Let's be honest tho - Freeman is only saying that because he has no choice. You think if some ND-approved collective backed the BRINKS truck up to the Gug and said, "go get us a top-5 class" Freeman would decline? You think he wouldn't have fought for Keeley or Mpemba or even Fiske? Let's be real. I'm sure Freeman's saying much different things when cameras aren't rolling.

Agreed.
And the thing is, these things don't have to be mutually exclusive.
I think ND needs to tread lightly with going all in with NIL and guaranteed deals.
However, the idea that everybody who's taking the guaranteed NIL is just looking to instant gratification and thus wouldn't be a fit is nonsense. You can have both.
The reality is that, while ND is a great institution with a lot to offer a young man, they have several options, and that guaranteed NIL is just an additional factor that many schools can play that ND chooses not to.
You can only play the "ND is special" card for so long. Young men aren't just building long-term relationships with ND coaches and the institutions. They're learning all the unique qualities about several universities. But if they can gel with that and they can provide that little instant gratification on top of it, then that can be enough to tip the scales in their favor.
Freeman has to be stomping away at this for the administration to ease up and let the collectives and boosters do more. It doesn't mean going full A&M, but ND can't keep losing guys to NIL. The majesty of ND only goes so far.
