To me, a Notre Dame man is a guy whose mug you can stick on the wall and call them a symbol of the program or the university..

I like this point and voted no, but for other reasons.

To me, I got a little annoyed with the idea T'eo was this "golden calf" type figure, impervious to criticism. Anytime a poster would say something that wasn't absolutely glowing about him, people would lash out with the fire of a thousand suns.

Te'o the football player was phenomenal, and he earned every accolade associated with his name. Along the way though, without going into too many details out of respect, he rubbed me the wrong way. Just my thoughts, nothing more. Vote any way you like, it's your right.

Well, looks like he'll have no problem getting 75%.

Congrats Manti, I'm sure this is your greatest accomplishment as an athlete!

Voted no, don't really care if it's the unpopular opinion.

The fake girlfriend thing was an embarrassment on the university and I find it very hard to believe that someone smart enough to get into Notre Dame would be dumb enough to get catfished as badly as he did. He was either incredibly naive or knew he had been hoaxed but played up the "tragic hero" angle in an attempt to boost his image/Heisman profile. Ask a bunch of unbiased, non-ND fans for their views on Te'o and they will be similar to what I'm saying.

All of that said, he was an oustanding football player.

There are no unbiased fans, only people who love ND and people who hate ND.

I honestly have no idea how anyone can vote no. But to each his own.

I mean there really is only one reason why. I chose to vote no based on my opinion that at a certain level he knew or embellished the catfish story for his own benefit. Manti Teo is arguably the best ND football player of my lifetime. I am 31. He was incredible on the field in 2012. Unfortunately, the first thing that comes to mind isn't the most decorated player in college football history.

Again, this is probably why the polls should be anonymous. If these guys want to explain their vote, let them choose to identify themselves rather than be labeled and raked over coals (Not what you did, phork, just making a point).

We voted on this. The board has spoken.

Not even by a 2/3 majority though, that shit wouldn't fly in Congress! I'm just lookin' out for the minorities here. The ones that voted for transparent voting are the same ones calling out the minority for their voting choices. This is no democracy, good sir, if we tar and feather the misguided fools that wouldn't let Manti into this club. I'm asking for executive power (Or mods in this case) to veto the public voting bill...err...option.

To be fair, there's a solid chance many people did not know what a public vote meant at the time of the vote. I believe it wasn't clarified for some posters until we already had 50 or more votes casted.

I think the only people complaining aren't even people who voted no.

Why does that necessarily matter?

While I did vote Yes for Manti, we're already seeing people getting called out for their voting practices. I could see this getting ugly down the line with some of the more controversial players. This should work like any other democratic vote, a voter's choice should be secret unless he chooses to share it with the public. There's something not right about a process that allows the voters to choose transparent voting (With a less than 2/3 majority winning) and then said voters rake the minority over the coals.

I didn't take it that way at all. I took it to mean that they had to have made a contribution on the field, not that they had to be the best at their position, or even great at their position. Someone like Asaph Schwapp is a good example: His stats are atrocious, for a guy who played in 39 games in his career. He finished his ND career with 98 yards rushing, and 62 yards receiving. I wouldn't vote for him, even though I loved watching him play. On the other hand, Marc Edwards was nowhere near the greatest, or even one of the greatest, fullbacks at ND. His career numbers are: 1591 yards rushing, and 598 yards receiving. But I would vote for Edwards, because he epitomized a selfless player who was all about team. And, by all accounts, he was and is a solid person.

See, while I would vote Edwards in, I would have voted Ace in too under the old system (And would still vote for him regardless). By all accounts Schwapp was a great teammate, very giving person, and was taken at the young age of 26 after his battle with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. In a Weis offense a fullback was never going to get a bunch of carries, he was primarily a blocking back. He was good enough to catch on as an undrafted free agent, even if it was short lived.

There probably isn't a way to do it, but it would've been nice to restrict the voting to only those with a minimum post count or minimum time on this board.

I like seeing who has voted and how they voted.

You can track people and call out those who haven't voted yet to get their aces in gear and vote with clean fun.

I can see if this was private, those who vote no or against the grain will be silent. Then we will never know their reasoning. Their reasoning could enlighten us with knowledge that we may not have known about the person or make us take a deeper look at the candidate which could sway our own vote --- either way it gets the debate going.

We are all grown adults here. Simply act like it and have good discussion or MODS take this thread extremely seriously with bans if you feel it gets too out of hand.

Didn't get it done on the field...

If that doesn't matter, then I am going to nominate Ray Shanabruch as a Notre Dame man. The fact that he never played football there doesn't matter. He's an ND grad(Class of '50-something), one hell of a good guy, and also probably the smartest guy I have ever known.

I promise to keep a close eye on all the polls and if anything inappropriate happens it will be taken care of. People can be "called out" without things getting to an appropriate level.
