and sorry, hip hop music does tend to be generic compared to other musical styles... in fact there isn't much 'music' to it... it's a great art form, more poetic than any modern form, and deserves discussion and attention, but imo, as a whole, it's clearly a few steps below other musical forms of expression that require many more layers of musical talent (Folk, Blues, Jazz, etc.) and once you've immersed yourself in those forms it's hard to fully go back to really any modern popular music, hip hop included... if you disagree that's fine, but calling racism is pure bullshit.

Generic, hardly. Perhaps you don't listen quite close enough.

Not a strict use of the word... 'generic' as in less organic, less instrumentation and more computers... it's a problem I have with much of pop music. I never 'heard' it until I stepped away and listened to blues and folk and the like for a while then came back... it stood out then and still does. but don't get me wrong I still listen to hip hop from my youth and enjoy it and my friends still listen to (almost) exclusively hip hop when we are together... I do not enjoy much of that... I wouldn't even have mentioned anything had my explanation (from months ago) as why my love of hip hop is related almost exclusively to the late 90s and earlier hadn't been tied to a charge of racism....

Yeah, for 2 reasons. 1) Their top hits are all time top hits. And Nas sucks.

Illmatic is easily hands down one of the top 3 hip hop albums of all time, and one of the most influential. That entire album is straight fire and lyrical genius, especially when put into perspective of where hip hop was the time and the complex rhyme schemes. Nas struggled with his identity at times, and his music suffered overall suffered as a result but there is no doubting he is one of the all time greats. Same with Big L and Lifestyles ov da poor & dangerous.

Few people have mentioned him, so I get that he's big time in many people's eyes. I've always been into the hard core (like Eminem stuff), or up beat-party stuff (Give me some DMX - Party Up), so Nas' mellow but real songs like 'One Mic' didn't interest me.

Nah, people who mention him as one of the all time greats likely aren't talking about One Mic..NY State of Mind, Halftime, Represent. The world is yours, memory lane, the message, nas is like, ether, Queens get the money (serious), if i ruled the world, life's a bitch, hate me now, 2nd childhood, it aint hard to tell, made you look, Nasty (crazy flow)....His technical skills are matched by few others.

Anyone else think Jay Z is incredibly overrated? he has a couple nice songs from the late 90s/ early 2000s and made some bangers with Kanye but overall I don't think he's that great.

I like Jay on his gritty tracks. His pop/club banger type stuff is just ok. "Where I'm from" is sick

Studying for midterms and listened to Kendrick's albums from Overly Dedicated to TPAB in order. Gotta say he really improved every single one. GKMC is probably my favorite but TPAB is the most impressive and best work.

I don't understand how Kanye can say Wiz got "trapped by a stripper" lol.

The guy married Kim Kardashian.

Any of you guys listen to the new Anderson .Paak? Probably more neo-soul than just straight up hip-hop but it's my favorite album of January so far and I'm much more of a garage/psychedelic rock guy than hip hop.

Would anyone argue that J cole and Kendrick lammar are not the best rappers right now?

J Cole !!... Too good!

Also, check out his Documentary on Showtime (or HBO). They show the full concert and interviews from when he went home to Fayettville. Very good!

(still not as good as Jay Z's "Fade To Black" documentary!)

why do you say that? IMO, no one paints a picture in your head like cole

I don't know, I've just never been personally been amazed by j cole and I know a lot of people who feel the same. I also know a lot of people who love him.
Personally, my top 5 in no real order are:
Kendrick
Isaiah Rashad
Earl Sweatshirt
Joey Bada$$
Chance

solid list
For me...
Cole
Logic
Gambino
Chance
Alex Wiley

I just have the upmost repsct for J. cole. He sends a message in his music. He stays on track and can flow with any vibe. He lives a very humble life compared to most people in similar shoes. I'll admit, most of his beats are mellow, but the lyrical content is unmatched. His schemes are not as complex as kendrick's, but unique none the less.
