Mykelti and Farrar are both quality players.

You know something I don't about Farrar?

That might be true, but we knew all along that S was a position of need (and apparently for awhile that McKinney was on the way out). I know the staff can's snap their fingers and get an all-world S recruit but to be days away from NSD and still not have a 2nd safety when that S will be ON THE 2 DEEP AS A TRUE FRESHMAN is a little ridiculous.

I'll also add that both of our starting safeties were benched for Northwestern in favor of Collinsworth (coming back from a serious injury) and Tranquill (who hadn't played a deep S position all season). If the staff has that little confidence in Redfield and Shumate, then maybe S should have been higher on the ol' priority list.

I'm not asking for perfection, just pointing out that the staff hasn't completely hit it out of the park this cycle.

Very good? Yes. But we're rather fortunate that Dexter Williams was willing to flip and that Farrar decommited from Stanford. Most years we won't have that luxury when we whiff on important positions in recruiting.

1) I don't know everything about Farrar, but I do know he is a consensus 4 star player and the 15th ranked player at his position in the entire country on the Composite rankings. I have no idea how you determine what quality means, but if a kid who is the consensus 15th player in the nation at his position isn't considered quality I think your criteria is absurd.

We will have three kids in this class playing safety when all is said and done IMO. Could the staff have recruited safety better this cycle? Yes, of course, and it's been well documented and discussed. But we are thankfully going to wind up with some quality players after our scrambling. They aren't our first choices, but it's awesome for us that we can still get guys like these after missing on several.

Not taking sides, but he's a 3-star on Scout FWIW.

I was only counting safeties we currently have commited, hence why I questioned Farrar. I'm excited about him, but he didn't sign an LOI yet. You know?

I know that we'll have bodies back there. We won't start camp with 3 safeties and Air Bud Golder Receiver in the defensive backfield. But obviously those guys (White, Butler, etc.) were not recruited as safeties. That, to me, is a little concerning. But don't let that reticence take anything away from the potential position switches. They may turn out well, but I'm fairly risk adverse and would prefer to have 5 bona fide safeties.

He is a 4 star via that link.

Weird, I clicked in and out 3 times and he's a 3 star. I think you're wrong, lol.

Btw, he scored a 26 on his ACT and has a 3.5 GPA and Stanford couldn't get him in. Damn.

He is a 4 star, ranked as OLB #30 in Scout's ranking.

Since 2012, edge rushing and DB recruiting have been deeply concerning. DB is still a major concern and we are throwing numbers at edge rushing in the hope one or two can develop into major players.

As many smart people have said over time, hope is not a strategy.

Agree. If we land Farrar, Williams, and Nicco, we'll have done fine--like our RB class.

The kids we were after--McKinney, Edwards, and Reid--all brought the lumber. I think when you watch Farrar's film, he's got this really deliberate style which is more about getting the job done than sending a message.

He also doesn't look like a burner, although he gets where he needs to go and is listed as a 4.5 guy. Since he is a consensus 4 star, #15 guy, I would imagine that the 40 yd is plausible since they value that stuff so highly.

All in all, I'd say Farrar look more like a FS than a SS to me, but his apparent lack of elite speed is cooling people off.

Wiltfong just posted that a source close to Farrar thinks he commits on the visit this weekend.

I'll add that they are very confident we don't get Reid. However, BK made things interesting with Meadors. They still think he ends up at UCLA but its close. Meadors will be telling coaches on Sunday and obviously Farrar will be wrapping up his visit that day. If both decided to join the class, they believe we take both. Irish247

My ideal two would be Farrar/Reid at SS and Meadors at FS. Would be sweet if that somehow happened. I really like Farrar, he has a NFL frame. But don't want him to be the over the top safety.

I think it'd be more interesting if he wasn't about to go on his UCLA love-fest. I'd give Meadors a 1% chane, personally.

That would make the 5th year situation even more interesting, huh.

Let's assume Golson Transfers? and they don't bring back Carile because of depth at WR then we should be fine if we bring in both.

Well referencing the Roster Projection thread in the original post...ND has 80 spots currently occupied including commits. Then assume Baratti is done so 79. If ND takes 2 S, ESB and Williams...we have 2 slots to choose people from the following list. Someone correct me if I'm wrong

QB - Everett Golson
Slot WR - Amir Carlisle
C/G - Nick Martin
G/C - Matthew Hegarty
C/G - Conor Hanratty
DT - Chase Hounshell
DE - Ishaq Williams (Showed interest in returning)
DE - Anthony Rabasa
LB - Jarrett Grace*
LB - Joe Schmidt
LB - Ben Councell
CB - Jalen Brown
CB/S - Eilar Hardy
CB/S - Matthias Farley

Strike Hardy, unfortunately, he's going to go the graduate transfer route.

True. Realistically to me the list is from:

QB - Everett Golson
Slot WR - Amir Carlisle
C/G - Nick Martin
G/C - Matthew Hegarty
DE - Ishaq Williams
LB - Jarrett Grace
LB - Joe Schmidt
CB/S - Matthias Farley

Also does anyone know if VanGorder will stay on scholarship or not?

I would think not. Isn't he free now that BVG has worked at ND one full year?

I have no idea. I also made a mistake because the roster list has Prentice McKinney on it so the number would be 4 5th years I think...
