Hey guys I’m seeing NIL being referenced. Can someone explain it to me. Is it going to hurt the Irish or help us in the long run.

There’s already a thread for this where you can get caught up.

This, but to answer your question directly:

1. Texas A&M and Texas went HAM on abusing the guideline in Year 1. Other teams started reacting to this late in the year.
2. We will know a lot about its affect on ND in Year 2 as other SEC schools, Ohio State, USC, etc. start ramping up their NIL.
3. It's unknown what the marketplace is going to be like for recruits, but I would imagine there is a steep NIL dropoff for kids coming out of HS from tier-to-tier. Five star unicorn types probably have almost unlimited NIL potential, top 100 players probably have a ceiling around what Texas A&M is currently paying, top 300 players likely below that, and I don't think there is much of an NIL market at all for 3-star guys past a certain point.
4. The bigger issue will likely come into play with what we're seeing with guys like Caleb Williams -- freshman who put themselves in the portal after having a big season and then go to the highest bidder. I bet someone like Bryce Young would command multiple millions of dollars if he were to put himself in the portal.
5. The most unpredictable part of all of this is that the kids get agents now who will warp and affect the entire landscape. These guys will be looking out for themselves and the biggest paycheck they can get, and they're likely to have outsized influence on things getting mercenary.

It will be interesting. The positive for ND is they can be different. I'd say a lot of these kids who are just chasing NIL money wouldn't consider ND anyway. Best case for ND is that this insanity is a major disruption for the football factories and a team like ND can find a niche with super talented kids who want to be challenged and be in a more stable culture. I truly believe there are enough "ND kids" out there who are also talented enough that we can remain at or near the top of college football. We'll see if Freeman and the staff are up for the challenge.

If NIL hangs around this kind of thought process could get us in a lot of trouble. You can be an ND kid who highly values education and what ND provides while still being influenced by $$$.

Notre dame isn't too good to cash the big checks that come from football. There should be no reason for them to be above writing them either.

ND will inevitably join the Ivy League,… it’s total chaos, cats and dogs living together,….

Agree. I guess I mean that ND doesn’t have yo go all Texas A&M to compete. Obviously they have to change with the times. I just don’t think the sky is falling for ND because of the transfer rule and the NIL deal.
