I would keep Welch for sure, this time last we were all like ah just let Fox or Carlo go we wont need them..

I think Smythe will be ready to play next year though, and we didn't have an option like that at ILB last year. If Welch is ready to play, healthy and willing, then keep him. Otherwise, let him find the playing time he wants at another school and bring on the next generation.

I think Welch is worth it. When Eifert was here the coaches said he had the softest, maybe the best hands on the team. And he can block. He has just never been healthy.

Recorded his first career touchdown reception yesterday on a 2 yard pass from Hendrix in the loss to Marshall.

Welch - John Mackey Tight End of the Week

Alex Welch, a member of the Miami University football team has been named the John Mackey Tight End of the Week following his efforts versus UMass last Saturday afternoon. The announcement was made by the John Mackey Award on Wednesday, October 8.

Welch finished the game with five receptions for 63 yards (both career-bests), helping the RedHawks erase a 41-14 deficit versus the Minutemen and a 21-game losing streak. Four of his five catches resulted in first downs and was part of an offensive unit that allowed just one sack in 58 pass attempts.

The fifth-year senior is third on the team with 17 receptions for 218 yards and two touchdowns this season. Welch entered the year with just one catch in 22 career games at Notre Dame.

The 2014 John Mackey recipient will be announced on December 10, 2014 and presented live on December 11, 2014 at The Home Depot College Football Awards Red Carpet Show on ESPNU. Other key dates include the announcement of the Midseason Watch List on October 13, 2014, the Mackey Semi-finalists on November 17, 2014 and the Mackey Finalists on November 24, 2014. All future announcements can be found at www.johnmackeyaward.com.

The John Mackey Tight End of the Week is an honor distinct and different from the annual John Mackey Award. This weekly honor was started in 2004 to draw attention to individual play by tight ends during the active season. The Tight End of the Week acknowledgment does not have a direct bearing on the final John Mackey Award selection process.

The John Mackey Award is a member of the National College Football Awards Association (NCFAA) which encompasses the most prestigious awards in college football. The 21 awards boast 678 years of tradition-selection excellence. Visit National College Football Awards Association to learn more about our story.

Awesome, good for him.

And yet, in hindsight, I feel like he should have stayed at ND. He would absolutely be playing this year for us. He would give us more flexibility to play two TEs and could really boost the run game. Koyack, his game-winning catch on Saturday notwithstanding, has hardly seized the job ... he is playing as much as he is mostly because we don't have another TE who is both physically and mentally ready to be a bigtime college football TE. I can't help but feel that Welch would have been able to rotate in with some regularity.

That catch on a ball that should have been intercepted. Hendrix was brutal last night in the part of the game I watched. Although jacked (based on his own pr campaign), he just isn't very good.

Welch should have been invited back for 5th year. Could have really used him to free up Koyack this year.

I'm not sure if he wasn't invited back, because the coaches thought Niklas was staying.

He was invited back, and Kelly encouraged him to stay. He chose to go to Miami, presumably because he wanted more playing time. I'm not sure if Niklas had made his decision yet.

Alex decided to transfer in Dec 2013 and Troy decided to enter the draft in Jan 2014.

you could argue too Lo Wood might have seen playing time this year had he stayed.

Yeah, with the change in system, I think he would have. Butler was ahead of him because he is more of a lanky, Diaco-style zone corner, but I think Lo would have thrived under BVG.

I'm not sure about that. I think Wood would have been behind Butler regardless.
