The reason there was nothing to the allegations is because they were never actually investigated. I thought that was pretty much common knowledge.

Anyone see the story on Deadspin about the woman who was shot and raped by an FSU player in the 90s? And Bobby Bowden wrote him a character reference letter to get him a lesser sentence?

I never saw it, and I do not know if anyone will ever know the truth behind it. It would not totally surprise me though. Any clue as to the identity of the alleged rapist?

Honestly, I'm worried I had the wrong take on this case. Every report from "sources" people trust seemed to apply that there was nothing to the allegations. Recent information is quite troubling.

And hey, I did not mean to sound like an ahole. It just seems pretty commonplace that sexual assaults are generally swept under the rug, especially at football factories like Nebraska when they won 3 titles in 4 years, all the way toward today. In fact, you have to be damn tough just to bring the charges up because generally nobody ever believes you.

Especially now, in the wake of the Duke Lax case where the stripper's case was so shoddy that most women would have to be pretty damn certain that their case was almost ironclad to bring up, especially at a football power.

To think that there was that much smoke and NO fire is entirely unbelievable, so of course, they just swept it up under the rug while trampling on the girl's credibility and life for over a year....and she STILL wanted to pursue the case, which tells me there is a LOT more to this case.

Whether it is actually truly investigated or not, I am not sure, but if I were a betting man, I would say no.

IF the victim has a very smart, very tough, fearless, and relentless lawyer - it won't be good for Winston. It won't be good for FSU.

It already looks bad for FSU. Whether or not it affects Winston, I have no idea. But with the football culture there, I have my doubts that Winston suffers any repercussions for this.

The woman on the other hand is going to be dragged through the mud and tried to be painted as something that she is not.

Very sad state of affairs when you consider the Lewan and Winston cases, in which a woman was sexually assaulted and then the football program tried to cover it up. And Michigan did it for a kicker. Imagine how much more tenacious FSU will be in protecting Winston.

As a sidenote, I have no idea what the OCR can do to Winston, but if he is found guilty of violating the student code of conduct, I don't think that affects anything, as far as the national title FSU won, does it? Would the NCAA declare Winston ineligible and the title vacated?

I doubt anything happens to Winston. This is water under the bridge for fsu supporters, at this point. They've got their NC and Heisman and that's all that matters. Any sliver of doubt in the investigation (which the TPD and fsu made sure there was) let their boy off the hook completely as far as they're concerned. Hammering Winston now would make him more a of a martyr in their eyes than he already is.

TPD might be in trouble, but we'll see how far the Feds get. I really doubt it.

I refused to sign papers for my daughter to attend FSU. Wonder if anyone else will?

My father must have done something similar about my sister's desire to go to Bama.

So of course, she went to Auburn and now lives in Tuscaloosa. Weird how that works.

What's that chick's name...Gloria Aldridge? She haunts houses in her spare time but would good for the victim to hook up with her.

I could not care less about any of this... if he is guilty he needs to pay, soon... if he is not I feel bad for him... how it impacts FSU's team, or supporters couldn't matter any less imo...

I will not sign the papers because of the school, per se. It is specifically because of the ongoing way they handle sexual assault cases. This unfortunately, is not the exception, from what I have found.

One would hope...

While I agree that he needs to pay for his crime if he is guilty, if the police or school (including football team) had a hand in not investigating this correctly due to his status as a football player then I hope they get the hammered dropped on them as well so that this doesn't happen again. I could care about the national championship or Heisman but any individual and or group that would obstruct justice should be punished to the fullest extent of the law as well.

Bama apparently had a campus-wide drug problem, or at least that was the rumor, when my sister was considering attending there.

Considering the fact that SAE had its chapter charter revoked because of widespread drug use within the house (the original fraternity chapter, no less), I would to say it was at least partially true.

If parents want to keep their kids safe, they need to vote with their dollars. Because, little else counts. Unfortunately.

I watched a special last night about the environmental movement in the US, and how it grew out of the anti-war movement. Bunch of left wingers right? One of the first major US catastrophe that raised American citizen's awareness was the Love Canal. It was an old "trench" that was filled in to build a neighborhood. First Hooker Chemical buried 20,000 tons of poisonous waste. You can find a list of what it was on the internet. The point is one mom with a sick kid wanted her son (a kindergarten student) transferred out of the new elementary school built right on top. The principle and school board declined. She went door to door with petitions, thinking others might be affected. She found 56 per cent of the children from the area were born with birth defects. 56 per cent!

After this a government and industry task force investigating the site announced their conclusions. Yes there were 20,000 tons of poison buried, but the defects were a non-related cluster of genetically deficient people who randomly came together in the area. Now most of these people were poor and African-American, so it is not hard to see that not only was their an attempt to avoid any responsibility for their actions, but there was a classist and racist attempt to blame it on those people heretofore considered unable to defend themselves. The furor that the American public responded to this announcement was incredible. Real investigations were conducted, those responsible were held accountable, and a movement grew out of nothing.

The point is, people lie. People in charge lie just as much as those not in charge. So if there is no resource to check them, we get sold a bill of good. The press used to be one of the best sources to check the liars, but what we called news media has now become entertainment. It is worthless. Same exact thing that you all complain about in recruiting threads. When those reporting lie as much as those criminals or non-criminals they are reporting about, then you have to be pretty diligent about what really happened.

The Winston case is tough because it is now clear even those we pay to keep us safe have lied, or at least not done their job. This is my problem with my daughter attending FSU and or living in Tallahassee, Florida. The school, city, and state officials I have seen speak on a number of cases in the last few years are less than impressive. And it just so happens I know someone who is a certified SANE nurse, who is coincidentally being paid big bucks to head to another Florida community to reorganize a hospital program at a community. So someone is figuring there need to be changes! It is better than being oblivious to it. That really works. And so it goes.

Oh, that is perfect. Just to give people an idea of Tallahassee life, there is nothing about this on the local newspaper or tv news websites. LOL

I'm telling you, it's institutional here.
