Been meaning to post this for a while and when he hit Loy's radar today it reminded me.

Goes to same HS that produced the following QB's over the past 5 years.:

Chase Rettig - BC
Travis Wilson - Utah
Sam Darnold - SC

He's an excellent athlete, especially for a plus armed, QB-DT. Ran a 4.66 at Opening Regional

Probably the best fit for ND of any QB I've seen in the past 2 seasons. Better than Sam Darnold who I really liked for ND.

Had the highest Spaq score for any '17 QB, 9th highest score in the class overall.

Does he have interest in nd or is it too early to know?

I know ND is in contact with him. I haven't heard his level or what his "dream school" is.

Utah was first to offer. Travis Wilson went to Utah and two of his current teammates, OL Tucker Scott and TE Cole Fotheringham are committed to Utah for '16.

We'll see.

So ND is in contact but we have no idea if he's remotely interested in ND?

Wow... I think this guy is gonna shoot up the recruiting services rankings. He has incredible touch on his deep-mid range ball, and incredible athleticism and vision as a runner.

Haven't seen the film but read what's posted here. Sounds like the start of 2015 QB recruiting all over again. Too early for ND man?

Unlike a lot of QBs whose highlights usually show deep TDs thrown to uncovered Wide Receivers with plenty of room and ability to adjust to the ball, Sears' shows plenty of pretty well covered receivers catching dimes that drop right in over the defender

Plays a lot like Barnett - prefers to stay in pocket but can definitely see the seam and rip off huge gains when he wants/has to. He's shorter than Barnett but looks a lot sturdier

Idk, he doesn't look much sturdier to me. Arm doesn't look as strong either. Looks much more like Ian Book to me, which is fine if you can't land a surefire stud.

Maybe a more mobile Ian book? But I can see that comparisson, it looks like he's a lot more polished footwork and mechanically than Avery Davis, albeit with a lower ceiling. I don't really know where we go QB wise this cycle though, since we missed on HJ I don't see any homeruns for us to hit in this class

Well I see a more mobile Book with a little less Polish in the pocket. I don't think he's the best fit for ND's offense I've seen in two years. It's a long way to go until signing day 2017...I'm sure they will identify a group of kids they really like. This kid may be one or he may not.

ND has not been in contact with Sears to this point. Definitely someone they need to keep an eye on, but they have yet to reach out to him. Avery Davis is their guy for the time being.

I think you're right. Same general build as Barnett. 1 - 1.5 - 2 inches shorter or so. Before you infer someone isn't a sure fire stud remember that Sear's Jr. numbers are better than Jr. Barnett's numbers playing comparable schedules. And remember Barnett's meteoric rise between Jr. and Sr. year. He wasn't an anointed one like Rosen or Town were at a younger age.

He's a tier up on Davis as a passer only. Davis is an elite athlete for sure but a 107 Sparq proves that Sears is no slouch. Guess how many QB's had a better Sparq score in '15? one, Brandon Wimbush.

Sorry, Wimbush is the best overall. I meant in LA/OC/IE. Yes, that includes Barnett. He looked meh to bad in each game I saw, albeit against very good comp. He's obviously a great talent, that's why ND offered, that's why he's at Bama.

I think we need to define contact then because it's in print that ND has reached out to him (mail, email, coach, phone... I don't know which) and the local SoCal guys who know everybody's business say the same. I believe there is an Irish Illustrated paid article from the US Army Combine that has some info linking them too, obviously I'm not a member.

I think that Wimbush is definitely the best to fit our system the way it is now but back during the recruiting cycle, I would argue that Barnett was better, since it was less run focused and less reliant on the deep ball. I think that Barnett is a better passer on the short-mid routes than Wimbush, but Wimbush has a significantly better deep ball and is a better runner in the power running scheme that Kelly ran with our Qbs this past year.

The kid himself denied any claims to ND being in contact. So Notre Dame may be aware of him, but they have yet to make contact.

Just curious, where/when did he say that? Was that part of the VIP/$ stories from the combine?

Here is one of the local interviews I based my post on.

Inside The Helmet: San Clemente's Jack Sears - Orange County's High School Sports Blog - Orange County's High School Sports Blog

How is recruiting going? Which colleges have made offers or shown interest in you?

Sears: “Recruiting is going well, I guess. I have an offer from University of Utah and have had interest expressed from a number of schools. The schools that I have received the most attention from are Washington, Washington State, UCLA, Boston College and Notre Dame. I have also heard from Nebraska, Arizona, Duke, Pitt, Missouri, Minnesota, Michigan State, Auburn, Northwestern, Harvard, Yale and Dartmouth.”

The other was this Scout article:

Three-Star '17 QB Jack Sears Could Blow Up This Spring - Football Recruiting - Scout

Utah has already offered Sears, which isn't surprising with the success former Triton Travis Wilson has had in the program. San Clemente also has two current players in the '16 class committed to the Utes in tight end Cole Fotheringham and offensive lineman Tucker Scott. UCLA, Washington State, Washington, Boise State, Notre Dame, Boston College and most of the Ivy League (4.2 GPA) have also reached out to Sears and we expect his offer list to rise quickly over the spring, much like it did with Darnold.

Lastly, Rivals also added ND as an interest since I gathered the info last month.

I would assume they have him ranked lower on their board and with avery sounding like its only a matter of time to commit it doesn't hurt to just waiting it out a bit...especially when he makes it known that it would be tough to turn down

I can't believe there are people that look at his film and don't get it. I'm shocked ND hasn't offered. He's perfect for ND and for those of you who like throwing to the TE... (All of us), he's been trained to do it in their program. Speaking of program, they just keep pumping them out at San Clemente. Sam Darnold, Travis Wilson, Chase Rettig, all in a row. All killer, no filler.

Knowing that ND values the QB run so much, this is important to remember... while he was waiting his turn behind Sam Darnold to become the next QB, he was an All Conference - All County WR as a soph. That's Big School, Orange Co. All Conf / All County. That being said, WR running instincts, 4.65 40 as a 15/16 year old... I'd take Jack Sears over Hunter Johnson for ND's system. Go ahead, flame away.

Hendon Hooker is the only guy I see with his physical skill set but Hooker isn't coming out of a QB factory. Sears is going to be miles ahead mentally in regards to the position.

He's in the Opening Regional LA this weekend. Dudes gonna continue to blow up and will be at or near the top of the pile when it's all done.

Going to be an early enrollee and is going to wrap it up before school starts with his commitment. That's huge. I'm guessing if he's from San Clemente, his family can afford to visit any school on his list, doesn't have to wait around for OV's. The other good news is he doesn't care where the school is (so he says now...I know)

Anyways, I just got a message from a local OC guy who read the 247 stuff this morning. He said if ND offers, he visits immediately and commits. The rumor has been he's an Irish fan, I just never saw it in print. He sent me this following quote from an interview. It doesn't say where it came from but it mentions SEC so I'm guessing it's Tennessee related.

“Distance isn't a big deal to me at all. If it's the right school for me then distance doesn't matter,” Sears said. “I'm a big time college football fan. I love watching any big time football game. I think the SEC is more televised and you get to see them more. I enjoy watching any game that's on.

“I'm scheduled to graduate in December and be an early enrollee. I am planning on making a decision before the season starts.”

Early enrollee's get moved to the front of my line. I don't know Davis' plans but Hooker enjoys his hoops so I doubt he'd leave at the semester.

Had the 7th highest overall score at the LA Regional. He's now had the 2 highest QB scores since Brandon Wimbush. Didn't get the Elite 11 invite today but will probably get one later. Chase Garbers and Tate Martel got the only two invites today.
