I'm curious what will happen with Schmidt next year with the LBs. Going to be tough to take Morgan off the field if he plays well to end the season.

Jaylon-Morgan-Tranquill sounds amazing. But then we've also got Schmidt, Onwualu, and Martini. Great depth, either way.

I was surprised when BK said you can count on Schmidt being back for a 5th year immediately following the injury. I would have let it play out before I made a statement like that.

Agreed. I love Schmidt, but he could prove to be very replaceable and we could be facing a numbers crunch.

The coaches must love him even more than the fans.

Probably a reward for what he's been able to do as a walk-on.

Nope. It's because he's a legitimate starter, a productive player and will clearly have a role on next years team.[/QUOTE]

Agree with that. I hope we're not handing him a scholarship without a plan. 5th years shouldn't be for charity. Barring Morgan having something stupid happen, I highly doubt Schmidt will ever be a starter again, though.

Even if he sits behind Morgan for the entirety of 2015, bringing him back is a no-brainer. He offers experienced depth at a position where we're still thin, and he's a great mentor in the locker room, film room, and on the sideline. The odds of the staff signing a recruit who will contribute more than that in 2015-- a year in which we'll likely make a serious playoff run-- as a freshman is negligible.

I agree he's a legitimate starter. What I meant as "a reward" Whiskey expounded upon.

This was mentioned in the USC thread, but it should be posted here as well: Tranquill played the entire 2nd half against UL on a torn ACL. The kid's a badas$.

And while he hasn't looked great as a true safety recently, he looked damned good as an "in-box" safety earlier this year. If he makes a full recovery, he's going to play a lot of good football for us.

I think it might be best for him to sit out next year, red shirt, and be fully recovered for spring practice 2016.
