"No doubt there is some blame on Hillman but I'm disappointed in ND's handling of this one. Just my two cents.

Put it this way: I'm told they could have admitted him and chose not to." - Loy

Reminds me of an audition for a stool softener commercial I did years ago.

My line was 'life is hard....but your stools don't have to be'.

ND football needs a stool softener.

I always thought the admin and athletic department were an intelligent, consistent, well-oiled machine. They acted by the book, to a fault. Unwavering in their standards, etc.

Now this offseason is making me think they're just a bunch of lazy-ass dummies. They're acting like bureaucrats. Hey I'm here for a license photo! Sorry bub it's 3:40 on a Friday, you think I'm gonna do that now?

i guess the guy gets a pass on everything because it will always be the Administrations fault.
I mean if Swarbrick expected Freeman to have the same success as Kelly with the same amount of support he's insane. So at best the admin has part of the blame and at worst they are actively sabotaging MF.

Lloyd said the coaching staff had nothing to do with any of this. So the blame spectrum has Brandyn on one side and the admin on the other. Considering ND reportedly "could have admitted him and didn't" I'm going to move that slider pretty close to the admin side.

"hey son, you're too stupid to get into ND. Come to Michigan"

Grant Hill went to Duke because Georgetown was going to make him jump through a bunch of hoops that Duke didn't.

I guess Grant Hill is stupid and Duke is a lousy sschool.

You can bet your ass off the Duke basketball isn’t in the same universe as ND football and academics.

I just don’t personally see how having admission standards is going to really be something schools can negative recruit effectively. It may factor into a recruit’s decision as per your example, but I don’t see how Brandyn Hillman is any different than the last 50 years of ND admissions. In fact, I think our response is so negative because this is the first time it’s happened in a while since the admission standards have become less stringent for athletes.

And, if Freeman leaves after 12 seasons and that many wins, we can have this conversation.

We’re lowering expectations in real time for the guy that wants to challenge everything. It makes no fucking sense. He’s not even winning as much as the last guy. Once he gets there and can’t quite get over the hump, cool. Let’s bump this. But, we need to stop acting like Freeman is this proven HC and all the problems are out of his control. From where I sit. We just watched the last guy do pretty darn well. Freeman should start by getting us back there before the excuses come.
I think if I posted this post I would have 20 downvotes.... Interesting that the Admins and Mods have opinions as widely divergent as the posters at large.

I think many bought into Driskell's BS that Kelly was the worst coach ever and Marcus being hired he would walk on water. Many fans don't want to see the softness and inexperience in this coaching staff and the obvious holes on the defense. Some are saying 11-1 season as an EXPECTATION.... unbelievable.

You mean they work with their basketball program far more than ND does with their football program?

Gee, what a novel concept.

tOSU will come calling at some point, and I would think Freeman will have a lot of reasons to go back to the Buckeyes so he won't have to deal with situations like this anymore.
Wait....why would he go to OSU when he is clearly positioned to chase National Championships here???? After all, that is the "Program's Stated Goal".....

The shining beacon of morality in College Athletics, The Duke University Blue Devils!

Don't bag on them to make you feel better about ND screwing it's football program.

It's an elite university that actually works with their flagship athletics program.

I'm not doing it to feel better about ND. You can be critical without advocating to be more like Duke basketball, which has been one of the dirtiest in the sport over the past 30 years.

I'm all for widening transfer acceptances, admissions standards (even if they took Hillman on a probationary basis that would have been better), and allowing FUND to do up front payments (within reason). No reason to go down the whole "Let's do it like THEY did it" rabbit hole, though.

If OSU is going to hire Freeman that's because he's won a playoff game at ND, otherwise you're smoking meth and not good meth - like EJ Holland copium level grade meth.

(We're talking about Ohio State right? The school that hired Urban Meyer AFTER he won at Florida?)

I don't think Freeman needs to win in the CFP to get a serious look at OSU. Call me the Dumb Moron but there is tremendous desire (and pressure) to have diversity in the college ranks. Freeman is an OSU NFL alum....

And OSU knows ND isn't serious about chasing Nattys like they are. Their recruiting platform and support is 10X ND's and they will give Freeman a break on recruiting on par with Kelly.

You continue to ignore the problem.

Freeman's primary strength is being blocked heavily by NIL.

That problem isn't going away if Freeman is let go. Until ND addresses this problem, it's going to continue to be an issue.

Stuff like what's happening with Hillman only helps to exacerbate the issue. Kelly simply had to deal with getting kids in, but Freeman has to not only deal with getting kids in, but also staving off the threat of them being tempted by big-time NIL money. If Kelly had Freeman's tenacity on the trail, he'd be good, because he didn't have to worry about having to out-bid other schools when his program isn't willing to engage in upfront NIL, because NIL wasn't a thing for pretty much his entire tenure.

If you don't think that isn't an issue that is foreign to the Kelly regime, I don't know what to tell you. And again, it isn't something that is going away. ND will have to address eventually if they wish to compete.
You don't think the 4 losses last year and the stupid lack of support in this offseason didn't help the situation with recruits??
