Wow. Can't believe we have a Juco kid in play. Big for the program going forward.

So, given an option of adding Jeremy Smith or Ronald Jones, who would you take? They appear to be very different types of backs and while Jeremy Smith would break the self imposed Juco "Ban" that ND has lived with, Jones seems to be one hell of a prospect. We could use a thumper back as a change of pace to the Bryant/Folston combo

Tough call IMO, but if I had to pick one I'd probably take Jones for his shiftiness. That said, Smith is something we don't really have on the roster, and his highlight reel is all him going against older and probably more physical players than Jones sees in HS.

Although he's in his freshman year of college, word is that the 6-2, 225-pounder would be eligible to transfer to Notre Dame and play this upcoming season for the Irish.

Fresno City College running back Jeremy Smith was set to play for Southeastern Louisiana this season, but it obviously never happened.

Like at many universities, opportunities arise for coaches and that was the case with former Lions recruiting coordinator E.K. Franks, who accepted the same position at Arkansas.

Smith decided he didn't want to go to Southeastern Louisiana, the only school to offer him a scholarship. So he left before practice started this past summer.

He visited Louisiana State but no offer was made with the Tigers having already brought in freshmen running backs Leonard Fournette, the nation's top overall prospect, and Darrell Williams.

Southeastern Louisiana's loss was Fresno City College's gain as Smith's father, Craig Williams, found the school on his home computer and researched the Rams before he picked the school over other JCs in Mississippi and Arizona.

"I stumbled on coach Tony (Caviglia) and Fresno City," Williams said. "I looked at the great things they're doing over there ... having kids graduate and moving on to other schools and to advance in their career.

"What impressed me with coach Tony is the high percentage of guys that graduate. That's what impressed me the most. When I talked to him ... his character and being honest. ... It's a better fit for my son."

Smith is majoring in engineering and carries a GPA of at least 3.0 or better since high school.

Smith's goal now is to help the Rams win games and come out with a "big-time offer."

Smith played high school football at Hammond High Magnet School and had a career game when he had a 31 carries for 447 yards and seven touchdowns against Pearl River High as a junior in 2012. By the way, his Hammond team defeated Pearl River 55-28 after trailing 28-27 at halftime.

Smith's touchdown runs covered 63 (twice), 57 yards, 45, 25, 11 and 1 yards.

"It was the best game I ever had," said the 6-foot-2, 225 pound Hammond native. "I just went out there and played, got the win and that's all was on my mind at the time."

That is the attitude Caviglia likes as he welcomed the running back to the team.

"I like big backs here and watching him on film out of high school he was able to do some things that we like our backs to be able to do," Caviglia said. "He runs with power and he also posses great speed."

For the season, Smith has 59 carries for 418 yards and six touchdowns and earned his first start against Reedley, but Caviglia doesn't plan "to wear him out" because he uses a running back by committee.

That's fine by Smith.

"Running back coach (Jesus Reyes) is like the most helpful person on and off the field, making sure we know that grades are first and ball will work itself out," Smith said. "On the field, we take our time as a running back group and why we do things and how we should do it."

This is clearly something new to Irish fans so we don't know how to take the idea of a JUCO transfer.

Truth is you shouldn't be comparing Jeremy with someone from this class because he won't count against this class. Who you should be comparing him to is Elijah Hood. So would you rather have Jeremy Smith or still not have Elijah Hood?

I posted this in another thread, so I may be beating a dead horse, but you need a "BIG" back in a spread offense. It has been clear all year that we need a bigger type of back. When need to punch the ball in or need a tough couple of yards it is a blessing to have a thumper in there. I'm not going as far to say ND's record would've been all that different, but the playbook and play calls definitely near the goal line open up a little more.

The question I posed was to have posters consider which you'd prefer as the staff likely only takes 1. Hood isn't an option but Jones and Smith are. If the staff is willing to take both and both want in, I'm good w that.

Well but why wouldn't they take both? They are in entirely different classes.

FWIW, Loy posted on the BGI board that we'd take Smith and 2 Rb's in this class.

I didn't think they'd take 2 in addition to Adams. If he (Adams) is to be redeployed to another position, well that's fine as well.

Not saying he isn't worth taking but I think I would rather have Jones and see if you could get JUCO DE or S to help out.

The depth chart would be as follows

Jr. Folston
Soph. Bryant/Smith
Fr. Jones/Adams

I don't think thats overkill. However, what else we have to take into account is what would Jones think of this. Jones has told Loy that he wouldn't want to be in a 3 rb class. It wouldn't be a 3 back class but he'd be competing with 2 other RB's for reps.

So........ Keep in mind that this isn't a open the flood gates for JUCO's situation. This is very similar to Riggs in that its a special situation at the moment.

Lol, "or still not have Hood"... Beau you clever guy you.

As others have said no need to worry, we would gladly take both Jones and Smith.

Where it would get real sticky is if Jones and Jamabo both wanted in. But I'm 99% sure we won't have to worry about that.

Not likely. For the most part, JUCO's don't have the grades to make it. Even if they get their grades up in JUCO they may not have the credits to transfer. I remember a buddy telling me how one of the coaches had to basically walk Jason Pierre-Paul to class every day just to make sure he went. That type of kid doesn't fit with ND, so this kid must be a special exception.

Wiltfong and Loy CBed him to ND. Given his enrollment timeline, this is probably a banquet commitment right?
