Just curious if anyone is currently taking or has taken any marital arts?

What type?

Any cool forms or techniques?

I am currently taking Shaolin Karate with some Okinawan self defense techniques.

Wife and I both have done a bit of Krav Maga with my father in law ( he's a black belt in numerous martial arts, or was at certain times in his life) but I can't say I'm overly proficient in it or anything...

Black Belt in Kempo Karate with some Gracie Jujitsu for the ground game. Can't say I'm a very good grappler, though. Kempo is all about closing the distance and staying in the box.

As sensei used to say, "hit hard, hit fast, hit first."

I took Kung Foo years ago in college. I still practice on my own but it's been awhile since I have been in a class. I need to find time to go back.

I studied Kung Fu for a few years. The instructors gave us a good mix: both Northern & Southern styles, grappling, even some traditional boxing (one of the teachers started out as a boxer). It was a good experience, I wish I would have started earlier. It would have helped my athletic development in school.

I am about to get my blue belt. I have a couple pinyan forms and am polishing up Heinan Nidan right now. Just starting out in Kung fu as well. I like it though it kind of gets confusing doing the different styles. It really is interesting the differences between Japanese and the various Chinese schools.

They teach us some wrist locks and various ways to control an opponents arms but mostly it is self defense and quick finishing strikes.

Joint manipulation is my faaaaavorite. I know a couple in particular that are just nasty.

Did you do any of the animal styles specifically? I have been shown a leopard form which is pretty awesome though I am far from being able to do it completely.

I've been studying the footage from Bloodsport. In particular, the combination monkey style/capoeira technique in the film.

Capoeira is soooo interesting though I dont have the acrobatic chops to be doing that style.

I started training Muaythai in 98. Then stated BJJ a few years later. However I would prefer to strike then grapple.

I took up boxing my senior year of high school once football was over. Got through about 6 months, and started prepping for my first event... only to suffer a boxer's fracture.

The kicker? Didn't do it at boxing. Broke it on a friend playing the punching game at a graduation party. Dumbest sh*t ever. (I later cut the cast off on senior trip at Myrtle Beach. Good life choices happening around then.)

Never got back into it after that, and I still wish I would have gone back once my hand was healed up. I started playing a yearly rotation of intramurals through college, and now do the same at a local park.

I've been looking around for good classes to take lately to get back into boxing, though. No desire to actually compete or anything. It's just a good, unique workout (though not as "unique" as other martial arts). I know some guys that run a gym, but their only strictly-boxing class right now is all high schoolers. Waiting on more interest in an adult class before I make a fool of myself in front of younger kids with my out-of-shapeness.

I spent 33% of the time locked in the hotel room with my then-girlfriend (now wife). 33% was spent playing drinking games in other rooms. 33% was spent actually on the beach/in the ocean.

The remaining 1% was spent at Hot Diggity Dog for every. single. meal.

What a week that was.

So it seems we have a pretty diverse body of knowledge and different styles. Awesome.

Personally it is a great mental escape for me. I love the physical activity and training but also the ability to pull me out of all the BS life throws at you.

Also I love my sensei. Dude learned from master Yao Li and has studied at the Shaolin Temple. He is from Boston and when you screw up is all " C'Mon Guy... you gotta learn the rules before you break'em."

"You serious ovah there Guy?"

"My sistah has a hella stout Ram's Head sweep"

Beer Bongs with Hootie, Slaying foreign girls, fights at the Bowery, multiple trips to the drunk tank and bail postings.... LOL wow... Good times.

Before my last trip my senior year, my parents had a bondsman in MB ready to go before we left.

We touched on some different animal styles: Crane, Tiger, Snake, Eagle are what I still remember. The instructors did a good job of showing us a lot of different stuff and demonstrating how it can be incorporated into a sensible whole. The smorgasbord approach offends purists, but I enjoyed the variety.

Have taken Muay Thai for a few years-off and on. Love the simplistic form and brutality of it. Would be better if I could actually do it well. Ha. It would help if I had solid shoulders but at my age, just being able to get out there and make it happen is good enough.

Started in Singapore where there were some Thai Kru's that started me out (always yelled at me for stiff hips) and have picked up an instructor in the states that have taught a more Western style. I still suck.
