I'd be thrilled if Notre Dame can get the opportunity to play the University of North Dakota in the tourney.

I live in Grand Forks. I'm not a hockey guy but when you get free tickets a few times a month to a 100+ million dollar arena with 11,000 people filling it up, it's alright. They've won like 7 titles, none in the 15 years since they moved into the arena.

What is not alright is these people think they are God's gift to college athletics. Really strange group of people with their obsession with puck. I'd love nothing more than to see Notre Dame beat them.

Great to see Notre Dame doing well this year. Saw them live at Minnesota's building last year and it was ugly.

Hockey in Minnesota is a glorious thing. It's crazy like SEC football but without the teabagging and corruption. I'm including UND as an honorary Minnesota team (yeah I said it. Fite me irl faget). There's just something to be said for people throwing dead animals on the ice that I don't think really exists in any other sport.

Oh and I'm going to borrow a quote from a great movie: "If I grew up in rural Massachusetts, and was retarded, Hockey East might impress me. But I didn't. So it doesn't."

I'd rather do the popular thing and not. Come on, UND doesn't even have a real mascot anymore, do they? They could have gone with Roughriders which would have been awesome, but instead they went with something I can't even remember right now.

Technically they are the Fighting Hawks but they don't announce them as that because everyone starts booing. They even put it in the paper they were not going to say the name on the PA at games anymore for the time being.

C'mon now...it's been several years since a team west of NY won the natty, and its been nearly a decade since two such teams won in a row. HE teams have pretty solid records against the other conferences (although not the Big 10 strangely).

2011 wasn't that long ago. Besides, it's not just talent, it's culture and familiarity. Most of us in the Midwest have never heard of 2/3 of the schools out east. My fandom is based on CCHA rivalries and the fact that most of the games aren't televised means that I can't engage with the new schools at all. Besides, UND, UMD, and UMN are iconic hockey schools. Quinnipiac is not.

Certainly, nobody is going to out-hockey the state of Minnesota, but you're underselling the eastern schools a bit. 2011 wasn't that long ago, but we are talking about 7 of the last 8. That's considerable.

Most people in the east haven't heard of SCSU (of course, ND hockey fans have! alas), MN State, LSSU, Ferris State, Michigan Tech, etc., either. But Midwestern fans' lack of familiarity with eastern schools is more of an ECAC problem, anyway (although I assume that, say, Gopher fans are by now familiar with how good the best ECAC team can be). Many of the other ECAC schools are relatively unknown outside of the Northeast, but the Hockey East schools, with the exceptions of Merrimack and NU, are all either flagship state universities or have been to the Frozen Four the last five years. I don't think most of them are that obscure.

As for iconic hockey schools, I would say that BC, BU, and Maine count. I admit to eastern bias for sure, though, which is probably the reason I think HE is the best post-CCHA landing spot for the program.

Certainly I was not thrilled that the CCHA fell apart, but ND has scheduled many traditional hockey schools (like Minnesota and UMD) and other former CCHA teams (Michigan Tech, LSSU, WMU, Miami) even in the new league, and hopefully will schedule North Dakota, Michigan, etc., again soon.

Yes. Get North Dakota on the schedule.

A lot of the North Dakota fans here aren't too big on Notre Dame. Sounds like they wanted the Irish to be apart of their conference which they claim is the best thing since sliced bread but Notre Dame wanted to do its own thing for television rights or something? The funny thing is, they hate on ND for that, and then bitch about the new television set up they have now.

Anyway, would be fun. Notre Dame is relatively popular out here. For any of you who really like hockey, as I stated earlier, the arena is outrageously nice.

UND is pretty uppety for a school that just had to give up its mascot and is UMN's bottom bitch.

Wait, we had a chance to join the NCHC but didn't? We would actually make sense in that conference, unlike HE where we're the only team west of Massachussets. Ugh, I wish CCHA had stayed together, it's no fun to cheer against Vermont and Merrimack :(

I mean, fair. Unfamiliarity doesn't breed contempt, but I guess maybe in a few years these will seem like intense rivalries. Just seems a lot more normal to play midwest teams, but I digress.

The Irish Icers had a bumpy end to the regular season, but end it with a thrilling 1-0 win over BU. Cal Petersen recorded his first shutout of the year and made some extraordinary saves to do it. The Irish finish with an overall record of 19-8-7 and 3rd in Hockey East with a conference record of 15-5-2. They have a bye in the first round of the HE tourney and then will play either Vermont or UConn in a best-of-three in South Bend. They look to be safely in the NCAA tournament field as a 3 seed (currently tied with BU for #9 in the PairWise) but of course much will depend on how the HE tournament goes.

Here are the highlights. Try to ignore the jerseys.

Ended up going to two games this year and loved them both!

Looking forward to see how they do in the Hockey East tourney.

In case anybody hasn't gotten enough ND-Michigan lately...5:30pm on Friday. Game should be on ESPN-something (probably ESPNU).

I will go to the game depending on when the Men's Basketball team plays.

I hate the B1Gots, but this is a great change for me since I'd actually like to see a game against a school that I've been to.

I guess regionally it makes more sense for a smaller budget sport. But man I hate to be associated with the Big10 in anything. Guess there's slim options since most of the ACC hockey teams are in Div 2 Club level.

You can see, hockey east is really a new eangland based conference.

Boooooooooooooooooo

Only problem I can see with this is...well, it's the B1G, and they suck. BUT, the schools of the Hockey East are so painfully low profile. It's like playing in the SEC but with the media coverage of the Sun Belt. It'll be great to actually get to see a game from time to time, and let our Hockey rivalries echo some of our football rivalries. It isn't enough to just play against a team. I like having a good reason to hate that team, too.

Huh, what about that NCHC thing or WCHA? Those seems like decent conferences...
