I've been trying to find this everywhere I go. On Rivals, it states that we had 7 commits this time of year who eventually signed. If I'm not mistaken the number of commits at the time was 9 including two defectees, am I correct?

I think Trattou was the only one commited at this time who changed his mind. I didn't think Greg Little had commited until later, during the season, I could be mistaken though, it happens about twice a year.

I think you're right actually. Thanks.

Benn was a silent correct??

Who wasn't one of those? Benn, Barksdale, Martin, Edwards, C.Little and Donald all were at some point, and then Trattou, G.Little, and C.Little, again, were all public decommitments.

Yeah, it's been a banner year for recruiting. Weis and Co did an amazing job.

That being said, every recruit from here on out will take the place of an eligible 5th year player next year. There are a total of 7 who are eligible...and maybe 2 or 3 worth keeping.

Just bear that in mind.

Here's a great breakdown of scholarships.

Oh, I didnt realize that about the 5th year seniors.

yup...we have maxed out to a degree.

That being said, remember that NO ONE is guaranteed a 5th year at ND. You must graduate in 4 years or you are off the team.

Each 5th year MUST be in a graduate program. They must also be invited back to the football team.

This year we have Travis Thomas, Tommy Zbikowski, John Carlson, John Sullivan, Dwight Stephenson, Trevor Laws, Joe Brockington, Ambrose Wooden, and Geoff Price at the 5th year.

And I definitely agree with LMI's assessment of taking only 2 or 3 next year.

From the SB Trib:

Recruiting strategy

With Notre Dame having already received 19 verbal commitments for its 2008 recruiting class, the Irish coaching staff may not have a lot of work to do to finish out the class, but certainly needs to apply some strategy in order to secure the best six players still on the board.

"Philosophically, coach Weis is not offering (scholarships) to anybody unless we want them to come to school here," said Ianello, also ND's recruiting coordinator. "We're not one of those schools with blanket offers to a bunch of kids in hopes some do and some don't (accept).

"We'll circle the wagons of the guys that we want to have come here that haven't made their decisions and see how we come out."

Ianello says the Internet has as much to do as anything with the barrage of early commitments, not only at ND but nationally.

"There's so much information flowing there, young guys are thinking they have to decide earlier," he said. "Johnny knows Jimmy has a scholarship offer from State U., so 'I might want to take it before he does.' All that kind of information has kind of accelerated the process.

"Somebody in the media asked me, 'Is it hard to keep up with the Joneses?' Well at some point we're going to be the Joneses."
