“After I called him, he was telling me how much of a priority I am for them and that although he already has some commits, he really wants me and that he hopes I’ll consider them heavily,” said Phillips of his conversation with Elston.
“That was a lot of fun,” said Phillips of his Notre Dame visit. “You really get to experience how different Notre Dame is and you get to see all of the different historical things about Notre Dame. It was very enlightening. I talked to defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder, head coach Brian Kelly, and Coach Elston. I got to watch them during practice and see how pumped up they are about the season. It was really fun.”
“When I went for the Junior Day, they kind of told me I’m too critical not to get inside the box, but said I’m long and lengthy, so I can play outside the box,” said Phillips. “They said the player they can relate that to is Jaylon Smith. They said they will kind of use me in different ways like how they used him. They said they would set me up as my own position. I wouldn’t be playing Mike, but I would play Will or Sam.”
“To be honest, I didn’t really watch Notre Dame too much during the season because that was before they were really on my radar,” said Phillips. “I’ve heard that [Jaylon Smith] was the Butkus Award winner, so obviously he’s a great linebacker. One of my coaches, he’s a Notre Dame fan, and when I told him that, he was very happy about that. It’s definitely a blessing to be compared to him.”
“It’s an educational school,” said Phillips. “They don’t have all the pretty and flashy stuff that other schools have. They have a nice weight room and a nice indoor [facility], but campus-wise, you don’t stay in really nice apartments. You stay with the regular students there. There are pros, because you build a lot of connections with people who are very smart and the people who will be running the world. It’s about building connections there and life after Notre Dame.”
“It was a lot different than Notre Dame,” said Phillips. “With Notre Dame, you get the whole thing about education and connections and football and history and stuff like that. With Oklahoma, you get the history of all the championships there. The head coach [Bob Stoops] has been there so long that you don’t see a shift in anything success-wise there. There are things to like about both of them, but they’re different.”
“Probably the people recruiting me the hardest are Oregon, Oklahoma, Ole Mis, Notre Dame, Kentucky, Vanderbilt, Mississippi State,” said Phillips. “Those are probably the people who, maybe not my favorites, but the ones recruiting me the hardest.”
“They were my first offer,” said Phillips. “There’s a lot of things to like about Ole Miss. Mainly, it’s the coaching staff. You win there. They went to the Sugar Bowl. They have draft picks in the first round. The coaching staff is top of the line. The things they tell the kids. When you go there, you feel comfortable because they share the same faith as me and they’re not afraid to express that.”
