Ronnie Stanley not a Captain because of parking tickets

Would this be a bad time to say I was on the way to the bookstore Friday before the Spring Game this year and Stanley was in a parking lot getting his car towed? True story.

I do believe he talked his way out of that one, but I would have to imagine you don't get your car towed for a first offense.

Depends. Was he in Coach Kelly's spot?

Why in the heck would parking ticket even be a factor when it comes to the coaches choosing a captain??? That's a private matter and has absolutely nothin to do with having the moral fiber to be a Team Captain. I mean, did the AR clerk in the Bursar Office call up Kelly to let him know Stanely has an outstanding balance of parking tickets?? Utterly ridiculous...

Even if the university blocked Ronnie from being a captain, you'd think BK would have the balls to overrule them. Like what are they gonna do/say to him?

It's a personal responsibility/attention to detail thing. Why does the military insist you make your bed a certain way? Why do we care what politicians do in their free time? Why did Bobby Petrino get fired for having an affair despite being a very effective coach? Because we hold our leaders in society to a higher standard, even when we know that making your bed probably means dick to your ability as an officer to get your men home alive. A captain sets an example and having many unpaid parking violations indicates either laziness or entitlement, because in most cases it's hard to screw it up that badly on accident. ND is so much nicer with regard to parking enforcement than literally any other university I know (I've had to commute regularly to five major schools beyond ND).

This is going to raise some huge red flags in background checks for the NFL. He's not committing anywhere near serious enough or violent crime to warrant a top 10 pick.

It can be really fucking hard. I got 10+ tickets because I parked my car where I thought there was a spot (there was snow on the ground, impossible to see lines and I parked in line with other cars) and I was off by one. Woups. Left my car in the lot for about 2 weeks before I needed to use it again, came back to find oodles and oodles of tickets. I ended up paying a reduced fine when all was said and done because I argued that it was their responsibility to make parking markings visible/accurate and threatened to get a lawyer... we settled on me paying the equivalent of two tickets if I remember correctly.

My senior year I had the opposite problem. I got 3 or 4 tickets for parking in different "visitor" lots where I wasn't allowed to park at XYZ time because I had a pass for a different lot. In short, you can only park in the "open" lot if you have no pass at all, something that was not made clear to me. I got 2 tickets in a 24 hour period, and then later my friend got one making the same mistake borrowing my car to move stuff... and I think I got one or two more.

Now that the FBI has Whitey Bulger under arrest they can set their sights on LAX.

Multiple tickets and almost getting his car towed, I'm pretty sure he just doesn't give a poop.

I don't disagree with the sentiment but 1) what is the purpose of the captaincy requirement and 2) how is it furthered by excluding Ronnie Stanley for this reason*?

*acknowledging we don't truly have the facts here.

This is the truth!

The worst thing a college campus can do is make a student have to think about where he or she parks. Seriously. Student parking should be designated, distinguished, and consistent. Even if it is relegated to all of the crummy spaces. It should be consistent.

That is just a factor in providing academic support. Period. Who is the school's customer? Why is the school there to do? That goes back to your philosophy, are you there to fail as many students as possible, or teach them to succeed?

I would guess that if the tickets were received from ND police, that they would be paid, as I would speculate that the school might hold something like that over a students head before allowing a diploma to be released. It may seem a little petty, but as we all know, ND is different from a lot of other schools.

To your example of your buddy's girlfriend, that example is to me the very definition of entitlement - "I was entitled to park here and not pay the tickets because I have done something in return for the school, so it shouldn't matter what I did". That may very well be what ends up being the outcome from her situation, but it also could've affected other people in some way that she was unaware of. Maybe a person was injured and would've been better served to have that spot but couldn't, who knows. Ultimately, if simply doing the right thing is not a priority for oneself, then you're right.

Didn't Brian Kelly when taking about Cost of attendance, explain that Irish players got something less than 2K, and that when library fines and parking tickets were taken care of it left some with very little extra?

And as far as that goes, I can't believe some of your stories! I have never been to a school where you didn't have to pay all fees and fines before you got that sheepskin! You guys must lead privileged lives!

Am I the only one who's pretty sure the parking thing was a joke and there's probably another reason?

Probably.

TP, you know everything happening at ND! Tell me : how in the hell wouldn't Ronnie, his representative, or his parents not negotiated his way out of this before agreeing to return for the '15 season?

And, players leaving before their eligibility was exhausted? No disrespect, but it seems to me that we had one working pretty hard to return and compete, even when the odds were against him! So I think if anyone leaves early to avoid traffic tickets, or lists any other minor issue, we can assume it is something more significant, and includes a character issue or two.

I am truly sorry this happened to Ronnie.

Agree. I lived off campus for two years with two other guys. We had stuff to do on campus every day and pretty frequently in the evening, but with different schedules so we usually drove separately. We each got a ticket (dismissed because it's the first one) and that was it. I'm not sure how much you have to goof it to get enough. But it's not reasonable for athletes to play by different rules.

Really?

Yeah but... this isn't the military.... and he isnt a politician.... Like I said before... Fuking Utterly Ridiculous if this is the real reason he wasnt made a Captain.

I put parking tickets in the same category as getting a neighborhood citation such as:

You didn't mow your lawn for an enitre month and its too long. or your grass isnt green enough, or you used up too much water to keep your grass green, or you didnt shovel the snow on the sidewalk in front of your house.

These are utter bullshit municipal citations that are there, NOT to keep the order of society. They are there simply to generate additional revenue for that municipality to then waste it on throwing a happy hour for Clerk Susan's Employee of the month award.

I too enjoy leaders who think the rules don't apply to them.

Parking restrictions on campuses aren't just stupid rules to make money. They're there because it's the only way to handle thousands of people coming and going to a small area every day. It's not some stupid aesthetic thing. They friggin suck to deal with, but that's society.

If he was suspended because of parking tickets I would understand people being upset. All that happened was not being named captain. In my eyes a captain is a leader by example on and off the field. He failed to handle his off the field tickets. That sets a bad example. I don't know the reason behind not paying them on time but none the less it is something that should have been handle. Which he did not. This team is full of leaders and the captains named all earned the right to wear the "C" on their chest.
He is an amazing player and from most accounts a decent person. He unfortunately lost his chance at being named a captain due to his own actions.
I don't think it's that big of a deal, personally.

Yup. It's highly contextual. You can't just say "parking" and pretend that tells the whole story.

I don't recall writing that rules don't apply to leaders but, ok. Nice of you to put words in my mouth. I'm not going to argue with you about something as insignificant and pathetic as parking tickets. I really don't care how you try to justify this because this entire scenario is still ridiculous.

1) Player breaks rules.
2) Player determined not fit to be leader/captain as a result of rule breakage
3) You say the rule breakage is irrelevant to the player's leadership.
4) I say rules are relevant to a player's leadership.

Goddammit this isn't Nam. There are rules!

This is a weird story to me. If it was because of outstanding parking tickets was he offered the chance to pay them off first? What were the parking tickets for? What if it was for parking in a handicap spot, do you view something like that different?

With the level of detail that we know, I find it hard to have an opinion one way or another other then it is one weird story.

This is why Kelly says no coach can last at ND for 15 years...can't wait for the kids at Gorman to hear about this nonsense.

I just don't see this as a big deal one way or another. I don't think it's big enough to look bad. Who knows, maybe he has like 15 tickets and refuses to pay. If that's the case, I don't mind the decision. If it's one ticket, then ND needs to settle. But either way, who cares, GO IRISH.
