Probably not, most feel like he is leaning pretty decently towards OSU. But it's good news to see him coming to our spring game over OSU's. It's still going to be tough to get him from OSU. Heard he doesn't want to fall in the same boat as his brother.

He's still here i just don't see him cracking into any significant playing time anytime soon.

There are recent quotes from Dayne Crist since his verbal to ND that would indicate that Dan is very close to committing to ND and it might even happen as soon as this weekend.

Yes, getting Crist this week, and then possibly landing Fleming, Newman, and McCarthy this weekend/Mon. would be quite BRILLIANT.

Yeah, because Nate Oliver, Eugene Clifford, & Devon Torrence are all going to step aside and not compete for a spot at Ohio St. The worse of those kids was rated the 12th best S by Scout. IF McCarthy goes to Ohio St, it is not going to be because of depth chart. Maybe he likes it better at Ohio St...maybe he don't want to compete with his brother...maybe all his buddies go there and he wants to hang with them...maybe he thinks sweater vests are cool...but it won't be because of the ND depth chart.

They're not done evaluating all of the Div.1 quality recruits yet, but he'll get a little move love when they do. One of the ways to tell how good a recruit might be is to look at his offer list. When it includes schools such as ND, Ohio State, Oklahoma, and LSU, that means he's pretty good.

Also, I wouldn't get to amped up about early PT for any DB that ND brings in. That is already becomming one of the deepest areas of the team along with TE, QB, and RB. Not that Dan isn't a great athlete, it's just that there are many great athletes already ahead of him with more years ofexperience and hard work in a college weight lifting program.

Agreed--and that is a good thing!

we are not all that deep in the CB spot, or the Safety spot, so getting this kid out of osu's backyard is or will be a huge pick up for ND

as of right now, we have 16 DBs on the roster, 6 of which are seniors, 4 juniors, 5 sophomores and 1 freshman, if I counted correctly. McNeil may be gone for one of his years because he will be in Rome.

I'm not gonna get in a pissing match about our depth chart, but if we get McCarthy, its a great get, whether its for S or CB, we will be taking 1 safety in this class and maybe 2 CBs, in my opinion. If Florida, osu and lsu are chasing this guy as a safety, that tells me the kid can ball, and is probably a better athlete than his brother who is currently on our roster.

We may be halfass deep, but we are lacking in talent and playmakers and if we get a pretty deep class this recruiting year, say 22 or 23, at the rate we are going we may do it. Don't look for all that many 5th years to be granted next year, or maybe even the year after that.

Agree with Marv about the depth issue. Believe that after this season there are 10 scholarship guys on the roster or with signed LOI. That isn't deep enough for 4 spots.

That being said, recruits need to be somewhat realistic about 'early PT' at top-25 schools. If you are a very elite prospect you have a fair shot of starting as a frosh, or a much better chance as a soph. But how many guys are at that level, and even when they are, how often can they get significant time their 1st 2 seasons?

TE with the Irish is a good example. Reuland was very highly rated in 2006 (#1 TE until he started leaning to ND). Ragone was an early #1 TE for the latest class until he lost his season due to injury (then was dropped a few notches; funny how that doesn't seem to have affected guys like Shoemate and Tyler - oops straying off topic). Both these guys are behind Carlson for 2007, and while 'Connie' may see some PT this season as a soph, barring injury it won't be significant; 'Rags' likely won't even step on the field until his soph season, at which time there will be Reuland/Yeatman/Ragone/Rudolph/and likely Fauria in the mix. Same issue for QB/RB with the Irish. USC is there in about 4-5 spots now.

If someone is really focussed on early PT, then they should realistically be looking at lower-tier schools. Nothing wrong with a recruit expecting a FAIR SHOT at a 1 or 2 deep, but to actually expect to see the field is in most cases unrealistic.

Damn. I saw this headline and thought we'd pick up another one while I was sleeping:

McCarthy looking to start for Notre Dame

Oh, well. I suppose he'll be on board soon. Nice piece about his brother, though.

Just looked at that article again -- man, if you're going to make spelling and grammatical errors, try not to have them come in your opening sentence:

For many local high school football standouts, the ultimate objective is to sport the scarlet and gray of The Ohio State University or, the maze and blue the University of Michigan.

Uhh, Jamie? It's 'maize' (you know, the COLOR), not 'maze'. And that second comma is entirely unnecessary.

Okay, I'm done. Sorry about that, folks. But with Tommy around so rarely, somebody else has to be the grammar nazi.

So what's the deal here? I thought McCarthy was ours as soon as the offer came in -- any news?

If there's one thing that we learned last year, don't count on recruiting service gossip. McCarthy may very well end up Irish, there's no telling when or how he'll make his decision.

He's got alot of good offers, I'm guessing that he doesn't want to rush his decision. Good luck to him.

It might be just an Irish Eyes smokescreen, but a headline blurb over there on McCarthy would seem to indicate that he is not close to making a final decision, something which seems to fly in the face of the conventional message board wisdom of the present time. Can't tell for sure though without access to the complete story.

McCarthy just picked up offers from BC & WVU and now plans on making a summertime visit to BC. That would seem to put a nail in the coffin of any further rumors of McCarthy's imminent commit to ND. In fact, if this one continues to drag on, I would not be surprised to see Brandon Leslie re-emerge as a potential ND offer.

No offense to Kyle, but I don't think he is even in Dan's league when it comes to being a safety prospect. I've seen both in person and on film, and Dan is a much better football player on all accounts. He's faster, stronger, more elusive. He's the definition of a playmaker. This says a lot though because Kyle wasn't too shabby himself.

The offers and rankings are pretty different. Dan has offers from OU, LSU, OSU and Um amongst other schools. Kyles big two offers were from ND and OSU. Dan is a 4* and Kyle was a 2*. So based on HS credentials Dan is better, but in college nobody knows yet because Kyle is only a (RS) soph. and Dan has yet to start his Sr. year in HS.

DAMN, I didn't realize that not only do we have Kyle on board, but Kyle's older brother goes(or went) to ND and his grandfather played baseball there too. Come on how do you not come he must've grown up a big ND fan.

There are only two things that would hold this up:

1. He legitimately is afraid of competition with his brother.

2. He's the kind of guy that wants to "blaze his own trail." Some kids feel burdened by the precedents set by those who came before him. Not saying he is at all here, but it is the case with other instances.

Other than that, I'm pretty much of Knight's mindset. There are always little things, but we don't really have to do much of a sales pitch on the pros of ND for this guy.

I've seen posts here several times now that suggest he doesn't want to, or even go as far as saying he is afraid to, compete with his brother. Most brothers in sports are fiercely competetive with one another. why would he be any different? has he been quoted as saying something like this or is this just speculation? there could be a hundred reasons why he doesn't want to come to ND, but this one seems silly to me.
