Thought I'd start this to follow along especially any non specific info that doesn't fit into our targets bio threads.

First thought... Costello drafting in the #2 spot right now will win this competition. My man-crush for him is eclipsed only by Aliz'e Jones and the incomparable, Javon Mckinley.

My second thought is.... Where is Malik Henry???? lol

I'm on record calling him the 9th best QB in LA/IE/OC last year and I now admit... I was wrong. He was 10th as Patrick O'Brien is ahead of him now in Eugene.

You know you aren't living up to your hype when you go to an event named the Elite 11 as the #3 QB in the country and you aren't in the top 11. Ouch. It's been a long strange fall but he's got a... puncher's chance to climb the depth chart now at FSU.

Sorry, I'll see myself out.

Question, since a lot of these dudes are tweeting out their eval scores from The Opening ...

Are the scores comparable between positions? That is, is the difference between a 110 and 100 for OL similar to the difference between a 110 and 100 for WR, etc?

Just wondering, if anyone knows.

I think the rating is standardized for all positions.

Here's a Lineman and a big RB / LB's grades for comparison. It says you can go onto Nike's website and compare the #'s against other recruits by position and class.

Scout: Top Performers: Day One

OLUWOLE BETIKU
To put Betiku in Notre Dame context, the defensive end has a similar build to Jaylon Smith and Greg Bryant. That might not make sense on the surface, but the defensive end is put together like Smith and Bryant with muscles on top of muscles. Betiku was eager for coaching, listening when Ndamukong Suh offered advice on hand placement. And despite being a defensive end at the next level, he willingly lined up at defensive tackle when asked. Betiku is so physically mature that one of his high school teammates joked that when they first met he thought Betiku was a donor returning to Serra High School.

TYLER VAUGHNS
The SoCal receiver was the best at his position on Wednesday, maybe by a wide margin. The five-star had all the looks of a No. 1 wide out on the college level and beat nearly every defensive back he went against. Athletically, Vaughns showed off against Demetris Robertson when he made a circus catch after the ball was tipped. Notre Dame is barely hanging on here. Vaughns might be worth watching only because USC could land him. Look for a decision just before the start of the season.

DAELIN HAYES
Notre Dame is probably hanging around with Hayes in name only, but based on the USC commitment’s performance Wednesday it’s a lottery worth entering. The linebacker has put on ample strength since he starred at the Irish Invasion last year, yet he still moves like an outside linebacker in space. However, he got the No. 55 jersey here in part because it’s a traditional linebacker number at USC. Just getting Hayes back to campus for another look would be a victory for Notre Dame.

JEFF MCCULLOCH
The Houston, Texas linebacker ranked among the best of the best athletically during the testing portion on Wednesday and advanced to the Nike Football Testing Championship. McCulloch also played well during the actual competition. He’s clearly a fast-rising prospect, even at No. 60 overall entering The Opening. He said he’ll visit Notre Dame twice, both later this month and on an official later. McCulloch said communication with the Irish staff, including Brian Kelly, has been strong in the past month.

TOMMY KRAEMER
Notre Dame has its next Steve Elmer in Kraemer, whose game and personality mirror the junior guard. While Kraemer projects at tackle for now, his foot speed at 6-foot-5, 300 pounds is strikingly similar to Elmer. His personality isn’t that far off either. On Wednesday, Kraemer was the best of Notre Dame’s commitments. He split reps with Penn State commitment Shane Simmons, a fair matchup of two jumbo athletes. LSU commit Erick Fowler got Kraemer twice with speed moves, but Fowler (6-1, 235) is more an outside linebacker than a defensive end. Overall, solid opening day for Notre Dame’s top-rated commit.

CALEB KELLY
The Irish are pitching Kelly on the chance to be the next Jaylon Smith. Kelly doesn’t have that level of athleticism, but he showed off some quality coverage skills during match-ups with running backs. The Fresno product shut down four-star running back D’Andre Swift on a red zone rep. Kelly wasn’t the best linebacker on Wednesday, but he has the long, lean build that every college covets. The Irish will get him to campus later this month if all goes according to plan.

TONY JONES
Jones’ game was as advertised on Wednesday, solid straight ahead speed, quality hands and not much east-west shake. Jones beat Irish linebacker target Jonathan Jones in the passing game and struggled to get open against linebacker Devin Bush. On wheel routes and working in the flat, Jones had no problem getting where he needed to go. He didn’t fight the football on deeper routes. There’s no question he’s a pure running back for Notre Dame’s offense and not a potential slot receiver. Jones had a comparable day to Elijah Holyfield and has a similar skill set to the Georgia prospect.

PARKER BOUDREAUX
Boudreaux got a five-star taste of competition Wednesday, going against Oluwole Betiku and Rashard Lawrence in the afternoon. He held up against Betiku on his first rep. Then the five-star then got some hand placement advice from Ndamukong Suh. Betiku won the next rep handily. Boudreuax split with Lawrence, although the second rep was a bad beat. Boudreaux should get to show off his strength more when the pads come on. He held up against power moves but didn’t have the foot speed to always deal with counters. He worked exclusively at guard.

OFD: The Opening Day One Observations

There wasn't much for Notre Dame fans to care about during the Elite 11 other than Malik Zaire slinging the ball around the yard like he was still competing to win the competition. But finally, the fun actually started yesterday with day one of The Opening.

I'm in Beaverton at the event and I'm watching Tommy Kraemer, Parker Boudreaux, and Tony Jones Jr. very closely along with several other recruiting targets. (You can find a list of all the Notre Dame commits and targets of note that are taking part here.) Here's some observations from day one of The Opening.

- Tommy Kraemer may end up being the top offensive tackle here by the end of this camp, but he was not dominant yesterday. He wasn't bad by any stretch. Just not outstanding. And with Kraemer I kind of expected outstanding. I don't think he anchored strong enough and gave up some ground when he probably could have prevented it. It may just be him getting used to the speed of the edge rushers he has to face because there are some very good ones at this camp. Today the pads go on so I think he'll be a lot better with everything today.

- I was pleasantly surprised from what I saw from Parker Boudreaux. It's not just the SPARQ score, which was the highest out of an offensive lineman in attendance. I care way more about how competed on the field and he did a nice job against some stud defensive tackles. He won some and lost some, but always responded well. After losing badly on one rep, his next was against 5 star defensive tackle Rashard Lawrence. Boudreaux put him on the ground and Lawrence was not very happy about it.

Last year I saw Tristen Hoge lose some reps on day one of The Opening and it looked like he had lost his confidence a bit. I didn't see that with Boudreaux. Hoge got a lot better as the camp progressed and I think Boudreaux will do the same. I liked the commitment from him before (and not just because he pulled a bus in his commitment video) and I like it even more now with how he performed yesterday.

- Jones Jr. weighed in at 210 pounds, but it was a different 210 then some other kids. You can tell he still has quite a bit of physical development to do and yes, I do see him getting to the 225-230 range eventually. That's fine with me. He has a power game and yesterday he flashed great footwork that should compliment his power nicely. WIth no pads, it wasn't Jones Jr.'s day to shine. Hopefully I get to see him catch some passes in the 7 on 7 portion of the event today and showcase his skills in that area.

- All the talk about Chase Claypool as a player has been about him possibly getting too big to stick at receiver. Yesterday he showed me he can hang with the elite at the position and him being a jumbo receiver might actually be the best fit for him. He showed strong hands and was a much better route runner than I expected. He frequently created separation from himself and the defensive backs covering him.

Notre Dame should hopefully be getting some good news when he announces later this week and as of right now I'd probably take the athlete label away for him and slot him at wide receiver if he joins the 2016 recruiting class.

- With my first look at him in person yesterday, I'm pretty sure I can say with certainty that linebacker Caleb Kelly is not quite Jaylon Smith. That's no knock on Kelly. More of a nod to what an exceptional athlete Smith is.

Kelly is an extremely fluid athlete, though, and looks downright slim at 219 pounds. He is bigger and more physical player than Smith was at this age in my opinion. I'm excited to see what kind of things he can do in coverage today and tomorrow.

- I didn't get to see wide receiver Javon McKinley much today. He's at the top of my list to focus on tomorrow.

- I know it's a long shot, but defensive end Oluwole Betiku is the kind of talent that Notre Dame is missing on the defensive line. He is put together physically and seems to get better with every rep he takes. I think he is going to be a special football player and he looked very good going against Kraemer and Boudreaux in one on ones yesterday.

- The other player who from California that is likely a long shot is Brandon Burton. I think he can be an impact player at free safety and he showed great ball skills yesterday and also looked great playing man coverage. He's not even going to get to do what he does best because there is not hitting in this camp for defensive backs. Yesterday was just more confirmation for me that I would have him at the top of my list at the free safety position in this class.

Scout: Top Performers: Day Two

TYLER VAUGHNS
Notre Dame stood out to Vaughns early but the Irish have since faded. The five-star receiver has impressed both days here and continues to look like a true No. 1 wide out. Word around Vaughns is that admissions would be an issue for Notre Dame even if the Irish were able to recapture his attention. His recruitment remains a mystery despite his Los Angeles connections.

AUSTIN MACK
The former Notre Dame target more than held his own on Thursday. Only Vaughns was better among the receivers and there was a gap between those two and everybody else. Mack showed body control in making contested touchdown catches and was a favorite of his team’s quarterback stable of Shea Patterson and Dillon Sterling-Cole.

DAELIN HAYES
Hayes plans to visit Notre Dame this fall for the USC weekend, although considering he’s a Trojans’ pledge from Michigan, that might be a matter of convenience. Too bad for the Irish because Hayes turned in another strong day. He wasn’t the best linebacker overall, but he was tops among those with an Irish connection. Notre Dame just needs to stay in touch and hope for the best.

CHASE CLAYPOOL
Claypool had a quiet morning but turned up the volume Thursday afternoon with a circus touchdown catch and a clean grab in traffic. They were polished plays from a raw athlete. All signs point to Notre Dame landing the Canadian on Friday to give the Irish some juice from The Opening, an event dominated by USC and Florida State. Claypool will be one to watch tomorrow.

OLUWOLE BETIKU
Notre Dame isn’t in on many defensive linemen here, but Betiku continues to impress. He might be the most coachable prospect at the entire event, something that should further pique Irish interest. Betiku is certainly the most fit too. He doesn’t have the size of some of the SEC area linemen, but that’s because he has Jaylon Smith levels of body fat. He would be a class-changing get.

PARKER BOUDREAUX
The Opening coaches don’t have Boudreaux as the best guard here, but he’s in the top half of the offensive linemen through two days. Strength continues to be his biggest asset. Improving his athleticism will be the next step to round out his game. The staff likes the tenacity Boudreaux brings to the line. There’s no fear of getting dirty in the trenches.

JEFFREY MCCULLOCH
Notre Dame will get a visit from McCulloch later this month and again during the season if all goes to plan. That means the Irish will host one of the better linebackers at the entire Opening. He had two interceptions during his first 7-on-7 game and plays bigger than his listed 6-foot-1, 230-pound frame. He’d fit nicely with the linebacker talent already in South Bend.

ERIC CUFFEE
Notre Dame’s defensive back targets didn’t do much on Thursday, although Cuffee had a pick during the afternoon 7-on-7 sessions. He visited for the Irish Invasion and put Notre Dame in his top 11, with an official visit likely. Word around Cuffee is the in-state schools lead, or at least that’s the perception coming from Texas.

OFD: The Opening - Day 2 Observations

There was a lot more stuff that happened yesterday on day two of the 2015 version of The Opening. Around about twelve more hours of stuff to be exact.

That's a lot of football to pack in one day and that meant there is plenty to talk about regarding Notre Dame commits and targets. Here's some of my observations from yesterday's action:

- Tommy Kraemer was not allowed to wear pads even though almost all of the other linemen were (boo!) due to a rule that has to do with him being from Ohio (more boo!). He did still get some work in during the one on one pass rush session, though, (yay!) and he looked impressive. His technique might be the best out of any of the offensive linemen in attendance in terms of his balance and ability to re-set when he faces a counter move from a rusher. He did well against Ohio State commit Jonothan Cooper, probably the best edge rusher in attendance, and was able to win his reps against him. There is no lunging with him. He's just solid all the way around.

I wish I got to see him run block today, but I have no concerns with him in that area in the future at Notre Dame. Today I feel I got a better idea that he could project to left tackle, even if the right side might be his best fit. Heck, he looked pretty good at guard when he took a couple of reps there as well. Making the Final 5 may be out of reach for him because of the no pads issues, but he certainly lived up to what I thought he was going to be so far.

- It was a bit of a weird day for Parker Boudreaux. He didn't take a lot of reps, although there were plenty to go around in a nearly three hour practice. Maybe he was nursing an injury? I'm not sure what the case was.

When he did take reps yesterday in run blocking drills and pass rush one on ones, it was a little bit more of what I expected from this week. He struggled against 5 star defensive tackle Derrick Brown and his pad level seemed to be too high for most of the day. When facing this defensive tackle group, which is far better than last year's group and I thought last year's group was very good, it's not a surprise that there are going to be some bad reps. When your technique isn't on point, you're going to get beat. He didn't shine yesterday, but today is new day and hopefully he bounces back.

- I'm sure everyone will be excited if wide receiver Chase Claypool commits to Notre Dame tomorrow and this is me telling you that you are allowed to get even more excited. His 7 on 7 team is loaded with talent, so he didn't see the ball a ton, but he made a couple of spectacular catches where he went up and high pointed the ball and showed what a tough matchup he can be for smaller cornerbacks. The thing is, every cornerback is going to be a lot smaller than Claypool. He is a "dude". Every site that has him as 3 star probably won't have him as a 3 star for too much longer after the completion of this camp.

- Running back commit Tony Jones Jr. was not supposed to shine this week, but I really like what I saw from him today catching the football. He got open a lot against some athletic linebackers today and he showed very good hands. Yes, he's a power back. He's showing he can also can be a potential weapon in the passing game for Notre Dame.

- I liked linebacker Jeffrey McCulloch a lot as a prospect coming into this camp and it's awesome to hear he has a serious interest in Notre Dame. He made a great catch on an interception that showed what kind of ball skills he has in coverage. This kid is even better when they put the pads on and is an absolute thumper as a tackler.

- Speaking of putting the pads on, back to the linemen and what seems like everyone's dream defensive line target in this class: Oluwole Betiku. He still has so much room to improve, but the spectacular flashes he shows are awesome to watch. He pretty much had the most violent push pull move I have ever witnessed in person when he actually hurt 2017 5 star offensive tackle Calvin Ashley. Linemen get hyped all the time when they see something crazy like that, but what he did was something I had never seen before. I hope that Ashley ends up being okay and can participate today, but I have to admit it was kind of amazing to watch. The defensive line coach in me wanted to knock over the chains and run over and congratulate Betiku.

- Caleb Kelly is fluid, athletic, and can definitely run well, but he is a bit different than some of the other outside linebackers here. He is physically more mature and plays like it. You know the whole concept of having a Sam who plays more versus running teams and a Sam who plays more versus spread teams? Kelly is the guy who can do both. He was very physical with tight ends with his jam when I saw him and for good measure he also had a pick six in his team's final game of the day.

He can play Sam or Will and I think be a great fit at either position.

The Opening: Thursday's Overall Top Performers

The nation's No. 1 prospect defensive tackle Rashan Gary was the top performer in the trenches, pushed by Houston defensive tackle commit Ed Oliver. Two more Top100 defensive linemen in Antwuan Jackson and Oluwole Betiku stood out, while on the offensive side of the ball Texas A&M five-star commit Gregory Little was the top offensive linemen, Kentucky commit Drake Jackson had a memorable performance and Michigan pledge Michael Onwenu was a force as usual.

The duo of uncommitted receiverFreddie Swain and Florida State five-star tight end commit Isaac Nauta came up big for Mach Speed, while Binjimen Victor and 2017 five-star Donovan Peoples-Jones were two more receivers the offense counted on. Defensively, Seminoles commit Jamel Cook, along with athlete Brandon Burton and 2017 linebacker Markail Benton led the charge.

USC is bringing in quite a linebacker haul as commits Mique Juarez and Daelin Hayes both were beasts for Team Lunarbeast. Ohio State receiver commit Austin Mack was one of the top pass catchers on the field and fellow Buckeyes pledge Jake Hausmann also turned in a good day.

Another potential USC commit in, receiver Trevon Sidney was the guy for Alpha Pro, while Trojans lean Jack Jones also was terrific. Alabama is getting two good ones in tight end Miller Forristall and athlete Shyheim Carter.

Team Fly Rush has an outstanding trio of receivers in A.J. Brown, Donnie Corley and top-ranked Kyle Davis, while Nigel Warrior was dominant in the secondary. Clemson linebacker commit Rahshaun Smith was very disruptive with his long frame.

Team Hypercool was led by Stanford quarterback commit K.J. Costello who spread the ball around to his future teammate, tight end Kaden Smith and receivers Tyler Vaughns and Chase Claypool, while another Cardinal lean, cornerback David Long was the top performer in the secondary.

The DMV represented well for Team Superbad led by Maryland quarterback commit Dwayne Haskins, athlete Trevon Diggs and linebacker Aaron Hansford. Tight end Naseir Upshur, a Michigan lean, was outstanding as well.

Actually not at all that impressed by him. Big kid, moves well but I don't see the elite level that an Alize Jones, previously class #1 TE was. I see solid, but nothing close to elite. Not even close. Stiff, some what lumbering, good hands but no real separation. Decent feet but can't get out of breaks that well. In fact after watching Brock Wright run at II, he'd be the best TE at the opening. Hausman is overrated, same goes for Asiasi (not a TE), Upshir, etc.
