That was a great episode. Loved it. Rick is BAMF. Glad to see him reunite with Morgan at the end. I do wish it had ended with the wolves at the gate though. I wonder how long that story line will play out.
I'm not sure why people feel that someone important always has to die during a season finale. It doesn't happen more than it does happen with this show.
Maybe not a major character, but they do tend to kill someone off from the group at the end of every season. Even if it isn't someone from the group, it ends up being a memorable death in other ways, like the Governor's daughter getting killed and his eye getting gouged out. In any case, it's usually either a memorable death or a memorable moment:
End of Season 1: Jacqui and the Doctor die in the CDC together, big explosion. I guess there was a deleted scene as well where the group goes back to the nursing home where the Latinos are taking care of the elderly, only to find that they've all been executed and ransacked...didn't know that to now, and they were minor characters, just always wondered what happened to that group.
Season 2, 1st half: Group finds Sophia finally, only to find out she's a walker. Pretty powerful ending to the 1st half. Even though Sophia was a walker at this point, you can effectively call this a big death given how it happened and the uncertainty up to this point.
Season 2, 2nd half: We have the big escape from the farm as walkers completely overrun it. Jimmy dies, Patricia dies, and I want to say one or two others. You could also put Shane's death in here, since it happened right at the end of the previous episode and was still somewhat unresolved since the entire episode was basically lots of running and dying. Not a lot of major deaths, but there was definitely a lot of death overall and it was intense. One of my favorite endings, just so much energy.
Season 3, 1st half: No real big deaths here, Oscar goes down...minor character, but he was still a part of the group. Big assault on Woodbury. Governor's daughter is taken out by Michone, obviously not part of the group but it was cool and a pivotal moment in the Governor's evolution. The Governor also gets his eye taken out in the episode, which was badass. It wasn't one of their better endings to a half season, but it was a nice setup of the Governor's story for the future.
Season 3, 2nd half: Lots of deaths here, Andrea's being the most notable. As far as minor character deaths, Milton is in there, Allen, and a shit ton of the Woodbury armed citizens. I think Axl dies here too, not a major character, but he was integrated with the group by this point.
Season 4, 1st half: Probably the biggest death up to this point, and maybe one of the biggest deaths on the show as Hershel gets decapitated by the Governor. Lots more of the Governor's people die here, including the little girl Meghan and Tara's lover, Alisha.
Season 4, 2nd half: No group deaths here, although we got the sweet confrontation with the Claimers where Rick rips the guys throat out. That was probably better than anyone in the group possibly dying. Everyone gets reunited at Terminus, it was a decent episode despite the fact that the only people that died were the Claimers and one Termite.
Season 5, 1st half: Beth dies, along with the bitch cop. I don't remember any other big deaths, the episode was definitely centered on Beth though. I probably didn't care about Beth one bit until Season 5, and maybe I just started caring a bit by the time they killed her off. Wasn't a huge death, but I guess they at least tried to endear her to fans before she got axed.
Season 5, 2nd half (tonight): Pete and Deanna's husband die, nobody from Rick's immediate group die, but lots of good action and some big things occur like getting reintroduced to Morgan. Still a decent episode, pretty good action involved and the dialogue was good. Rick killing Pete was almost perfect imo, it was my favorite moment of the episode. You can see what a different guy he is now. The old Rick would have hesitated to do something about Pete, maybe exile him like the Alexandrians were going to do to him. Not anymore. No sooner does Deanna say "Do it" that Rick turns and "BOOM!" It was so fluid and without hesitation or remorse for the loss of life, it didn't need a lot of drama and pauses to make a point.
So...out of 9 possible season ending or half-season ending episodes we have maybe 2 or 3 where someone from Rick's group doesn't die, and when they didn't we still got big moments I think. That's more often than not, and while they're not all major deaths, they at least leave off a season/half-season with a bang. I know a lot of people were wondering if Daryl was going to get the axe, rumors were swirling that Daryl sold his house in Atlanta which made some fans question.
Overall I'd be lying if I said I wasn't expecting a big death here. They teased it quite a bit, and a lot of people were pointing to comments from cast members earlier in the season. Stuff like Norman Reedus saying "Get your tissues out," and stuff like that. Guess he was referring to the horse dying there?

That was probably the saddest part of the last few episodes, and Noah dying I guess (Barely got to know him). I'm not terribly disappointed we didn't get a big death, but ultimately I think they need to cull the herd at Alexandria sometime soon because it's too time consuming to develop 15+ characters for a show. When you take all of Rick's crew, plus a few major Alexandria characters, that's just too many people that demand screen time. We lost Noah and Tyreese only to gain Morgan back and now a bunch of Alexandrians. If someone like Rosita died right now I'd be only sad because it's be one less pretty face. As a character she's had maybe 5 minutes of total screen time and no one is emotionally invested in her. Similar situation to Beth prior to Season 5, she had little screen time up till then and she kind of got pushed down the viewers throats at the end just before they killed her (Pretty horrible execution imo, the writers tend to fail when they are forced to write original material that deviates from the comic).
Anyawy, I'm not sure what I'm really saying any more. Good episode, was expecting a big death or at least a few more minor character deaths, but they still did a pretty good job. Hopefully they'll cull the herd a bit better next season so we can get maybe some more Abraham and a few others that had bigger roles in the comics.
