Take White and Reid and close up DB recruiting for the year and I'll be happy. Of course Iman would be a take, but we'll cross that bridge of thought if he visits.

Potentially

Crawford
Reid
White
Coleman
Fertitta
McKinney

That's an amazing haul of football players. Athletic, hard hitting, and fast kids. It builds depth and has star power. I would say this is my ideal scenario in the back end.

Haven't watched his film, but per people who would know he's supposedly very good and underrated. VT knows their DBs and signed him up early for a reason. Was offered immediately by Ohio State after camping there.

Yes, VT does an amazing job at the position. Last year was another great exams of that with their FR starting and starring.

Note, we've been hearing this but Steve hare reiterated that we are only taking 3 DB's as of right now and Ashton would be the 3rd. So, Reid and Ross would be out.

I believe Reid will be a take regardless of what Ashton does

If we take this guy, is Reid even a take?

Or more importantly, will he want to join a croweded DB class?

We'd have Crawford, Feritta, McKinney, Coleman, White.

That's a ton.

I'd rather have Reid.

Purely FWIW, supposedly Cooks told Tranquill ND is taking 2-3 more DBs this class.

I'm sure Reid is a take, but IDK why he'd want to join a class with 5 DBs.

And on that note, IDK how hard the staff would push for him when the class is full. IDK. I'd prefer they hold out for Reid, but if they don't like their position with him and/or waiting on him, I guess it is what it is.

If Coleman and Fertitta are the reasons we dont get Reid, I'll be pretty disappointed. Im not crazy about either prospect. I honestly dont care to take a few 3* guys with high ceilings. I dont think either player has a high ceiling. Therefore Im not thrilled about loading up on "special teams studs."

Reid is a must get to go along with Crawford. That's a really solid CB haul.

Coach D had some great insight on this matter and he basically says most of the DB's we have recruited this year can play multiple positions such as corner or safety and possibly offense so I think Reid is a take and I don't picture him being worried about competing with fellow commits for playing time, I'm sure Reid knows it's going to be competitive at ND and PSU and I'm sure he is very aware of our depth chart and the great possibility of early playing time so I don't think by taking White you are losing Reid. I see it as a win-win for ND

Reid's film is just filthy smooth. Kind of like Crawford's. And his interview w/ Loy was one of the best I've seen.

Plus he has MSU offer.

I saw White's hudl film. Lots of tackling but not much film on coverage/athleticism (disclaimer, only watched 2/3 of it).

No, just my opinion on the manner. I think Crawford is a slot corner and the staff has option with Coleman so I still think they take Reid in the fall if he wants in.

DB's is one position that we've heard the staff feels comfortable overloading on this cycle so it would make sense. I really like Reid so I would hope we still take him but I'd be curious as to how the numbers look with 6 total DB's then.

We are extremely thin at db next year...

Hardy Farley Atkinson brown will be gone

Russell could bolt to the nfl....I doubt but possible..

6 is the number IMHO...

we will be thin at DB next year if the staff decides not to bring those guys back. I would say the aim is to bring in as many DB's as possible and if they dont get as many as they want then they will look at giving 5th years to the likes of Hardy, Farley etc.

Yea I think this is starting to show what has been talked about a little already. We aren't going to be asking back some 5th years that we may have in the past. It looks like the staff BVG wants new blood in the DB/S category.

yeah you can tell with the likes of Jalen Brown and Eilar Hardy they are big guys and thats fine when you play a lot of zone but they simply aren't flexible enough to warrant keeping around. Better to bring in a young guy who can play CB/SB/S or even some WR for you.

I think Coleman and White are both athletic enough that they can play multiple positions if needed, as others have said, but are also fluid enough that they could be successful at CB. I am probably higher on White and Coleman than most (I honestly like both at CB better than Devin Butler, who I also liked more as a zone corner or safety).

I think if we pick up White we still go after one DB, hopefully Reid.

Just found this from a couple days ago, forum post by CoachD, emphasis mine:

I had a chance to watch Ashton White last night. To be honest, I had never heard of him before yesterday when Christian wrote that he was camping at ND.

Here are my thoughts on him:

First of all, I tend to look at what particular coaches offer a kid. I'm not a huge cohort guy, meaning that every kid FSU offers isn't a guy that I assume is a great player or can play at ND. I do, however, put a lot of value on certain coaches. For example, if Bud Foster thinks a Mid-Atlantic kid can play DB for him, I take notice. This kid was once a VT commit and still, I believe, has a standing offer from VT. That says something to me. Chris Ash, the new DC at Ohio State, has produced some under the radar DB's in the last. He has offered this kid. Those two offers made me take notice, especially the offer from Virginia Tech.

Now, as to what I think about White. First of all, I like his size. He's probably about 5-11, which is enough length to play corner for sure. He's about 175-180 right now but is built strong and has a frame to get to 190+. One of the first things I saw was that he is a strong player and a willing tackler. That alone makes me like this kid as a prospect. If he can't stick at corner for whatever reason, he has the length, potential girth and ability/willingness to tackle to play safety. I love position versatility, as you all know.

He's a pretty good athlete. He has quick feet and good top end speed. He timed at a 4.2 in the shuttle, which is good. It's not blazing quick, but it is quick and it shows up on film. He does a great job of planting and driving downhill with tremendous quickness and speed. There is little wasted motion in this movement. Again, this is more of a safety type of ability here as opposed to a cornerback. As a corner he showed good quickness in his pedal and good instincts. He reads routes well and does a nice job finding the ball in the air, at least on the clips I saw. He does a real nice job mirroring on deep routes. At times he doesn't look like he hasn't the cleanest hip turn, but it's not something that will necessarily keep him from being a corner. It just keeps him from being an elite guy when it comes to opening and running. He does show good game speed (I have no clue what his timed speeds are), which allows him to recover in the few instances where a WR did get a step on him on a vertical route.

Overall I really like this kid. To me he's a 4 star football player. He's versatile, he has toughness, he's from a tough region (in regards to playing quality opponents) and he is reportedly an outstanding student. If he shows up well at camp and the ND coaches decide to offer him I'd be perfectly happy.

This is a really, really deep year at cornerback, nationally. ND needs to take advantage and bring in as many as possible. Guys like Crawford, Coleman, Ykili Ross and now White have great versatility. That means some can play on offense (Crawford, Ross, Coleman), some could play safety (White, Crawford, Ross) and all of course have a chance to be good corners. So if you got Crawford, Coleman, White and one more player (Ross, John Reid, Mook Reynolds, etc) you wouldn't necessarily be loading up with 4 pure corners. That's a plus.

My two cents.

Basically seems to imply he lacks some elite physical traits, but is a good versatile athlete that could play CB or Safety and is highly regarded by coaches that would know. Is he a better option than a Justin Hilliard? Maybe. That's what you're really talking about here. I don't think he has any impact on Reid's spot.

Also, ISD did an "in the film room" on him a week ago when there was buzz he'd be camping and trying to earn an offer. They talk about how he's a well-rounded and versatile prospect and grade him out as a 4-star player.

Ran a 4.43 and 4.2 shuttle (allegedly, haven't seen confirmation) at a Nike combine measuring in at 5'11" 175. However, it's important to remember that Josh Atkinson tests off the charts for size/speed and has made relatively no impact at ND so by no means does his athletic measurement guarantee production.
