Why wasn't Washington retained by OSU? Did the new OSU DC bring staff from OK. St.?

Yes/No. Knowles himself will coach LBs. There is a rumor out there OSU tried to retain Washington as some sort of Co-DL or probably made up title like pass rush specialist or run game coordinator or something to wait out Larry Johnson retiring and he did not want to.

Do you all think the DC is lined up already and just waiting to be announced given the DL coach has been hired?

In that case, gotta be Belk given the chatter.

If Kirby was pushing hard for Washington and he was Freeman’s #1 choice then hard to disagree with the hire.

I'll admit I wasn't fond of hiring a guy that got fired from Ohio St... But reading on it sounds like this is good news. Hopefully moving back to coaching d line will be what he needs. Sounds like from a recruiting aspect we couldn't have asked for anything better. Let's hope it pays off

I don’t think fired is the correct word. Knowles, the new DC, will be coaching linebackers. I guess OSU coaches were pissed that Washington was the odd man out and they even tried to create a position for him.

I don't like that he was squeezed out, but out of all the former Ohio State coaching debris floating around out there, he's the best of the lot. Washington interviewed for the Tennessee DC job not long ago.

When Day took over for Pope Fingerpoke, Washington was one of the first he brought in with him, so surprised he was part of the recent purge. I think Washington could wind up working his way up or out of the staff, though, and he's probably very hungry now to do so considering he got the bounce at Ohio State. I hope he proves them wrong and then some.

I'm up and down on this hire. Washington doesn't scream "great DL hire!" as nothing on his resume actually screams great DL hire. But, he has some continuity with MF, and he has coached RB's, ST's, LB's, and DL. So maybe Washington is simply just a good "coach," which obviously has value.

For those wondering why hire position coaches before a coordinator, I think the answer is because it is MF's staff and team. If he sees Washington as a guy he wants, then he should absolutely hire him. The coordinator still needs to get behind MF's vision and plan, regardless of wether he brings in 3 of "his guys" or none of "his guys." It's akin to recruiting players. If you identify a player you really want, then take him- 10 times out of 10. Don't wait and hope another better player may come along.

There was nowhere for him to go. Larry Johnson is still the DL coach and Knowles will coach LB’s. He may have been coaching out of position as well. Just waiting for LJ to retire but he’s not. His knowledge, what he learned from LJ, coupled with Elston’s teachings could take our DL group to the next level.

I like what I read on Belk...... Is there smoke to him being the guy for DC or where is that news coming from?

Pete Thamel saying he will also have the title of Defensive Run Game coordinator.

With Taylor gone it could lead it's way to a title promotion that would be needed to poach him.

Assistant Head Coach for Offense/Running Backs

That’s his current title so I would imagine making him AHC/Run Game Coordinator/RB coach? I know it’s a long shot but fun to think about.

He won the Sonny Styles recruitment like a month or two ago lol. I believe CJ Hicks liked ND but I think he was the coach he wanted to play for most so we didn't beat him for Hicks either.

So we've upgraded OL, ST, WR, and now DL.

Save your sharts, this is what's called winning amidst chaos.

The main reason I wouldn’t be optimistic on Alford is because they could have already done it. Alford RBs, Taylor WRs was the theoretical right? I guess Elston gone means more titles (and money) now but the opening isn’t actually new here

Old Elevenwarriors article said that he interviewed and actually turned down Tennessee for the DC position to return to pOSU.

I'm not sure coaches are as enticed by all these extra titles as some believe they are. At a certain point, people realize it's like VP titles for those working at a bank- every swinging dick has "Vice President" in their title. Money and opportunity are what it often boils down to. If coaches are offered that, I don't think they're as worried as about (often) superfluous titles attached to their job.
