With all the nationalist fervor he's been cultivating, that might even be worse. You'd have Russia whipped into a fervor, a likely power struggle and a massive arsenal of weaponry that may or may not remain loyal to the Kremlin.

Looking at a map, there aren't a lot of great routes from Amsterdam to SE Asia, and they were supposed to be above the no fly zone by a few thousand feet.

Still, it was risky, and there's a reason US carriers had discontinued that route.

So the U.S. is already saying it was the rebels...but we still need to investigate the attack/crash?

Recovering bodies and property isn't really "investigating" though, is it? It's aftermath aid and assistance.

I'd think proof the plane was shot down, and in some manner, the specifics of how would already be known if your intelligence is already confirming it was done by a specific group of people.

Specifically speaking, I don't find anything wrong with Obama's statement, nor the stance by U.S. intelligence. It's the 2 of them together that don't seem to mesh to me.

In reality, there's little the US can do. It's up to the international community to come together and rain down. But, while you'll hear bits in the news, most REAL stuff will happen quietly and behind closes doors.

Sanctions virtually never bring about desired changes in the behavior of foreign governments anyway. They hurt the poor and middle class in the target countries (because those are the people who lack the resources the insulate themselves from such things), thereby making America a useful political foil for the regime we were trying to chastise in the first place. Have our long-standing sanctions against Iran or Cuba achieved their desired effects over the last several decades?

I read similar reports from other sources this morning; that the BUK system at issue here was originally Ukrainian hardware, but was captured by the separatists or Russians.

MOSCOW (AP) -- A top pro-Russia rebel commander in eastern Ukraine has given a bizarre version of events surrounding the Malaysian jetliner crash - suggesting many of the victims may have died days before the plane took off.

The pro-rebel website Russkaya Vesna on Friday quoted Igor Girkin as saying he was told by people at the crash site that "a significant number of the bodies weren't fresh," adding that he was told they were drained of blood and reeked of decomposition.
