"I liked the campus a lot," said Calcaterra. "South Bend and Notre Dame was awesome. "The meetings with coach Denbrock, Sanford and especially coach Kelly were great. They were very complimentary of me and provided a ton of information about where they see me."

"They have four or five players on the team in my position right now, so if they were to offer it would come later," said Calcaterra. "Coach Denbrock said it was likely to happen, but there is no way to tell now.

"I think the chances of an offer definitely improved. I think they were able to see my family and what kind of person I am and were able to see that I would be a good fit at Notre Dame. I think that I was also able to get a better understanding of where they are with me in this process."

"I really liked his coaching style,"(BK) said Calcaterra. "And the meeting was great. He basically told us that Notre Dame is the best of both worlds in that it's a great academic school, as well as a football school."

Said IF NEEDED he would come back for Irish Invasion and if offered would def take an official

This kid does seem like a perfect fit, and is setup to succeed, and by in large, invisible, much like the Shark, and the Eifert!

Only other thing I will say is that as a senior in high school, his build looks much better than either Jeff Samardzija, Tyler Eifert, or Kyle Rudolph, for that matter, at least until they had a few years in the program. (If even that.)

This guy feels like the type of kid that we pass on because we don't have room, he signs with one of our rivals, and then makes us regret not taking him for the next four years. That being said between Alize, Boykin, Claypool, Kmet and Wright we already have a fleet of jumbo WRs and TEs.

This is probably over. One thing we can't do is complain about a lack of jumbo WR's. But with CRob the only WR that is guaranteed to come off the books in '16 and the Irish sitting pretty with a few high value '17 WR's, space is limited. Can't win 'em all, can't offer 'em all either.

Scout: Grant Calcaterra knows where he stands with Irish

Three-star receiver Grant Calcaterra spent his spring break on the road, which included a Wednesday stop at Notre Dame. Now he knows where he stands with the Irish.

Three-star receiver Grant Calcaterra and his family haven’t had much down time during his spring break.

The 6-foot-4, 200-pounder from Margarita, Calif., has traveled more than 3,000 miles since Monday with stops at Oklahoma, Vanderbilt, Michigan, Northwestern, Notre Dame and Indiana. On Friday he’ll be at Kentucky.

“It’s been pretty busy,” he said. “We’re all tired but it’s been good.”

Calcaterra was at Notre Dame on Wednesday.

“We started out watching practice so that was good then we got a chance to tour the facilities, which was nice,” he said. “We had a meeting with academic advisors and all that and near the end of the day we got to meet with coach (Mike) Sanford, coach (Mike) Denbrock and then coach (Brian) Kelly at the very end. It was all good.”

During his discussions with the Irish coaching staff he learned where he stands with the program.

“They see me at the W position, which is more of a bigger receiver,” he said. “The situation with them is that they have four or five right now and they don't really want to offer me right now, is what they told me. They said if it comes down to it, if they just want to get the best athlete or if some of their smaller, shiftier guys aren't working out then that's when they would offer me. It's not off the table. It's still positive but they just have a lot of players at my position right now is what I got out of it.”

Calcaterra appreciated the coaching staff’s honesty.

“It was nice,” he said.

The other schools he visited also made a positive impression.

“I like all of them a lot,” he said. “There's a lot to remember though. Indiana was nice. Northwestern was good. They're looking at me at the super back position there. Every school is a little different. It's all good though.”

Calcaterra plans to complete the long road trip then discuss all of his options with his family before identifying a handful of favorites and setting a commitment date.

“I'm going to talk to my family and probably set a date to commit and then I'll already have it narrowed down and probably come out with a top five and all that before I make a decision,” he said. “It's still pretty open. There might be a couple schools I want to look at before I narrow it all down but it's open right now.”

Don't be surprised if Corey is off the books already.

I has a sad.

The Irish are stacked so deep at this position... just not enough cleats for the available meat.

I think this kid is a TE. We have two stud TEs already this class. I'm not surprised he committed elsewhere really. Writing was on the wall methinks.

I thought we were basically an offer away from an instant commit?

I don't know if he would have "instantly" committed on his unofficial but with the way it played out, I think he'd have been Irish had they offered. He did a multi school tour in the Midwest and I think he went there with ND, OSU and Michigan on his mind but the other two didn't step up with interest. He's from Cincinnati. ND knows how to use his skill set but has too many players that fit the big slot / W rec right now.

He's probably never going to be a real TE. I think it was Sherm who hit it on the head with his Devon Cajuste comparison. He's a 6-3, 205-210lb WR now. He's going to OU because they showed him he could play Mark Andrews spot, which is a hybrid, mostly W with occasionally lining up attached. They have such different physical skill sets though. Andrews is 6-6 and a skinny 245 now. On the other hand, Calcaterra's the same build as Lance Kendricks was when he went to Wisconsin... but Kendricks was an exceptional track athlete too. I'll stick with Sherm and the Cajuste call. If he really overachieves maybe a poor man's Funchess.

Think he would have been Irish if we pushed

Agreed. I sat next to a couple of guys associated with his high school's program on the first day of the basketball tourney. They said the same thing and that if OSU got into the mix it would get interesting. Per written reports, he didn't want to get it over with this early but he didn't like the feedback he got from ND... OSU and Michigan didn't jump in (his teammate Dylan Crawford is going to Ann Arbor this fall). He must not have liked the Tennessee or Florida offers because he didn't visit when he was in Nashville to see Vandy. OU may have told him there was only one spot and it was first come, first serve so he jumped on it. His original time frame was the summer - before school started.

What's sad is he had the right kind of schools looking at him. Northwestern, Vandy, BC, even Illinois and Purdue all offered. Shame that he chose OU being that the odds of a football degree paying off in Norman are slim at his position.

Hopefully he keeps his ears open between now and NSD. He's surrounded by a lot of smart people at Santa Margarita Catholic.

The Mark Andrews mold isn't a bad one to be in at all, though. Guy had an outstanding freshman year.

Yeah i agree and no doubt that's how they sold it to him but it's like comparing a 207lb Miles Boykin to Greg Eifert the year before Boykins senior year.. They are just different human beings.

Sounds like a really bright kid, good for him. Not everyone wants to have their quality of life threatened for the instant gratification of the NFL. God bless, and good luck.

Why are ND fans talking about Calcaterra?

To be continued?
