CONTEST

Football Season is a long ways off but Baseball season is upon us... for a slight change Irish Envy will be holding the old standard trivia contest but will be doing so for America's Past time in celebration of the beginning of Spring Training. This contest is available for all members who wish to enter and entering is simple. Simply send a PM my way with the answers to the trivia questions and the member who gets the most correct answers wins. Got it? Remember DO NOT post the answers in this thread. PM me the answers and I will update who is entered every day or so to confirm your entry. If two or more members have the same amount of winning answers the winner will be chosen just as good old Svoboda used to do it… I’ll draw one of those members names from a hat.

PRIZE

So what’s the prize? As you can see below we are putting up for bid four HBO DVD’s on baseball. “When it was a Game” I, II & III which is a very well made series of documentaries on the history of baseball caught on film. The winner will also receive the very moving documentary “Nine Innings from Ground Zero” chronicling the post season run of the New York Yankees in 2001 and how much it helped New York start the healing process shortly after 911. That postseason you may remember was one of the few times in history that the majority of the country became fans of “The Evil Empire.” Even some die hard Bo Sox fans were seen at games cheering on the Yanks.

For those Irish fans who love baseball these DVD’s are a must have. For those who are more into Football “When it was a Game” is a great work of film making on a rich part of American history. “Nine Innings from Ground Zero” is a DVD that should simply be owned by all American’s it is a fine piece of film making that is sure to move most viewer’s to tears, baseball fan or not. Both DVD’s sets are new and unopened.

The Fine Print and RULES

All information is collected in the United States, and the use of any personally identifiable information is simply for use of shipping the above mentioned prize. By entering this Contest, you are agreeing to abide by the official rules written below. If you do not agree to abide by these rules, please do not enter this contest.

Each boardie may submit one entry. If you submit multiple entries, the first entry received will be considered official, and the subsequent entries disqualified.

The contest will be settled on baseball's opening day, any member has until the day before to enter, so you have some time if some of the answers don't come to you...

EVERY member of Irish Envy including mods and admins can enter, I am the lone member excluded

Okay kids... if one want to give it a crack here are the questions... A little help...I'll say from the start that the questions FOR THE MOST PART go in historical order and span the entire history of Baseball. I also tried to have as many questions as possible involving as many teams as possible. Anyway here you go...

1.) What was the name of the first professional baseball team and who was their manager?
2.) Name the hall of fame pitcher who after being disabled in World War I helped break the black sox scandal of 1919 to the public.
3.) From 1903 to 1912 the New York franchise that would become the Yankees was known but what name?
4.) While many major leaguers attended Notre Dame, two members of the Hall of Fame spent time as students at Notre Dame though neither graduated. Both are considered widely to be two of the games all time greats. Name either of the two.
5.) Who was the first player in history to have his number retired?
6.) EXCLUDING the Yankees, what franchise has won the most World Series titles?
7.) What team holds the record for longest time spent without winning a World Series in all of Major League Baseball history, current or otherwise?
8.) The 1908 Chicago Cubs won the teams last World Series Title thanks in part to a famous play during a critical late season match up with the New York Giants. This play would help give the Cubs the pennant and a trip to the Series while devastating the Giants and their New York fans. What has that lone play become to be known in baseball history?
9.) Which one of these all time greats never won a World Series: Walter Johnson, Ty Cobb, Jimmie Foxx, Stan Musial or Hank Aaron?
10.) Bobby Thompson’s “Shot Heard ‘Round the World” happened in what year?
11.) What franchise was the last to add a black man to their roster?
12.) What Baseball great was known as, “The Commerce Comet?”
13.) What year did the Boston Red Sox “Impossible Dream” season occur, and who won MVP of the World Series that year?
14.) Some teams throughout the years have used a song and or gimmick to help moral during a title winning season. History has shown when this happens that song and or gimmick is remembered as much as the team itself for that specific year. In 2005 the World Champion Chicago White Sox used the song “Don’t Stop Believing,” by Journey as the team anthem. In 2002, the Anaheim Angels rode the emotional wave of the “Rally Monkey” to bring home the title.... What team used the popular disco song “We are Family,” as the team’s anthem during their great run to the title? What year did this occur?
15.) Who is Don Denkinger and what was his role in deciding the 1985 World Series? No books needed, just a sentence or two.
16.) The 1991 World Series between the Atlanta Braves and Minnesota Twins was one of the greatest ever. Whose walk off hit in bottom on the 10th inning of game 7 won the game and the series for the Twins?
17.) The 1994 season, shaping up to be one of the greatest in MLB history sadly, was ended on August 12th 1994 by a labor strike. Only two teams publicly opposed the strike itself in any outward regard, one of the two even sent out a public “S.O.S” the day before the strike went into effect. Name either one of the two teams that openly opposed the strike. (Hint: both teams shared the same reason: unexpected success in the standings)
18.) The opening game of 1996 World Series saw the youngest player in history to hit a home run in a World Series, name the player. (Hint: he hit TWO that game)
19.) The 1998 Yankees saw a very game San Diego Padres squad in the World Series. With the score tied in the 7th inning of game 1 the Yankees appeared to have been given a “fourth strike” as an obvious third strike was called a ball. On the next pitch the batter in question hit a grand slam to seal the game and VASTLY change the complex of the entire series. Who hit that famous shot in game one?
20.) We all know Reggie Jackson is “Mr. October.” There have been two other Yankee players to earn spin offs of this famous nickname. Who are “Mr. May” and “Mr. November” respectfully?

Simply PM me the answers and you'll be entered in the contest...
