Apparently also took a visit to ND for the Stanford game.

I've noticed that as well (multiple visits), do we have a pretty good shot here? Location seems to be in our favor if he wants to stay close to home. Still haven't watched any if his film either, anything stand out?

Corey is from the same county (Berrien) as Jhonny Williams, but St. Joseph is twice as big and has more money (resort town). Berrien Springs and St. Joe's play in different conferences, but I cannot imagine the competition is much different. There's certainly no powerhouses in that part of Michigan.

St. Joe is a much bigger school. Class A (that is the largest size in michigan). I want to say Berrien springs is a class c. I know they have "divisions" in football in Michigan, but you get the point. There is some good competition in the league he plays with.

St. Joseph Bears Football - SMAC Conference Standings

Michigan High School Football Rankings - MaxPreps

I would concede that the competition is certainly better than who Berrien Springs plays. Looking at the teams they play in conference, though, no one truly stands out to me. Granted, I probably have a bias towards schools in the Grand Rapids/Muskegon area (I went to GR West Catholic).

yeah the St. Joe/Benton Harbor divide is something very distinctly American to me. You wouldn't see two cities of such different wealth divided like that over here. I would guess St Joe is 99% white and Benton 85% black. Two totally different cities seperated by a bridge.

I agree that muskegon/grand Rapids area is better. I was just pointing out that the conference he plays in much better than Berrien springs.

They call it "the world's longest bridge."

Lock the doors and don't stop.

This past summer my sister in law got married there at the Blue Dress Barn there out near Watervliet. Beautiful vineyards and fields out there, really nice part of the Mitt.

Born and raised here in Southwest MI. Graduated from Watervliet. You guys are spot on with the difference between St Joe and Benton Harbor. St Joe is the full of the rich, snobby types and a very nice town and beach and Benton Harbor couldn't be anymore of your stereotypical "ghetto", riddled with crime.

As far as Hatcher...I'm hoping to get out to a game or two of his this year or next. He plays his home games about 15 minutes from my house. Cool to see local talent being recruited by ND. Between him and Jhonny Williams, I'm pretty surprised. Not that they aren't good...just not used to seeing kids from around here going to D1 schools for athletics...especially the caliber of ND.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p>Today's <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/Michigan?src=hash">#Michigan</a> offer was an emotional one for Corey Malone-Hatcher and his family: <a href="http://t.co/xTePB4JdCh">http://t.co/xTePB4JdCh</a></p>— Allen Trieu (@AllenTrieu) <a href="https://twitter.com/AllenTrieu/status/532358291599687681">November 12, 2014</a></blockquote>

That Corey Malone-Hatcher (6-3, 230 pounds) has three Big Ten offers after only playing a handful of games as a sophomore, is an indication of what colleges think of the St. Joseph defensive end's potential.
Today, his most recent offer came, one from in-state Michigan, joining Ohio State and Penn State.
He called director of player personnel Chris Singletary in the afternoon, and he says, after some small talk, he received the big news.
"He said 'hold on a second, I have someone who has been wanting to talk to you.' I waited a few seconds and Coach Hoke picked up the phone. I was surprised he would take the time to talk to me during the day, so I got kind of excited. He told me they'd been watching my tape all morning and their final evaluation was that he could tell I've developed where I needed to athletically, and I have the work ethic and also have my academics where I need them to be, and they couldn't find a reason why I shouldn't be a Wolverine and told me I had an offer from Michigan.
"I couldn't believe it at first. It was surreal. He told me that felt I was one of the top talents in the country and they'll look forward to recruiting me."
It was an emotional moment for his family, particularly his mother, who happened to be with him at the time.
"It's really reassuring. They've been keeping up with me for a couple years, so to get the offer from them was great. My whole family was ecstatic. My mom, after I talked to them, she was tearing up. She was crying. It really carries a lot of weight."
Malone-Hatcher camped at Michigan and has been to several games, but plans to be back again.
"Oh yeah, definitely. We will probably try to make the Maryland game and if something come up and unable to make it, find another way to get up on campus at some point."
He is scheduled to visit Alabama this weekend.

While his competition is pretty marginal, as Peppermint Nightmare said, it's a lot better than Berrien Springs. By a large margin in fact. The competition isn't great on national standards, but St Joe has good coaching, excellent facilities and is an academic fit to Notre Dame.

I hope we have a monster year this year and scUM poops the bed. If so, we are the hometown school with him living 30something minutes away from campus. Hopefully that would give us a shot.
