So you're saying it's the golfer and not the equipment? Man! Hoped I could buy my way out of a shitty golf game. lol
Haha, I constantly have this argument with my brother. He's always buying new clubs and I'm always kicking his ass with my relics.

I figure at best, I could shave a stroke or two with the latest and greatest clubs, but that's probably it.

It's proven over time that the new tech is helping to lower scores, but those advancements don't come with every new club/ball variation, as you know. That's just good marketing.

Point being, depending on how old your clubs are, you may surprise yourself just how much better you can get. The new drivers are insanely good at reducing spin and allowing for maximum forgiveness.

Just a few years ago, I went to a driver fitting at a local course. For years, I played with a Titleist 975J driver (2001-ish release)....so you're talking almost 20 years old at the time of the fitting. Same exact swing, but tested over various brands and shafts, I legit gained 25-50 yards across all drivers. I hit the new (at the time) Ping and Titleist drivers 50+ yards further and with tighter dispersion. It was insane. I bought the Titleist right then and there (love the brand, the sound, the feel).

*With that said, to anyone else reading, I'll still advocate for lessons over new clubs any day.

Oh, I have no doubt. And, driver is probably the "biggest area of opportunity". I'm older now. When I was in my 20's and 30s, I could easily drive it over 300, even to 350 sometimes. Now, I'm over 40 and my swing/flexibility I'm sure is slower. It's a good drive if I can get 290-300.

Would a new driver get me 20-30 yards back? Probably. Be more consistent in the fairway on mishits? Probably. Overall lower my score consistently? Probably. Is it worth the $500+ investment? I'm not so sure, haha.

Those are bombs even at 290-300.

The average distance for a Tour pro is 300. I think the average distance for most male golfers (mid-handicap) is like 230-250.

SDIrish is a former or current PGA pro, confirmed.

Save the $500 and spend it on more rounds of golf!

Haha, I mostly chalk it up to playing at higher elevations. 3000-5000 feet. Or being 6'3, 230?

Doesn't the pga average take into account all holes that are not Par 3? So, they may be hitting 3 woods or irons off the tee to hit landing zones that still goes against that average? I may be wrong on that.

I was speaking driver only.

The all drive average is usually around 290. 300 is the driver only average.

Lol. I'll wager the elevation over size as a plus factor. Rory, JT, Rickie.....are all my size and absolutely pummel the ball.

I actually looked up their height/weight the other day to get a sense of their size as compared to my 8th grader. Needless to say, he needs to get his $hit together and start driving it as far as them, haha.

Just bought new sticks. Was a difficult decision but once you see the numbers at the swing fitter, it was a no brainer. Was a fun process, swung 5/6 brands, narrowed it down to two and then swung for another 30 minutes.

I have played a couple rounds with the T200s and i have scored well but the learning curve compared to my '08 AP1's. AP1s were more forgiving on a slight miss hit where the T200s aren't. But the reward on the t200 is quite nice when pured.

Hard to beat a flushed forged iron shot.

I went through a similar process with my fitting. Hit the AP3s better but couldn't stand the look, sound, and feel of the cast iron. So I got a mixed bag: AP2 PW-5i, bent the 5i stronger to close the gap, AP3 4i and 3i. To this day I hit my entire bag of wedges and irons in 15 yard increments.

Just got back into the game after taking 20 years off to use the time to do kid things. Bought a Callaway Paradym and a used set of Callaway fusions. The best part is the kids, now 17, 22 and 26, are getting into it with me. So now its a new way to spend time with them and i'm loving it.

Don't have the length i once did, but my short game is steadily improving. My handicap stinks but i'm a par handicap on cursing.

Nothing better than playing with your kids.

My go to for a bad shot is to just yell “F*#k off!”

Got my first career eagle last week. Chipped in on my third shot on a par 5 from 77 yards.

Best part is, I still shot a 47 :ROFLMAO:
That is how it goes! I am sure when (if?) I ever get my first hole in one, it will read on a card with a lot of bad geometric shapes. Have been very close more times that I can count, but never in the cup.

I've been pretty close as well, had one earlier this year in May with a ball mark about 18 inches from the cup, and had maybe a three foot put for birdie.

I feel you on the scorecard. I have made strides in my ball striking but still don't play consistently enough to shoot in the 80s regularly. I often answer a birdie or a par with a double, drives me nuts.

I play far too much not to have one, lol. But then again, my cousin is a 2 index (scratch at one point) didn't get his first until this summer. He's 35. My dad had 2 and he was a 25 index. It is coming soon!

True story: I "caddied" for my dad a lot on weekends growing up. Once when I was 12 he finally let me hit a ball of his. It was the first time that I ever swung a club on a course. About 65 yards out. A little chip shot that bounced off the stick and in. I remember him giving a little grumble and I left thinking golf was an easy sport.

I've been playing consistently now since I was 22, so about 8 years. Still, the best shot I have ever hit by a mile.

Humble brag: I have four eagles this year and tied my personal best of three birds in a row last Saturday.

Still no ace tho.
I missed an ace by about six inches. I'm a very mediocre golfer. Ball must have missed my an inch or two. Meant the world to me to get that close. Made me happy to have a tap in.

Keep it up sir. Glad you are doing good work.

They played the back tees today, which didn’t help cuz he’s not very long yet. But he did amazing. Shot 115 on a course with a ton of hazard/water. 3rd best on his team. Proud dad!
Good for him, and will likely only keep getting better the more he plays. Hope he enjoyed it! It's a little nerve wracking the first meet or two but glad to hear he put together a solid round for his team.

we should tee it up! i am in the same boat.. with doubles and triples to accompany! I can shoot 74, and then can easily shoot a 96 like i did last friday. I blame the upright 2 degrees on the new irons, still getting used to em... but we all know the real answer.

Thanks, lots of room for improvement still, both on the mental side and physical side, but he’s on a good trajectory. Seems to love it and is excited about it, which he hasn’t been about very many sports to this point. Hopefully he sticks with it and gets better.

He has a “conference meet” at a pretty challenging course on Thursday. We’ll see. Fingers crossed.

34/50 today.
The 4 Roses small batch caught up with me on the back.
Hopefully our Irish have a better second half than me.
