@Dale, I appreciate you my guy. I think you have great takes, and I think bring good perspective. Maybe our playcalling is an issue, or execution. But I’m telling you this Red Zone take was incorrect imo.

What was my take? That was almost entirely factual statistics.

He came back in on special teams after his injury, yes? Didn't see him on the field much in the second half, though maybe I missed.
So done with Bertrand I'd be fine with Kollie taking a lot of his reps from here on out.

I dunno man. I saw that play where someone (Liufau?) had his arms around their QBs ankles and Bertrand had a clean shot at him. Instead of blowing him into next Tuesday, Bertrand overran the play, QB escaped and ran for a first down. Agree the targeting non-call was the right call though.

On a 4th down no less. Maddening.

Prister was on IB and they were discussing GAs impact on recruiting(referencing LB specifically) and he said they have a big influence. He said it wasn't only Laurinaitis but Nick Lezynski did a great job recruiting. Then when on to say "That's why Kollie probably ends up at Vanderbilt." Driskell said he didn't want to get into it but he hasn't been to practice. So some smoke unfortunately....

That's more than smoke. If Prister's just casually throwing out that Kollie is leaving for Vanderbilt to have to think that it's nearly a done deal that he's leaving.

I've read elsewhere that Kollie is frustrated for having been passed up by younger linebackers amidst a position "battle" that isn't really a battle.

So on one hand, I guess devil's advocate would say that if he's getting passed up by younger guys, then we'll be okay.

On the other, it's not a good sign that a guy transitioning to "veteran" status, and who has shown flashes of skill previously, feels frustrated by the lack of legitimate opportunities to work his way up the depth chart via position battle... particularly considering that the linebacker unit needs to get better and more consistent as a whole.

This seems like a situation where Kiser has been playing more WILL and Ziegler's move to Mike means it's Sneed at Rover or a nickel on the field. Then Bertrand/Ziegler at MIKE and Liufau/Kiser at WILL maybe?

We definitely seemed to develop LBs better before clarke Lea became DC. I think we need a LB coach who isn’t DC or C.

I think what you meant to say is we haven't been developing LB's since Lea was DC.
What I mean is since Lea became DC and beyond then the LB coach has always also been the DC and the LB development has not been great.

I know, I was being facetious because I think you're nuts.

2018 was Tevon Coney and Drue Tranquill. 2019 was JOK, White, and Billal (masterful job to get that guy to tie for 2nd on the team with 10 TFL). For perspective, we only had one guy in 2021 and 2022 with 10 TFL and that was Foskey. Not a single LB since Lea left has had 10 TFL in a season and Lea got that out of Asmar fricking Bilal. Incredible.

JOK/Coney/White/Jamir Jones/Tranquill? Lea did a pretty good job with them.
I think those guys all developed at least their first year or two under a coach who was full time LB coach rather than DC and LB coach. (I also think it’s a stretch to add White and JJ to that list).

More than the true freshmen last year? That’s not saying much.
Was responding to a comment that basically said “we have depth so this is fine.” We do have some depth - and hopefully talent - but Kollie is pretty much the only one we’ve seen actually do things.

Clark Lea was an LB coach for 1 year. White was a .84 on 247, for him to have received an NFL contract is absolutely a feather in Lea's cap. Jamir Jones played in 17 games last year he was also a .84 on 247. Lea took guys who (based on strictly star rankings) should have never enrolled at ND, and turned them into players worthy of receiving NFL contracts. Those two guys are the lowest rated LB signees since 2016.

Jamir Jones wasn't a linebacker

I don't give a shit who stays or leaves as long as the overall LB play is more impactful. The only thing they seemed to really excel at last year was getting absolutely swallowed by blocks.

We gotta make room somehow this doesn't surprise me at all tons of LB depth
We would have no 5th yr or 4th yr Srs at LB next year … we’re losing 3 lbs, 3 starting lbs after this year. would be nice to return a starter. The way the lbs played last year none should have been penciled in, yet it sounds like all 3 were
