Within the past year and a half I have witnessed a 6 month old child (nephew) go from having a very rare form of cancer to absolute tumor free. THANK THE LORD!!

I have always wondered about this thing we all call cancer and this has affected me and my family in ways that are utterly .... well, I'm sure if ya know, you know.

Which brings me to the question. Are we in charge? has anyone else had these thoughts?
They say that the different forms of cancer are a decaying.. Tell me how a newborn becomes inflicted?

I'm sure this type of childhood thing is not new, but it does seem to be happening more often.

I'm exhilarated that this abstraction is humble! Just worry about the origin.

I just can't get past this negative start and positive end. Which in all brings me to the question. Are we in charge? has anyone else had these thoughts? I know you know this, but cancer is a mutation that takes place in the nucleus of the cell.

Many things can cause this mutation: ionizing radiation, chemicals, etc.

As the world becomes more and more jam packed with radiation that can either be taken internally be it ingested, inhaled, or absorbed and also taken in through dose.

Think Fukushima, Hiroshima, and Pripyat (Chernobyl.) Our world probably has 1000x if not more than the background (that is continuously present) radiation present in the 1940s, and I'm certain it's increasing daily.

Or as we bathe, breathe, and eat chemicals, the incidence of cancer will unfortunately increase. Think polychlorinated biphenyls, asbestos, carbon tetrachloride, etc.. These substances used to be bathed in and used as insulators.

Therein lies the problem considering the cell-type and it's division rates. Also the chemistry of the organ in which the aforementioned settle.

In children or the womb, it's the worse case scenario: their youngs cells divide so so fast, that the potential for mutation upon exposure is multiplied by so much more than an adult... X-rays, ingestion by moms, etc expose the very sensitive cells and from there, it's out of control cell growth.

The decay occurs by adjacent cells "starving" for blood supply, and competing for nutrients. The rot then occurs. The growths impinge on nerves, blood vessels, and block other functions.

I am so glad to hear about the success of the child's ability to beat the affliction.

God bless y'all.

Yes indeed. and as I have researched I have found similar, yet far outstanding circumstances. The radiation we incur from a normal use of a phone for ex. 30 years ago they 'all' said it was from a cordless phone. I don't want to throw this into another type of thought but we all need to talk about it. It's effecting everyone of us. I have found solutions to many problems through reading on here. I hope to find more

Cell phones emit non ionizing radiation.

On the electromagnetic spectrum, they are more like microwave energy vs. an X-Ray or gamma ray.

I'm certain too much of a good thing is bad.

Perhaps another reason to talk on speaker away from the head or hands free nonetheless.

I'm not a believer in RF waves and cancer unless you surrounded yourself with high wattage or something.

Hamm radio users seem to be alright.

As a synthetic biologist, let me tell you, the world would be a FAR scarier place without GMOs. The name is meant to scare you, but even the phrase "GMO" is ambiguous. You know what's GMO? Corn. Broccoli. Cauliflower. Dogs. Cats. Before mankind ever knew what DNA was, we were using crude techniques like breeding to add the traits we liked and remove those we don't. Know where that leads? Messed up genetics all over the place. It's like using a hammer to reshape your car. Sure, you get the shape you want, but you add a ton of scratches and holes you never wanted. For that same reason, many wild genes in corn have been dropped over the years to cripple much of its natural functionality. It's far better to use genetic engineering to get what we want, where we know exactly what gets changed, exactly how it gets changed, and how to make sure exactly nothing else gets changed.

That's how we're going to survive the world growing to ten billion people and climate change, or even colonize other worlds---GMOs. If we go the entirely organic route, millions of people will starve to death as the human race grows.

In more than 1300 peer-reviewed studies (at least a third of which were independently funded) over the last 35 years, there has NEVER been a single study that showed a harmful effect associated with eating a GMO. The WHO, the FDA, the CDC, and the USDA are all aligned on the idea that there is exactly ZERO evidence GMO food is harmful.

I read something...a theory about how cancer is everywhere or basically in all of us and our body normally doesn't allow it to grow or take hold. The theory is that when we get certain viruses, the viruses cause a breakdown of our bodies defenses thus allowing the cancer to take hold. It seems to make sense to me, sorry if it's a lame explanation. I'll see if I can find what I was reading.

Pretty much this.

I'm sitting around with the WAG (getting a PhD in nutritional sciences) and she nodded her head in agreement with this post. There has never been any credible scientific research that GMOs are harmful.

Kinda like in The Walking Dead where everyone turns into a zombie when they die?

Sorta?

?? Not sure. I've never watched a zombie movie.

The idea is if we can identify those viruses we can create vaccines. We've never cured a virus just prevented them.

1). Cancer is a cell out of reproductive control --- i.e. its tendency to reproduce/multiply/replace is in "GO" mode without its genetic "STOP" signal regulators. Why doesn't it have this regulation? Because some assault on [or even deficiency of] its DNA regulatory genes has occurred and proper feedback controls are not working effectively or not at all. Thus the affected cell multiplies out of control and saps energy/nutrition from the rest of the body, and, if the resultant mass grows large enough, can even physically hinder function of vital organs.

2). Affecting single cells this way is sadly easy to do, and in fact [due to cosmic rays along with other chemical nasties etc] is happening in all of us all the time. We all have cancerous cells in our bodies all the time due to this. The reason that we all don't show manifestation of macroscopic dangerous cancers is that our immune systems usually recognize these rogue elements rapidly enough to beat them back and keep their influence microscopic, if at all. We have, therefore a cancer<> immune system war taking place all the time. Those of us with "good" immune systems and low "exposure" to cell-mutating impacts [whether radiation-based or chemically-based] win this war moment-to-moment and stay "cancer free". Those of us with compromised or defective immune systems, or who expose ourselves to too many mutagenic events, will lose the war and "get cancer".

3). As in all things biological, some members of any species will be luckier genetically than others. Some will have highly effective cancer detecting and killing immune systems, and some not. One however does not want a total Immunity Warrior-like system, as that sort of situation leads to hyperimmune activity and things like autoimmune diseases, some forms of diabetes, arthritis, even extreme allergy responses. Nature plays a balances game with this, and most of us are "in the middle" of the immune effectiveness Bell-shaped Curve. That is why the great majority of us will not get cancer, but only if we watch out not to get too much exposure. {my brother, from a completely cancer-free family, still got a rather bad skin cancer by not taking care with excess sunlight exposure, for instance}.

4). Breakdowns in the immune system can also be environmentally induced, the most elementary of which is the poor low-protein diet --- amino acids are needed in sufficient amount to make the sense-and-attack system's antibodies for instance --- so malnutrition enhances ability to "get cancer" among other things. Immune systems can apparently break down or get crippled when the systems are overloaded fighting other non-cancerous assaults. So being constantly sick is also going to increase your "disease" chances elsewhere.

5). As to cellphones et al: ionizing radiation does not seem to be the problem, if there is one. The problem seems to be the magnetic fields generated therein and held closely to areas of your brain. The jury's out on how dangerous this is, but the fact that the cellphone companies have lowered magnetic field intensities might give a hint as to whether there might be a problem here. Can you say "seizure"?

6). The genetic modification of organisms has been going on just about forever and is called things like "stock-breeding" or more fancily "artificial selection." This shifting of the genetic pool of a species to a more numerous "breed" in line with human desires is not in and of itself problematical. You're going to be eating protein, carbohydrate, fat etc either way, and your stomach and intestines will deal with that just fine. This is not the environmental issue. The issue is the consequent elimination of VARIETY within a species which always occurs when macrobusiness takes over. By definition, all organisms can get "sick", or have "predators", and be killed. The strength of Nature has been that Varieties of all things have simultaneously existed. If a predator or disease gets "too good", this variety will ensure that some significant percentage of the species will fight it off or escape it and survive. No variety vs a "good" disease = extinction and system disequilibrium. "Has such a thing ever happened?", says big agribusiness? Well yes, and it was a near-miss super-catastrophy. A GMO rice strain was being pushed by business and successfully took over Asian fields. A disease came on and systematically wiped the crop out. Food scientists scrambled wildly to try to find a resistant strain [i.e. variety] --- no luck. Finally some "unpopular" environmental preservationists found an existing strain cloistered away in a river valley in India --- a valley scheduled for inundation by a newly planned dam.

I suppose that's enough hell-raising by me for the night --- Old Man is going to bed.

Blame the business practice, not the science! I'm curious if this rice anecdote refers to Golden Rice, which I believe to be one of the inventions with the most potential to positively impact the world in this young century of ours.
