Well when our only requirement of a MLB is that you make sure the 4 DL in front of you don't line up on top of one another in a pyramid, I suppose elite is easy to achieve.

Whoa now. The MLB ALSO has to make sure that the secondary doesn't start doing interpretive dance before the play. Can't get caught on their heels.

On blitzes, you also have to be able to get within arm's length of the QB while he is passing or beginning to scramble.

looking like oklahoma is the team to beat

If you're an LB and you're not from Texas, Oklahoma or Fresno and pick OU over ND right now, you were never, ever ND material. I'd understand if a big RB chose Bama over ND, I'd understand if a DB chose LSU over ND, I'd understand if a pro-style QB chose to play for Miami and Mark Richt but ND checks every box for an LB... an elite education and it's the school that produced 2 Butkus award winning NFL millionaires in the last 4 drafts.

Probably don't need another one anyways. There's a handful of guys who can move there from safety or WR in case Werner becomes ND's version of John Lynch.

May visit this weekend per Scout. The staff is working on getting him on campus for a quieter more personal visit. Was offered by Bama too

We sent out our fist pots of gold for this class. It went out to all prospects that we have offered and visited campus, as well as, current commits. Thus Jacob received one. Pretty cool deal this year. It was a bunch of baseball cards with the authentic baseball card material, so it looked good, that had the picture of the player when they visited campus.

Maybe I missed it. But I thought we were done at linebacker. Is he coming in as an athlete?

Per Anna, not visiting ND this weekend. Going to the Opening regional in Chicago. ND in his top group

This sounds like he is more interested in getting his rating up than he is in ND in particular. That isn't a good sign.

If this were some random 7 on 7 event I would tend to agree with you. But I won't begrudge a kid for wanting to compete for a spot at the most exclusive recruiting event of the year. There'll be plenty more opportunities to visit ND.

Yea, I'd say this is a bit of an overreaction. He's already visited ND once on his own dime and by all accounts will over the summer again, then come back for an OV in the fall. If I was a football prospect his age, I'd love to compete for a free ride to the Opening, which is the biggest camp setting these kids can go to. Free trip, free swag, great competition against peers etc.

“After I called him, he was telling me how much of a priority I am for them and that although he already has some commits, he really wants me and that he hopes I’ll consider them heavily,” said Phillips of his conversation with Elston.

“That was a lot of fun,” said Phillips of his Notre Dame visit. “You really get to experience how different Notre Dame is and you get to see all of the different historical things about Notre Dame. It was very enlightening. I talked to defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder, head coach Brian Kelly, and Coach Elston. I got to watch them during practice and see how pumped up they are about the season. It was really fun.”

“When I went for the Junior Day, they kind of told me I’m too critical not to get inside the box, but said I’m long and lengthy, so I can play outside the box,” said Phillips. “They said the player they can relate that to is Jaylon Smith. They said they will kind of use me in different ways like how they used him. They said they would set me up as my own position. I wouldn’t be playing Mike, but I would play Will or Sam.”

“To be honest, I didn’t really watch Notre Dame too much during the season because that was before they were really on my radar,” said Phillips. “I’ve heard that [Jaylon Smith] was the Butkus Award winner, so obviously he’s a great linebacker. One of my coaches, he’s a Notre Dame fan, and when I told him that, he was very happy about that. It’s definitely a blessing to be compared to him.”

“It’s an educational school,” said Phillips. “They don’t have all the pretty and flashy stuff that other schools have. They have a nice weight room and a nice indoor [facility], but campus-wise, you don’t stay in really nice apartments. You stay with the regular students there. There are pros, because you build a lot of connections with people who are very smart and the people who will be running the world. It’s about building connections there and life after Notre Dame.”

“It was a lot different than Notre Dame,” said Phillips. “With Notre Dame, you get the whole thing about education and connections and football and history and stuff like that. With Oklahoma, you get the history of all the championships there. The head coach [Bob Stoops] has been there so long that you don’t see a shift in anything success-wise there. There are things to like about both of them, but they’re different.”

“Probably the people recruiting me the hardest are Oregon, Oklahoma, Ole Mis, Notre Dame, Kentucky, Vanderbilt, Mississippi State,” said Phillips. “Those are probably the people who, maybe not my favorites, but the ones recruiting me the hardest.”

“They were my first offer,” said Phillips. “There’s a lot of things to like about Ole Miss. Mainly, it’s the coaching staff. You win there. They went to the Sugar Bowl. They have draft picks in the first round. The coaching staff is top of the line. The things they tell the kids. When you go there, you feel comfortable because they share the same faith as me and they’re not afraid to express that.”

Told Rivals he might be back at ND for II. 2019 teammate, Jashon Watkins, is camping and Jacob could catch a ride. Not finalized but would be huge if he visited again.

He's also the #2 ILB at rivals now. 109 overall.

Me too. He's a big kid that you can see is still growing into his body. Once everything is lined up correctly he's going to be a monster. He'll be a 6'3 250 beast. Ratings have definitely caught up now.
