Lucky has talked about this kid a couple of times and some articles have popped up so I started the thread

Illinois DE boasts Irish connection

Romeo McKnight is just starting to enjoy some recruiting momentum after a standout camp performance earlier this spring. Notre Dame recently checked on the three-star defensive end with a hometown connection to the program.

Last month Romeo McKnight wondered if major college football was in his future.

Wrestling at the next level might have been an option for McKnight, who won the Illinois Class 2A 220-pound state championship last winter. But the Crystal Lake, Ill., native wanted to make a football future happen. He went to The Opening Regional outside Chicago with that in mind.

“I wasn’t really recruited,” said McKnight, a three-star defensive end. “I was talking to a couple I-AA schools going into the NIKE camp. I had a pretty good camp, made it into the Final 5 and got to go against a five-star tackle three times, so that was big. Things kinda started taking off from there. I got a couple offers the next week. Then it was a couple more offers then Iowa offered.”

McKnight now has several options with more programs waiting in the wings.

Ball State, Bowling Green, Buffalo, Toledo, Western Illinois and Wyoming have all offered. Iowa has done the same, becoming the first Power 5 team to do so. McKnight has since visited Iowa City.

Others expressing interest include Indiana, Notre Dame, Penn State and Wisconsin. The Irish dispatched an assistant to Crystal Lake Central this week.

“They came and they told my coach that I should expect one but it’s a process,” McKnight said. “They’ve gotta get through the person that recruits my area, he checked the list. The d-line coach checked off, so now the d-coordinator and the head coach are up next. Now it’s just waiting.”

McKnight is familiar with Notre Dame after spending most of his childhood in South Bend. He still has a bunch of family in the area and attended several games before moving to Crystal Lake.

He also boasts an interesting connection to campus history.

“My grandpa helped architect the inside of the Golden Dome,” McKnight said. “He got free tickets to a lot of stuff for awhile. They’re just consistently dominant. I love Notre Dame. They’re a great school.”

McKnight hopes to include Notre Dame on a string of summer visits that could also include Indiana, Missouri and Wisconsin. Despite the recruiting process just getting started in earnest, McKnight envisions it being complete by the end of the summer.

“I’d like to have it all over by the beginning of the season,” he said. “I’ll take a couple visits this summer and am kinda hoping to know a couple weeks before the season or something like that so I can focus on my team and winning.”

One of the most important trips McKnight has scheduled is Sound Mind, Sound Body camp in suburban Detroit next month. Several college programs in the region will be sending staff members, including Notre Dame.

Brian Kelly is expected, along with Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh, Michigan State coach Mike Dantonio and Ohio State’s Urban Meyer.

Working out in front of those coaches and their assistants will give the 6-foot-4, 225-pound prospect a chance to show a skill set his junior film doesn’t necessarily spotlight.

“I didn’t really play any defensive end despite a quarter’s worth,” McKnight said. “We ran a defense where I was an outside linebacker. I didn’t get to put my hand on the ground and pass rush. I was just quick off the ball. I’m still raw with my pass-rushing moves and being able to fight hands and stuff like that. Getting to the quarterback was big at the camp.”

I live in Crystal Lake, didn't realize that Crystal Lake Central had someone we were interested in. I'll have to go to a game or two this season. For reference, CL is right next to Cary, where Ruhland is from.

Scout: Learning curve for McKnight

FORT WAYNE - Crystal Lake (Ill.) Central three-star defensive end Romeo McKnight is enjoying increased attention in the recruitment process, including interest from Notre Dame, as he learns the ropes of playing a new position.

FORT WAYNE - Irish assistant Mike Elston was present last Sunday at the AWP Sports R.A.S. Showcase. One of the players he was evaluating was three-star defensive end Romeo McKnight of Crystal Lake (Ill.) Central.

"This is the second time they've seen me play this spring," McKnight said. "The defensive backs coach came in a few weeks ago. I know they're just kind of waiting for these camps to happen because they haven't seen enough film of me at defensive end yet. I've played all outside linebacker in our 3-4 scheme, but this year I'm playing defensive end and running back. They want a few different coaches to see me play before they offer."

McKnight also excels in wrestling, and last fall he took home the Illinois Class 2A 220-pound state championship last winter.

Notre Dame will get another in-person evaluation of McKnight at Sound Mind Sound Body Football Academy camp held in Detroit this week. Brian Kelly, Mark Dantonio, Jim Harbaugh and Urban Meyer are among the coaches expected to be in attendance.

"I also might be going to Irish Invasion, but that's the same time as Iowa's camp, so I haven't decided on that, yet."

McKnight, who moved to Illinois when he was 10-years old, is originally from South Bend and has family connections to Notre Dame.

"My grandfather (Gary Hartman) helped architect the golden dome," McKnight said. "I was a huge Notre Dame fan, and I still am. I love Notre Dame. It's a great school with so much tradition behind it. An offer from them would be huge."

The 6-foot-4, 225-pound athlete boasts offers from Ball State, Buffalo, Iowa, Toledo, Western Michigan and Wyoming.

This summer McKnight plans to camp at Iowa and Wisconsin and potentially Missouri and Minnesota.

"I am hoping for offers from Missouri and Indiana, the schools that have started to recruit me a lot," McKnight said.

Not to bash the kid because he looks to have decent upside but it's crazy Ohio State turns away Josh King and Auston Roberston and we are still trying to find immediate contributors for that side of the ball next season. ND would consider that a home run class if we would have gotten those two.

I very much agree with Coach D on this one. Very few players in this class will be taking meaningful PT from our, then, Junior class DE's in year 1.

GB, very much woe is me lately. You have a new lady, summer is here, the team looks ready to play well, and your posts are littered with feeling bad for yourself. Cheer up buddy.

I'm not feeling bad or trying to be negative I get what you are saying and not saying you are wrong but I don't mean to come off that way. Just worried a little worried about recruiting at the moment but I'll let the summer play out. I'll be alright man lol

Would you take John Ryan back for a year?

John Ryan was maybe the only DE I've ever seen who could play every snap of a football game and not record a single tackle or assisted tackle. It was like he was a black hole of production. I don't even know if he was *bad* -- he was like the football equivalent of a tree falling in the forrest while no one's around to hear it.

He always made me feel like I had a chance to play.
