Interesting tactic by the team but I think its taking advantage of a rule meant for talent that is truly on the fence.

With those facts in mind, it should have surprised no one Wednesday when Calipari took to Twitter to announce that every eligible member of his team — even the walk-ons — would be submitting their names for draft eligibility this year thanks to new rules that allow players to test the waters up to three times and make informed decisions about their future.

Yeah they changed the rules. Gives the kids the ability to go to the pre-draft camp, get a draft eval and back out a little later.

I agree with the concept of the rule but like the article states I feel it could take away from other potential candidates to be invited to the combine. Let's say 8 of these players get invited to the combine just because of the team they play for. Five end up coming back to school. That's five spots that could potentially have gone to a kid from a smaller school.

These are all if statements on my part and the whole thing may be smooth. But for some kids the combine may be the only way to catch the eye of a scout.

Like our own Mike Brey said... Calipari needed to do something to keep making noise. His team is out, so now he has to spout about how "once the season is over, it's all about the individuals and their futures!"

He plays it off like he's throwing a wrench into the yearly "Which UK players are coming out?" by sending everyone. Really, he's just marketing UK. And it's brilliant. But annoying.

That's kind of what I was thinking.

This is exactly right. We were talking about UK on the day of the sweet 16 games, even though they had already been eliminated.

I don't see the harm. Obviously the walkons and such have no shot. College is all about opportunity, and it's cool to say they had a NBA draft workout 40 years from now, and for the ones that are on the fence, it gives them an idea of how close they are/how many more years they should put into college/what to improve on.

I guess the timing could be different? But other than that I think it's a smart move for any school with legitimate talent.

I agree. I think this is a brilliant idea. And it's really cool for the walk ons to experience something hey never would have before.

I see no harm and no foul in this. It's a good experience for all kids involved IMO.

This is great. Some unheralded kid is gonna have a Mike Mamula-esque workout and get drafted because of it.

This is awful. It is a supreme waste of time, money, and resources to let every swinging dick workout.

Two sides.....
