Read that Kelly wanted him back and solid against SC. Against ASU they had some stunts and four man alignments and spent less time in our base defense.

Kelly said Day was in one play for ASU, I didn't see it but my know it all friend did.

#5 in mel kipers top 5 underclassmen DE
5D. Sheldon Day, Notre Dame Fighting Irish: Day is a sleeper here, as he'll be playing a bigger role after the departure of guys such as Stephon Tuitt and Louis Nix III. Day is a very good athlete at 290 pounds, and is a likely fit on a 3-4 line.

All the way down at "5D" on the underclassmen list is Irish junior Sheldon Day, a player who has generated plenty of buzz after consecutive strong campaigns in South Bend, Ind.

Kiper admits this is a bit of a sleeper pick so early, but he, like many, projects big things for Day this season, as the Indianapolis native is the best of Notre Dame's returning linemen and won't be overshadowed by recent draft picks Stephon Tuitt and Louis Nix. Kiper sees the 290-pound Day as an ideal fit for a 3-4 scheme at the pro level.

Brian Kelly has expressed similar optimism about Day, telling FoxSports.com's Bruce Feldman last month that Day could be Notre Dame's best pass rusher even while playing inside. That versatility will undoubtedly help Day impress NFL personnel, but the Irish are in no rush to lose him before 2016.

An ideal fit for a 3-4 scheme? He is clearly better suited for a 43 system as a Three technique. He can be productive also in a 34 because he is really good but is not his natural position.

Wouldn't be unheard of but that's crazy if true.

This can't be true. Otherwise, wouldn't we have already heard about it like with Romeo. Sheldon was an EE we would have heard something about Day being 16 but in college classes.

Turns 18 today.

That's not right..

He was in the same recruiting class as Okwara, who was ahead one grade. Okwara enrolled at ND as a 16 year old (turned 17 shortly after) and is turning 19 before the season.

Day is older than Okwara.

Was that a picture of Sheldon taken after he kicked the live (Pitt) ball out of bounds?

I always felt Sheldon's frustration at last year not quite coming together. Hopefully, this year will be different!

Brilliant interview. If this is indicative of the team leadership and attitude, it is going to be a good year! Go Irish!

IMO he may be our most important player this year. I know Keith Arnold is doing his top 25 player countdown and I would put Sheldon as #1. If we lose him to injury, we have lots of unproven players behind him. If he is what he's supposed to be it will set the tone for the whole defense and help make it successful.

One could make a decent case for that. DL is our most unsettled unit, and Day is the only proven commodity on it.

The guys at II said that Sheldon was making it pretty tough for Hegarty to look good the other day.

Who would you rather have on the field?

Jaylon or Day? my pick Jaylon
Russell or Day? my pick Day
Stanley or Day?my pick Day, but close
Golson or Day?my pick Golson
Koyack or Day?my pick Day

who would be tougher to replace?

If we're treating every position as equally important, this is basically an exercise in picking where the drop in quality from #1 to #2 is largest.

Jaylon is a safe pick, simply because he's a freakishly athletic superstar. Even though our #2 WLB is probably much better than some other #2s, the gap between that guy (whoever it ends up being) and Jaylon is still huge.

Koyack is defensible, because he's a senior and Smythe is a RS Freshman. Though Koyack's limited production to date makes this a more tenuous pick.

I'd still have to go with Day overall. The 3-tech is crucial to BvG's scheme, and we don't have anyone else on the roster who can reliably penetrate on the inside. Here's praying for Day's first injury-free season.
