This explanation is laughable.

"Well It's possible something happens to some kids, so what's the big deal?"

Let's pump the brakes on the Ohio State 'oversigning' panic - Land-Grant Holy Land

Overlooking it's defensive tone, it's not a bad justification piece. Comparing Ohio State's and Alabama's recruiting numbers, Ohio State has signed 123 recruits over the last five classes and Alabama has signed 125 recruits. Ohio State had nine scholarships taken away over that period due to sanctions, though.

An Ohio State blog, Eleven Warriors, decried in 2011 the "Oversigning Bowl" - the National Championship - between Alabama and LSU.
If you're somehow unfamiliar with how oversigning works, here's the one-sentence summary: Oversigning programs like Alabama and LSU purge their 85-man rosters of underperforming players by either citing medical hardship, issuing grayshirts, encouraging transfers, natural attrition or - when the summer is over and the season is about to start with still too many scholarship players on the roster - abruptly pulling enough scholarships to get down to 85.

Last year, Eleven Warriors had an article on Alabama's roster management and how number crunching to get to 85: "So where will those open slots come from? Candidate places for freeing up space: Early graduation, voluntary transfers, involuntary other transfers, career-ending injuries, dismissal from the team for violating something ambiguous.

However, Alabama isn't just oversigned this year; it's really, really oversigned."

Finally, in response to oversigning with this year's Ohio State class, their recent article breaks down why so many players have left Ohio State recently responding:
"And while the numbers might seem high at first glance... consider any of those cases one-by-one. It's not like a doctor is going to sign off on a fake injury to force a player into retirement. And while Urban isn't allowed to cut outright for lack of talent, it doesn't mean some of these transfers aren't player initiated or due to disciplinary reasons off-the-record."

Taking a page out of Nick Saban's response to oversigning:
"Any player that has left this program prematurely has created his own exit route," Saban said. "He's created his own conditions for leaving, if that makes any sense, whether they're academic in terms of not doing what he needs to do academically, whether there's some violation in terms of team rule or policy, whatever it is. Some of these things we're not allowed to comment on.

If someone could Provide proof of this, I'd appreciate it so I can go to war with my coworkers.

One of Ohio State's Class of 2015 who was an early enrollee is off the team
Jamel Dean Leaving Ohio State

"While the Ohio State doctors have not cleared Dean, sources at Cocoa tell Bucknuts that the defensive back has indeed been cleared by external doctors (including Dr. James Andrews) and that they believe he will be able to play college football."

High school coach of Ohio State football freshman Jamel Dean says Dean is being pushed off team

"It's ridiculous," John Wilkinson told Northeast Ohio Media Group on Wednesday. "It's totally wrong to do this to an 18-year-old kid who should be in high school, who you talked into coming up there early.

"You can't treat people this way."

"I go on a kid-by-kid basis, and this is about Jamel, it's not about the other kids," Wilkinson said. "It's about taking care of a kid who was committed to you for 18 months, and you're pushing him out before he even got an opportunity. He didn't get a chance to do anything."

Sickening and guilty. How would you like to be their team doctor and have to explain why you think he's not able to perform but Dr. James Frickin Andrews says he is??? If I were them and saw a microphone being pointed at me I'd say, "I'll have to let Gene Smith and Coach Meyers fill you in on their... I mean the staff's findings"

I hate college athletics when it comes to this GARBAGE!

Is someone going to cite the source of this claim?

Figured this was the best place for this since we don't have a real tOSU thread:

Cardale Jones, JT Barrett conversation

Cardale Jones, JT Barrett conversation - ESPN Video

Tom Rinaldi: "There's a coaching cliche that says if you have two quarterbacks, you really have none. What's your take on that Cardale?"

Cardale Jones: "I feel sorry for Notre Dame."

The comment was made in jest, but the Buckeye websites are having a laugh with that.
However, I can see now that Cardale didn't come to play school, because 3 > 2

To be fair, the quote sounds worse than it actually is without the context of the rest of the quote. Jones goes on to say that ND ONLY has two QBs to OSU's 3. It's more tongue-in-cheek about OSU's situation than it is a dig at ND I think.

Most manufactured "controversy" maybe of all time. Kelly originally said he'd take his QBs over any in the country except OSU... but that he'd still take them over OSU with a little tongue-in-cheek of his own (i.e. well, and I'm not going to say my guys are worse than anyone, soooooo...).

Then Cardale Jones got asked a dumb question and gave a rather funny response... "blah blah blah 2 QBs means you have none blah blah blah" ... "I feel sorry for Notre Dame... haha just playin'... good thing we've got 3..." basically just pointing out how dumb the cliche is. The entire interview with him and JT is great.

After parting ways under less than amicable circumstances, Ohio State early enrollee Jamel Dean tweets that he'll be playing at Auburn. As Dean never suited up for the Buckeyes, as long as he's granted a full release from his scholarship, he should have four years of eligibility and be eligible immediately. The Buckeyes and Dean parted ways after OSU's medical staff refused to clear Dean for participation this winter.

Ferns recruitment will kind of start over

Sitting at eighty-eight scholarship players for 2015. Ohio State has fifteen verbal commitments for the Class of 2016 - and thirteen seniors who will use up their eligibility in 2015. Of course, if the three scholarship players who will move on to get them to eighty-five come in 2015 from that senior class, they will have ten scholarships to give towards the fifteen verbal commitments.

Last year, Ohio State had eighty-seven scholarship players after NSD. Five players had taken medical redshirts. So, two players in their '15 class (27) did not to enroll to meet eighty-five (one did not qualify and the other, controversially, was denied for medical reasons after signing).

This year Ohio State is at eighty-seven after NSD once again. Nine players declared early for the NFL draft by Jan 15th. They signed a class of twenty-four. One of those signees is expected to grayshirt.

Also, two walkon seniors were granted full scholarships in January - but are not counted in the eighty-seven, because they are not expected to be on scholarship by the fall when Ohio State has to be at eighty-five.

Ohio State has only two redshirt Seniors in 2016, both of whom are expected to start. So attrition - in whatever form - will have to come from current players with eligibility left and before they graduate. Big Ten schools grant four year scholarships.

In comparison, Alabama has signed fifty players (to OSU's fifty-one) over the last two classes, given only one player a medical redshirt (to OSU's six) and has had only one grayshirt in the four classes '13-'16.

Ohio State has signed 98 recruits over the last four classes (Alabama - 102) and 123 recruits over the last five (Alabama 128). The difference of five scholarship players over five years is the number of scholarships Ohio State lost due to sanctions.

Since Meyer came, Ohio State has signed virtually the same number of recruits (considering sanctions) as Alabama, had five more medical redshirts and with the same number of grayshirts.

Spring Practice

Spring Practice

NSD brought in a class of 23 to 64 players currently on scholarship. Ohio State had lost twelve players to graduation and another nine to early entry to the NFL. Sixteen starters are gone from last year's team.

Ohio State had seven early enrollees, so they started with seventy-one players for spring practices. However, fourteen players currently are injured with nine of them done for all spring practices. Five of those fourteen are starters, likely starters or potential starters.

They practice this spring with fifty-seven scholarship players. Only four starters from last year are practicing.

The annual Ohio State Scholarship Crunch

The annual Ohio State Scholarship Crunch

OHIO STATE HAS PLENTY TO SHAKE OUT BEFORE NATIONAL SIGNING DAY WITH ITS SCHOLARSHIP SITUATION (Eleven Warriors)

Meyer, like any top-tier coach, is not exempt from processing guys for medical or other reasons in order to free up spots so he can sign a bigger class in February. The 85 limit hamstrings coaches and programs that wish to compete each year at the highest level and win national titles, which is expected at Ohio State.

Meyer probably won't speak to the media again until National Signing Day but it will be interesting to see which players the Buckeyes say are done playing for medical reasons, academic reasons, a transfer or something else entirely. Programs must be at the 85 limit by the time Autumn Semester classes begin or practice for that season opens, whichever comes first. For 2017, Ohio State opens classes this fall on Aug. 22. Camp will start earlier than that because the first game is Aug. 31 at Indiana.

Meyer and his staff are set to hit the road recruiting on Jan. 12 when the dead period comes to a close. There is a ton of talent still available on the market and Ohio State is expected to raise that number of commitments from 17 to somewhere in the low to mid-20s starting as early as this weekend with the U.S. Army All-American Bowl scheduled for Saturday afternoon. Targets Jeffrey Okudah, Darnay Holmes and Bubba Bolden are all set to announce their college plans at some point during the game.

AN UPDATE ON OHIO STATE'S TREK TO REACH THE 85 SCHOLARSHIP LIMIT WITH TWO WEEKS LEFT UNTIL NATIONAL SIGNING DAY (Eleven Warriors)

After three transfers, six early entrants to the draft and Tyjon Lindsey decommitting...

As a result, Ohio State is at 88 scholarships.

The Buckeyes want another defensive tackle in the class, are flirting with the idea of adding another running back and hope to bring in a couple more players at other positions before it is all said and done. For example, Jay Tufele (DT), Thayer Munford (OT) and Marvin Wilson (DT) are three players Ohio State continues to recruit.

Blake Haubeil, K, plans to gray shirt and is not counted. Med scholarships?

Yeah, if they want to be scum like Meyer
"Meyer, like any top-tier coach, is not exempt from processing guys for medical or other reasons in order to free up spots so he can sign a bigger class in February."
"Processing guys" is just a nice way of saying "Fuck you, get off my team." "Hey, you're not elite enough for us, even though we promised you 4 years if you'd commit. How about you take a hike, I've got fresh blood to bring in." Screw that. I'm glad we offer full 4 year scholarships. The medicals we have offered in the past have been fairly consistent I think, given to players that have had repeated injuries...and a few of those still end up staying on the team like Baratti. The way some schools treat recruiting is like a meat market, and it's disgraceful.

Ohio State currently has sixty-eight scholarship players with nineteen commits for the Class of '17 = 87. (Latest attrition is Stephen Collier linked by Dublin). Big 10 rules restrict teams to 88 after NSD.

Five targets are left:
Marvin Wilson, DT - slim chance
Jay Tufule, DT - In top 2, prob Utah
Oliver Martin, WR - has not visited, rescheduling OV?
James Robinson, WR (Fla commit) - OV 1/20 - doubtful
Thayer Munford, OL - OV 1/21. Ohio State is the favorite. But no offer. Possibly waiting on academics. Possibly a Plan B if scholarship is available

So, Ohio State could go 0-5 on the remaining targets.

Interesting article on Munford
OHSAA & Massillon lawyers reach deal to restore eligibility for Thayer Munford

OHSAA Associate Commissioner Deborah Moore ruled Munford was ineligible to play at Massillon on Aug. 11 after she deemed he was recruited based on Bylaw 4-9-4, No. 8. That bylaw states a coach can not have any contact with a student-athlete at his former school after taking another job.

(Nate) Moore was the coach at La Salle prior to coming to Massillon in 2015. Munford played on La Salle’s 2014 and 2015 teams that won Division II state titles, and then moved to Massillon when the Moore’s (sic) became his legal guardians.

Nate Moore coached Munford as a sophomore in 2014 when La Salle beat Nordonia in the Division II state title game. Moore moved to Massillon in 2015 while Munford stayed at La Salle and helped his team beat Perry in the 2015 Division II state title game.

To become eligible for the October 14th game, Munford needed to get a 2.0.

Munford, who is 6-foot-6 and 322-pounds, has college scholarship offers from Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, Illinois, Ohio, Cincinnati, Indiana, Bowling Green, Buffalo, Iowa State, Miami [OH], Pittsburgh, Memphis, Maryland, Central Florida, Temple, Purdue, Rutgers, Louisville, Penn State and West Virginia.

OHIO STATE WILL FACE ANOTHER NUMBERS CRUNCH IN 2019

The NCAA mandates that programs must be down to 85 scholarship players on their roster by the time the first day of classes or fall camp rolls around. And with just 10 seniors on this year’s scholarship grid, Ohio State will be well over the limit in 2019 if it signs another full recruiting class.

The Buckeyes already hold nine commitments this cycle, and have yet to land a quarterback or fully address concerns at wide receiver and along the offensive line. That means every new pledge following the next commitment will have to be met with an early departure for the National Football League, unforeseen transfer or medical hardship.

“We're trying to fill a roster that I can't tell you who's leaving, who's coming,” head coach Urban Meyer said during the Early Signing Period in December, illustrating how recently enacted NCAA rules only accelerate and make the roster management process more difficult. “I have some ideas, and there's been preliminary talk, but certainly you talk about life-changing decisions for those guys and life-changing decisions for young people.

“What happens if you oversign and a young man doesn't decide to go to the NFL when he told you he was? That's his right. You can't hold that against him,” he continued. “What I've had happen to me is, I’ve talked to several players, and my answer to them — because we're straightforward with them — is that I don't know if I have a scholarship right now because I don't know who's leaving for the NFL Draft.”
