How I miss days like this.

CBS knows how to broadcast big games, and they always have.

Man, Michigan has always been such a cowardly football team. It's amazing their fans are so arrogant. I'd be embarrassed if I were a scUM fan. Afraid to play ND. Afraid of loud stadiums. Afraid of competing outside the Big Ten. Afraid of benching rapists. Afraid of allowing players to take real classes. Afraid of night games against MSU. Afraid of leaving their home stadium (prior to MSU joining the Big Ten, something like 42 out of 48 games were in the Big House). Afraid of competition (kept ND and MSU out of the Big Ten and outright tried to kill MSU in the cradle). There's nothing like Michigan if you want weakness.

I do enjoy watching the old broadcasts from the 80s. That crowd noise was some good stuff, and I'm glad that weak-willed pansy bastard couldn't get it into the end zone.

I have listened to the radio in the past for various reasons but it's usually off a step or three... but not always, I've had it pretty close before.

If I could have it my way, I would choose to bring Mayock back and pair him Brady Quinn. Then I would bring Flannigan back on the sideline. I like Ward and Vilma in the studio though, and I would leave that alone.

Neither of those guys are play by play guys... I would like to see Quinn get a nice deal to be our color guy though... He's solid on fox

He seems to be anyway. Fox has a pretty solid crew for all its broadcasting, except baseball, which seems to be much more up and down. But CFB, Soccer, NFL, are all pretty solid across the board, IMHO.

I just don't get how NBC really can do an A+ job with the Sunday night games and just totally seem to half-ass the presentation for ND. Even compared to the CBS SEC games or the ABC prime time games, NBC is just so JV. I'll watch other games and if there's a close fumble they'll instantly have a slow-mo great angle replay ready in a couple seconds. NBC feels like the opposite. It's like the other games have 5x the cameras there.

And obviously the announcing is crappy usually as well, but I'm more concerned with the sub-par presentation than I am with Flutie/Hicks.

I think it is interesting that the radio is behind. I always thought that there a slight delay on TV, whereas radio was much more immediate, since they were right there. Maybe the technology is better for TV than it is for radio.

What station? I do not know what Westwood One is anymore, of it is even available here. I would love to find a way to listen to it, though, if possible.

Oh geez we don't even get west wood in our area anymore sadly (no clue what happened but it just went dead in our area about three or so years ago)... now, in my area, ND games are on the same channel Angel games are on (AM 830) in my area (unless an Angels game is on at the same time then the Halos get top billing)... btw, you're a Tennessean? I always thought Westwood One was a SD/LA local station... I guess it's national then?

It was. Not sure I can do much better than WNSN – Sunny 101.5 FM South Bend: Audio Stream, though. I doubt I could get it at my dad's place, but I may try and sync it Halloween weekend. I may be at a party that night, but I kind of hope not.

But yeah, I remember listening to Westwood One on the radio. I think ND ended their relationship with them quite a LONG time ago, as I just found out.

Via what? I would love to hear other voices, if possible.

I listen via the tunein app on my iphone and hook it up to my stereo system. I just found a local station that had the broadcast on. WOWO 92.3 FM out of fort wayne. The tune in app has a bigger delay than what the tv broadcast has, which allows you to sync the two up. Kind of an inconvenience to have to do all of this, but seriously those guys are that bad.

I actually went to see the Navy game when it was in Ireland at an Irish pub, but not Silky O'Sullivan's. The ND Club in Memphis watches at a BBQ joint often, but my Dad is not up for crowds much, and noise even less, so I watch with him usually.

I think Silky died just this year, actually.

Those stations tend to not play ND games as often as they used to do, but I will check them again.

Thanks!

I spent 51 weeks going to avionics school in Millington, in 1989-90. Silky's was our regular weekend hangout. But that was the old Silky's, before they moved to Beale Street. I think it was on Madison, back then. It was a wild and raucous place on weekends, though. Everyone was trying to live up to the Top Gun image... I loved Memphis, and would like to go back sometime for a few years. Memphis in May was fantastic. Mud Island was great for concerts, and those Southern girls............

Here is a list of all the Notre Dame Football affiliates carried on the IMG Radio Network. I bet if you're watching Directv HD it's pretty close to the radio feed if you can pick up via direct broadcast instead of the internet.

UND.COM :: The Official Site of Notre Dame Athletics

I'll try it here in LA for the Temple game.

I'm kind of over the Flutie horribleness. Being a color commentator is really hit or miss and in every game I would say it is very rare for one or both teams' fans to be happy with their opinions.

My issue is with Hicks. For me, Hicks is the furthest thing from college football that you can get. This is a vacation for him. He gets to travel to the opponent's campus during the week, then call some golf, then show up and do an ND game.

From a personality standpoint, he doesn't have the familiar voice of Brent Musberger or Chris Fowler and he doesn't feel the need to prepare for his work like PBP voices on ESPN morning games. Dan Hicks is the ND fan that sits in the gold seats for September games only and pays extra for a 6PM Sunday check out at Morris Inn.

He rests on his ability to occasionally wax poetic about random things:

"As the sun sets over ND Stadium..."
"We got a chance to talk to Coach..."

I would much prefer a football person. Someone that describe the action as it happens or get outs of the way and just lets me watch. With Hicks, you just get a higher volume during a big play. The words aren't different, but his cadence slows and his voice gets louder.

Did anyone notice how he described the whole Sark drama during the telecast? He provided total cover, saying that there was a lot of speculation but that it was not clear what particular ailment Sark was being treated for. This from a guy, a journalist no less, that spent time on the USC campus the proceeding week. How many people get that kind of access and then have the balls to not tell the truth about what has been widely reported?

I liked that when USC was playing well, Flutie had plenty to say, and even seemed to be coaching from the press box on what they needed to do to play even better. But when ND plays well or makes a big play, there are 3 or 4 seconds of dead air where he is obviously collecting himself and trying to find it in himself to break down ND's success. Either that, or he immediately questions the result and/or talks about how ND was given a gift.

In Flutie's eyes, ND doesn't make things happen. The opposition just gifts them the results. It becomes more obvious every week. He's giddy when ND is struggling, and very quiet when they're not.

I wonder if anybody at NBC has noticed or even cares.

Obviously they are only looking at the ratings and cash generated. They are borderline negligent of his crap.

A good lead commentator can accommodate for a bad color analyst and vice versa. We have neither. Hicks is boring, doesn't have the voice for football and his football IQ is limited at best. Flutie has about 1/1000 of the football IQ Mayock had, he's a blatant anti-ND basher and is wildly inconsistent.

The only saving grace for Flutie is, as somebody stated, he shuts the f*ck up once we start beating the other team. Perhaps if our team realizes this, we'll never lose again...

Unless there is a push off. He always comments about the push offs. Pretty sure every catch we make is due to a push off in his eyes. At least all of Will Fuller's.

You mean this Dan Hicks, in a USC shirt? Not even Flutie went that far.

Why can't we get ND grads or personalities. There are plenty. It would be awesome if Lou would do color. There are so many out there who could be great.

Tom Thayer, they could actually get lots of guest in the booth every week.

Lou's pushing 80 (Born Jan. 6, 1937). I'm betting that the travelling is probably a bit too much for him, these days.

Everyone has their preferences, but give me Gus Johnson with Brady Quinn and have NBC pump in more crowd noise... I'd be a happy, dare I say it,... camper.

Quinn is fantastic as a color analyst. To this point, he strikes the right balance between expert knowledge and casual terminology.

I don't think NBC would go the full-homer route though. But one can dream.

Side note: I actually thought it was a breath of fresh air when Hammond came back to call the game a few weeks ago, and I used to despise that guy. He was great compared to Hicks. I've realized that I'd substitute his creepy looks and constant name errors for Hicks' boring commentary any time.

As much as I dislike Dan "He's got a 3 footer for birdie" Hicks. Johnson as I said before calls a 2 yard run up the middle from midfield like Bobby Thompson won the pennant. Just too over the top.

The fact that you used Doc and Gus in the same sentence is ban worthy! It goes Doc & Vin... then assorted mortals. Make no mistake though, Tommy Hammond is a future hall of famer. Next to Doc & Eddie O calling a Hawks Cup clincher, He does my favorite sports broadcast of the year like a boss. Nothing better than a few mint juleps, Tommy and the Derby to open summer with.
