estime, Price. Payne and Love are next men in.
  • No TE catches? This will surely change next week.
  • defense as a whole did excellent limiting Navy to 3 points

This is all with a huge caveat that we don't know what Navy is yet. Maybe they'll rip off a number of wins and shut some teams down moving forward. Maybe they are trash and we trashed them. Way too early for me to mainline koolaid but the next 4 weeks will give us a lot of answers.

The secondary had to sell out to stop the run so it was expected they'd get beat on occasion. We were fortunate Navy wasn't able to convert on a few of those plays. I hope we got out of that game injury free.
