Mainly what I'm getting at. Kelly better have ELITE play at QB next year. Not just good, ELITE. A make up for the last 5 seasons of mediocrity at that position. There is absolutely no reason we should be at this point in year 5 without a good year from a QB.

2010: Crist was average, got hurt, Rees came in was average, but the defense and running game stepped up.

2011: Crist sucked for a half, Rees comes in and is average with a ton of turnovers.

2012: Golson is average, then starts to improve to pretty good.

2013: Rees is average with one of the worst accuracy ratings in the country that year.

2014: Golson great yards and TD's but an ungodly amount of turnovers that not even Rees could replicate.

Unbelievable. This, along with the continued incompetence of the Bears has my blood pressure sky-rocketing.

I think Golson's passing efficiency should be really good next year. Just needs to work on ball security and the read option constantly during the offseason.

Don't worry, Zaire will return the national championship to its proper home in South Bend.

I think the all of Oregon's defensive players proved they are steroid free given how they were being bowled over by OSU on every play. When a QB is dragging your LBs for 2 additional yards after contact, it's time to do some deadlifts.

This is it, plus in the first quarter, the last time Oregon had a pass rush, they thought they could high tackle Jones. They missed a lot of big hits.

God, Herbstreit just made a pitch for this win resurrected the Big Ten. What a joke.

You can hire an elite coach before he is a known commodity (like when Florida hired Urban Meyer). Florida knew they were getting a good coach, but they almost certainly didn't realize they were getting an all-time great.

I think Kelly is a good coach and we are lucky to have him. Maybe he is the guy that can get us to the promised land, but I personally have my doubts. I think ND will just have to wait until we get lucky with an Urban to Florida type hire of an elite up and comer.

I'm really not complaining about it, nor am I upset with the current state of ND football. Just trying to objectively assess the characteristics of most championship teams.

I think Kelly had the same hype surrounding him that Urban had when he left Utah. Kelly had a history of winning at smaller programs just as Urban did. He made GVSU into THE primary DII power. He then turned Central Michigan, a team that was among the worst in the country and gave them 2 very respectable seasons before moving to Cincinnati, a team with similarly awful football history. He kinda jumped on a team that D'Antonio helped build up, but he brought them to that next level and got them competing for BCS bowls.

He simply hasn't been able to translate that offensive success he had with Cincy to ND. It's a different level, and it requires dedication to the run game. Kelly has had a difficult time battling his ego with the pass. He wants to air-raid his opponent's into submission, but the key is to spread things out, and give your RB's the holes to run through. He's shone glimpses of giving into the proper play calling, but he seems to fall back into old habits when he feels he has the need or the want to do so.

That being said, when Kelly calls it quits, ND better keep a close eye on Tom Herman.

Good lord that's atrocious. If not for ND's requisite annual WTF loss, we'd be in the playoffs or at least 11-1 every year with that schedule.

Why hate? I simply think we will have another shot to be there again next year. Kudos to the Buckeyes for beating us and winning it all. I take nothing away from them but they won't be overwhelming favorites to win it all next year. Several teams will be in the thick of it as well.

Been watching too much Pawwwwl and hearing all the delusional ass fans predictions.

Don't watch Pawl too much. Try to catch the national guys as I can't stand the crazy callers. My team will be just fine though. Got a lot of holes to fill and gonna need a few players to step up. But it feels good to be the hunter and not the hunted going in to next year. Maybe a year or two away from bringing it home but I gotta think Saban has one more in him before he rides off.

Time to accept and take our place in the middle of the pack in recruiting for the foreseeable future. We will get Urban's scraps, then Jim's and hope for the best from there. In order to somehow keep the wheels from completely falling off, Kelly must find a way to get into the playoffs next season. The miracle would be to play OSU and actually upset them, one can dream.

Are you sure you want that? I don't think our defense is physical enough to play them.

True. As an alumnus, I've thought about it a lot - whether I'd be ok with ND lowering recruiting academic standards, possibly do some shady things in the recruiting world, let our players get away with more, give them more joke classes (don't kid yourself with the Film and TV major), etc.

I just don't believe that ND needs to do "shady" things to be an elite program. The problem is they don't seem to be committed to winning in the things that aren't shady. There's no reason they can't have the best facilities or pay top dollar for their coaches (assistants as well).
I always go back to the training table issue and remember how long (they studied the players weights for like a year) it took them to get one meal for the players. If they really wanted to do what it takes to be elite, they would make every meal a training table meal by making it available to all the students. It just seems like they're always playing catch up. Maybe they're happy with the status quo. Who knows.

If you're Jones, do you enter the draft? You may not even start next year. You didn't go to OSU to play school.

EDIT: He's also already 22 years old.

Stanford has already provided the blueprint for beating Oregon, beat them up on both lines of scrimmage and force them to run outside. There wasn't a comparison between those two teams. Oregon couldn't tackle, their receivers couldn't block on the outside, etc. OSU gave them every opportunity to beat them and couldn't take advantage of it.

Jones has 48 hours to declare. Is this a Ryan Leif or Jamarcus Wilson scenario or will he declare and be pretty good? You know there will be a team that will take a flyer on him. The question is, will they reach and take him too early?

I'm dieing here. All the OSU fans are talking about is their new dynasty that just began, and with the way Urban's recruiting, coaching, and playing a weak schedule, there's no reason to doubt it.

He's set up for a Saban-esque run in the Big 10.

Our recruiting just took a big blow. Other than that, let the OSU fans enjoy destroying weak competition for a little bit. I'll side with Sparty and let them handle the Buckeyes.

Not necessarily. It hurts us in the state of Ohio, but we recruit nationally. I think seeing another Midwestern team win it all can help.

What about Austin Robertson(sp?) and Austin Mack from Indiana? Those are recruits in ND's back yard that should be ND leans, yet they are leaning Ohio State.

Not saying ND won't be able to recruit, but in my opinion, it will be much more difficult to get top talent to come to ND.

Congrats to OSU I guess. This was as "March Madness"'y a team as ever. Let's not forget, this is a team that:

Lost to an average VT team.
Minnesota took them to the wire.
I believe was down to Indiana in the 3rd quarter and their 3rd string quarterback (only to score a bunch late to make it look much worse than it was).
Played a close game against a bad Michigan team for 3 quarters before Devin be Devin.

This was not a dominant team against good competition for most of the year. It was a good team that turned it on late. If anything, I hope this helps open up the 8-team playoff.

Oh well. This should wear off in a week here in Ohio. Congrats to OSU, but screw these people.

C. Jones didn't play in the IU game.

It's so frustrating to watch this plan of play a weak schedule, improve every week, and make a statement at the end of the season while ND continues to schedule too many good to very good teams and lose a couple of games and not have a shot at a title. UGH...

And, this will not wear off for a while. The OSU fans will be insufferable until a new champion is crowned.

To be fair, that's not their plan. They play in the B1G, which isn't their fault. And, as bad as Va Tech is this year, they are generally a very good team. They also scheduled Notre Dame for an upcoming series.

Bull****! Weis went into Southern California, in the middle of Sneaky Pete's great run at USC and pulled some of the most heavily recruited kids in the area (Clausen, Crist), and he also pulled Teo away from the Trojans. So ND doesn't have to concede the best talent in Ohio, the Midwest, or anywhere else, to Meyer or Harbaugh.
