How long before people get offended by the word South?

I live less than 20 miles from Stone Mountain, where there's a huge confederate memorial carved into the side of the mountain. They have a huge 4th of July laser and fireworks show every year. They've now cancelled the fireworks show due to Covid spikes, but are still doing a big protest tomorrow night against the memorial. I personally don't care what they do to the monument, but I am a little surprised someone hasn't tried to blow it up or damage it already. I guess it's hard to blow up a mountain lol. It has an interesting history, and is also tied to the guy that did Rushmore.

The system is designed to do that. Keeps you voting regardless of outcome, which: (1) legitimates the status quo; (2) makes you morally complicit in all sorts of garbage you surely don't support; and (3) neutralizes you as a threat.

If the Harlem Globetrotters are evil, and the only team offered for opposing them are the Washington Generals, then the smart play isn't to keep showing up because "there's no other choice," but to simply stop buying tickets. The GOP as it currently exists is worse than useless, and it will never improve until people start making their support conditional on results.

We should move to a parliamentary system.

I disagree with this statement. My mom’s family is from the Chicago area and she is the whitest person ever. She goes from white to straight up red when exposed to the sun. She came from a military family and has an advanced degree. My dad is from rural Mexico, mestizo, never finished elementary school and came to the US during the early days of the Bracero program. I am literally the melt you say is missing. I think what has been lost is the understating that various ethnicities, classes and cultures all are representative of the “American” experience. To me Los Tigres Del Norte are as “American” as Merle Hagard or the Dropkick Murphys.

I agree. In fact, what other country has a wider variety of ethnicities, religions, lifestyles; etc? Not equal...wider. It’s far from perfect but when I look at other countries, I see a lot more homogeneity.

I was a bit disappointed to see it moved off the stairs and into a park. I wonder if they had problems with too many folks jacking around and running up the stairs.

I understand what Mike means, but also agree in part with what you are saying. Both can be true. On one hand, you still have a lot of tribalism within ethnic groups that prevents or prolongs melt. On the other hand, you have things like increasing rates of interracial marriage which increase melt. I think it was a 2010 study that said a little more than 15% of all new marriages were interracial, which is double the the number/% of all existing/current marriages.

We have political gridlock now, and have for a while. Nothing get's accomplished because of constant Christmas tree ornament adds, and red lines from each side.
