SOUTH BEND ? Maybe someday Jimmy Clausen will make headlines for something he actually does on the football field ? not for ornate announcements with stretch Hummers, not for clandestine elbow conditions, and, most recently, not for a minor scrape with the law.

I lived in Indiana for a total of 6 years. (College and Grad School)

I had no idea this was a law. I cannot tell you the amount of times I drove OLDER students around who just bought booze. It was my car, so it's not like I am going to let them drive it.

This one is LAME. I am all for punishing Hand for trying to get a hooker, but this is bullshit. Clausen can't drive his own car? WTF? He goes shopping with ANYONE but his parents (who live in Cali) and he can't drive a car with booze in it.

LAME LAME LAME.

The fucking SB cops are jackasses for pulling kids over for this shit.

Its a stupid law, but it was the excise cops, not even the SBPD. Excise cops are basically state funded ATF, minus the T and F. They usually wait in the store and parking lot, and bust kids with fake ID inside and try to bust the kids waiting in the parking lot. I worked at a store in SB for awhile (near campus) and it was very rare to see the excise cops. Maybe 1-2 times a year. It was pretty bad luck to run into them during the summer when most of the students arent even there.

Dumb law! The athletic staff should use this as a wake up call...if they didn't inform their athletes of this ludicrus law then they should start now. How many times before 21 did I illegally transport alcohol? Sorry Mom but I cannot drive the van to the picnic, there's beer in the car!

GO IRISH!

Wow, what an incredibly stupid law.

Well, he's not been suspended from the team since it happened 2 months ago & he's still practicing.

Hope Student Affairs doesn't take any action against him.

Ahh, he'll have to sit through a few hours of alcohol counseling and either pay a fine or work it off through community service. Trust me ... I remember having, err, friends who had violations of this sort.

Having lived in this retarded state all my life, I never knew that was a law. I, like a poster earlier stated, drove my car with older people in it, or better yet, had someone drive me since I was entirely too intoxicated to be behind the wheel, while they were under age. I don't understand the logic of it all. They don't want somebody to be driving under the influence, so you get a buddy to drive you, and he gets a f***ing citation for it. Indiana is probably the most ass backward state in the union. The bible thumpers don't want liqour stores open on Sunday, but you can still go to a bar, or restraunt and get soused. You're certainly not wanted out driving under the influence, but if your friend isn't of age, watch out, he or she could be ticketed for transporting alcohol without your parents in the car. Rediculous!!!

It shouldn't be anything to write home about, IMO. It happened 2 months ago, so, if Res Life has an issue over a citation, I don't know, I just don't seeing it happening.

Looks like Charlie's got his back:

Coach: Clausen being cited case of ignorance of law

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis said Monday that quarterback Jimmy Clausen's citation for transporting alcohol as a minor is a simple case of ignorance of the law.

"I think it's out of ignorance -- and by ignorance I mean lack of knowledge," Weis said. "I don't think he was defiantly trying to get himself into trouble with the law."

Weis said he himself didn't know it was illegal for someone who's underage -- Clausen is 19 -- to drive someone who is of legal drinking age to a liquor store to buy alcohol. He used the analogy of a friend of his son's driving the coach to a supermarket to buy a six pack of beer.

Still, Weis said it was a mistake.

"Did he have bad judgment, being in the wrong place at the wrong time? Absolutely. You can't sit there and say when something happens that nothing happened," Weis said.

Clausen, who is competing for Notre Dame's starting quarterback job, was not available for comment. Weis has not allowed freshmen to talk with the media yet this season. Clausen and other freshmen are scheduled to be available to the media for the first time on Friday.

Clausen, one of the top recruits in the country, was cited by Indiana State Excise Police on June 23 outside a liquor store about 10 p.m. on a Saturday night near campus along with a 23-year-old who bought two bottles of vodka, a bottle of whiskey and a case of beer.

Clausen remained outside the store in a vehicle along with another Notre Dame freshman, who was not cited.

Excise police were in an unmarked car looking for minors attempting to get alcohol, Excise Police Lt. Tim Cleveland said Monday. The arrest first became public Friday when it was reported by the South Bend Tribune.

Clausen entered into a memorandum of understanding last month with the St. Joseph County Prosecutor's Office in which the citation against him will be dismissed if he isn't charged with a criminal act in the next year and he pays a $170 fee. If he had been convicted of the misdemeanor charge he could have faced up to 60 days in jail and a $500 fine.

Weis said Clausen, who has been practicing with the team, faces no other action.

Clausen is the second Irish quarterback to have a brush with the law this offseason. LaPorte County prosecutors dismissed a misdemeanor marijuana possession charge against quarterback Demetrius Jones in May after the owner of the car he borrowed told police he let Jones drive the car and was sure Jones didn't know the marijuana was in the ashtray.

Weis said Monday that quarterbacks at Notre Dame are always going to be under scrutiny.

"It comes with the territory. Fair or not, that's the way it goes," he said.

Weis also said the case of defensive lineman Derrell Hand, who was arrested last month on a misdemeanor charge of propositioning a prostitute, is nearing a resolution. Hand was suspended indefinitely from the team.

Weis had said Hand would have to let his case go through the judicial and university systems before Weis could take any action. Hand entered into a pretrial diversion program last Thursday and is scheduled to learn his fate from the school in the next couple of days, Weis said.

"Once that happens, I'll have a better idea of where we're going," Weis said.

This is good, from eTruth:

In my opinion, this whole matter has been much ado. Not much ado about nothing, exactly — as arcane and silly a law as it is, Clausen broke it and his status as a high-profile member of the Notre Dame football team warranted its reporting, even if you don’t agree with the manner in which it was reported — but close to it.

This is not going to have any effect, I don’t think, on the team or the way Jimmy Clausen plays football, and that’s really all that matters, isn’t it? If Notre Dame gets beat by Georgia Tech on Sept. 1, the “distractions” surrounding Clausen’s citation won’t be the reason. And I haven’t heard anything but good things about Clausen as a teammate from the players and coaches I’ve spoken to, and certainly haven’t seen anything at practice that would indicate he’s not a respected member of the team.

So what’s the big deal?

The big deal is the fact that a big deal was made of it — the fact that we’re hanging on every move this kid makes. And by “we,” I mean those of us in the media as well as those who follow Notre Dame and college football. I think just about everybody would do well to take a step back and simply let Clausen attend school and play football.

(Clausen’s not totally blameless for all the attention he gets either, having instigated — or at least participated in — the infamous verbal commitment press conference at the College Football Hall of Fame. All the media did, on that day anyway, was show up.)

Now, is the press a little too willing to take a story like Clausen’s citation or his much-hyped arm “procedure” and run with it, thus adding to the drama? Probably, especially when there’s a chance to scoop the competition. Are we quick to assume the worst, both about him personally and his value to the team, when something like this happens? Some of us. Are people in the media out to get Jimmy Clausen? No one that I know is, and I honestly believe that.

The people that came to hoot and holler and take pictures of Clausen’s championship rings at that press conference also helped to build Clausen into what he’s become. Yes, I know that cheering their team’s players is what fans do. Still, those who say Clausen gets too much attention didn’t help the situation on that day or by obsessing over him in the interval since.

That’s why I say that maybe there are more important things to discuss right now when it comes to the Notre Dame football program. (And maybe Weis knows what he’s doing when he shields the freshmen who haven’t played from the media.) But, unfortunately, I don’t see Jimmymania dying down soon. Because I’ll be there on Friday when Clausen talks to the press, you’ll watch the video of it online and read the stories about him in the papers and we’ll be right back where we started.
