Has ND ever had back-to-back shutouts before? It could very easily happen next week....

One week does not translate to the next, necessarily. We are getting ahead of ourselves, this is still a young defense. There will be mistakes, last night everything worked in our favor, we want always have that.

A lot of times but its gotten tougher in recent decades with more open passing games, kicking rule changes, scholarship reductions, and tougher schedules.

Rockne 1920, 21, 22, 23, 24 25, 26. The '26 team threw 6 in a row vs PSU, NW, GT, IU, Army, and Drake. They also shutout Beloit in the opener for 7 in a 10 game season allowing a total of 38 pts.

Anderson 31 Two strings of 3 allowing 40 pts in 9 games. In 32 he had two more strings of shutouts allowing 31 pts. In 33 he only had 2 shutouts and a whopping 80 pts. He was fired.

Layden in 34, 37, 38, and 40 (3 in a row).

Leahy 41, 42 Twice, 43, '46 Team threw 4 in a row, Navy, Army, Northwestern, and Tulane and also shut out Pitt. They only allowed 24 pts in 9 games. No opponent scored more than 6 pts in a game. 47 (3 in a row),

McKeever 44 (2 in a row and 3 in a row)

Brennan 55 (3 in a row), 57

Parshegian 66 (3 in a row), and 3 of last 4 games allowing 38 pts for the season, 69, 70, 71.

Devine 76

I would have lost that bet, Holtz had some poor defenses, but, that run from 88-90 they were just dominate on D... I'd have guessed they threw two in a row there.

Oh I realize that. And I dont wanna put the cart in front of the horse(does anyone use that term anymore?)...however Purdue got wrecked yesterday and we beat an upper echelon BIG team like a drum.Just sayin.

Shutting a team out is very difficult, even more so if the other team sucks and gets blown out. It is really hard to match shutout level intensity sitting on a 20 point lead, not to mention your pups are on the field.

*On a side note: the last 2 Purdue games have taught me to be cautiously optimistic. Under no circumstance do I see a loss, but the way everyone is riding high, this weekend could be a 27-21 rock fight hurling us back to earth.

The competition was much tougher in the '88-'90 run. Holtz played 14 ranked teams in 3 seasons and no FSC or lower like Rockne through Layden. Parshegian only played 27 ranked teams in his 11 years.

Holtz had only 1 shutout in '88-'90 with two games allowing only a FG and four games only a TD. His best run was in '89 Pitt 45-7, Navy 41-0, and SMU 59-6.
