Whatever happened to the Big Ten commercial that shows all the coaches from the conference including JLS talking about how they will show respect before, during, and after the game...hahaha i laugh out loud at this

He's just gathering data for the lawsuit he files at the end of the year when they fire his classless, non-football coaching ass.

See what Oklahoma has started? Now, everytime a team loses they can point fingers at the refs and get attention. There is no place for this in football. Complaints about officiating need to remain private and dealt with in private.

I could go on and on about how pathetic this is. He showed no class in responding to the flag incident and continues to do the same in other situations.

I'm proud that we do not have a staff that acts this way.

trannon never should have stepped across the sidelines :naughty:
I would like to know if I was in smith's shoes that I would have something to turn the attention off myself too:onfire:

What was really "mismanaged" was the offensive play calling by the Spartans. They came about as close as you can to giving that game away on purpose.

Someone should tell Matt Trannon that if he puts his hands on a coach from the opposing team, on that team's sideline, he's going to get his ass kicking. Football law.

Still, how about the safeties start hitting guys in bounds after they've burned whatever corner not named Darrin Walls that gets trotted out there, yes?

Just my opinion, but when Duke hit Stanton, he was still INBOUNDS. After seeing it from different angles, it still appeared that there was no part of Stanton over the sideline. To me, he is fair game.

Whatever the case, that incident lit a fire under our ass and it was nice to see our boys JACKED.

From the media reports I've read, MSU is saying they did this becasue CW said he was slapped. Why does this matter? He didn't say that he was slapped by an MSU player. In fact, he said it may have been one of his own kids. Argue your case that your team did not deserve the penalty. But, this seems personal. JLS obviously dislikes ND and CW in particular.

I can see the point about trying to shift focus to another area to get out of the spotlight (for JLS). But....I don't know about you, but my Dad taught me to own up to my mistakes. Be a man and accept responsibility so that you can look yourself in the face each morning in the mirror.

The hit on Stanton was the exact same as the hit on QUinn against Georgia Tech, with the notable exception of the hit on Quinn being helmet to helmet.

In both cases, it was clear that the QB was going out of bounds. If the QB gets hit a foot from the sideline on his way out of bounds, it will be a penalty EVERY time. Really just a stupid play by Ndukwe.

I have no problem with that call.

one other thing,we need to take wies' philosophy...five minutes after that penalty, when they started bumping heads again, that call was history

This is the first post that agrees with me that Stanton WAS inbounds. I have watched that play a dozen times and he was NOT out of bounds when he was hit. As far as the contention that he INTENDED to go out of bounds and therefore should not have been hit, that is hogwash. No DB is expected to determine whether the QB intented to go anywhere. If he is still in bounds he is fair game and should be hit with all the intensity the DB can muster. That is football and everyone who plays is taught that.

If MSU had not gone across the ND line there would have been NO call against ND for that hit. Once MSU crossed the line the refs had to call the double foul to avoid a riot. IMO.

The ruling on the field was not that he was hit late, but rather it was unnecessary roughness since Stanton was heading out of bounds. This is similar to what Phillip Wheeler of GT did to Brady in our opener.

He should have just let him go out of bounds, however, I think the hit woke the squad up so I'll live with those kind of hits.

I believe the hit deserved a flag. Stanton was clearly trying to get out of bounds. I'm not saying Nduwke purposefully did it, but I agree with the call. Also, there was probably some jawing going on when Trannon was over there but I don't blame him either. Harris pretty much started it and Trannon was pushed for what looked like no reason. (not saying he didn't deserve it, just that he didn't do anything physical first) I do think this whole sending tapes to the Big 10 is complete B.S. though. Obviously, Weis said it could have been a Notre Dame player who hit him so it's a non-issue. Just John L Smith trying to shift the focus away from an absoultely awfully coached game.

ND Safeties, please start hitting people in bounds before they scorch you for yet another deep TD pass. Three years and still cheating up to the line for the run. It isn't getting you anywhere.

MSU, start acting like a Big Ten school instead of some piddly power puff squad. The class-o-meter is at about zero.

Jigg,

I remember reading somewhere (SI, maybe?) that Manningham said tape review of our D showed that our safeties cheated up, and that this opened opportunities for them to stretch the field.

Heaven knows UM figured that out.

I believe the hit deserved a flag. Stanton was clearly trying to get out of bounds.

Here's the flaw in that thinking: earlier in the game, there was another play where Stanton broke loose on a run and started a diagonal cut toward the sidelines to get out of bounds with a Notre Dame defender closing on him fast... and then about a yard from the line, Stanton stopped cold and then angled back in and away from the sideline. That move gave several other defenders the chance to converge on him, but it also helped Stanton pick up an extra 5 yards.

I seem to recall Vince Young doing the same thing against USC in the Rose Bowl last year, and I also remember Reggie Bush pulling a similar move at some point last year. Make the defender think you're gonna slink out of bounds, and then juke around him and cut back inside and make him pay for slacking off. Very smart play.

Never never never never never never NEVER assume that a QB who is running towards the sideline is going out of bounds. Any smart QB will take advantage of that assumption and burn you.

...not to mention that the late-hit rule makes no mention of a player who "intends" to go out of bounds anyway. If the player is still in-bounds when he's hit, the hit is perfectly legal, because the play is still live.

You'd be correct.

scUM knew exactly what they were doing and going to do. It showed.

I don't know if it is by design or if Zib and Duke have this habit, but we in the world of defensive backs would describe them as "nosey." By that, I mean they cheat to the run and creep up towards that line leaving their corners on an island.

Wooden, Richardson and Lambert aren't good enough to cover most guys one on one. And that Manningham is pretty damn good. Walls, McNeil, Gray...those guys project to go man on man down the road.

This problem has existed now for three years. I'd like to see the safeties in position to help their corners more.

Better linebacker play would allow the safeties to roam more freely.

That's what I couldn't understand ... Stanton was in bounds when hit, so why the late hit flag in the 1st place?? Also, I do think that Smith is nothing but a big a$$ baby anyway! No respect for that idiot! He's doing it so the MSU fans can point their whining to something other than his coaching abilities! The MSU downward spiral has begun for the year!!!

he did some whining just a little while ago in his press conference.some major whining about the call...looked like he was about to cry again, but that's just his facial expression(I'll give him that)

LOOK,the way I look at it is we did them a favor.Who's to say they didn't get a first down and get stopped for a field goal. The off setting penalties drove them to punt deep and then 2 plays later quinn throws an easy pick for a touchdown...just my opinion

I can see why our safeties cheat up this year. Our LB's don't get off blocks very well. Alot of times they are just getting blown completely out of the play. When the leading tacklers reside in your secondary, that is a major, major problem. Oh and about John Smith.........he blew the game and is trying to create what we would call a diversion. He's a loser. I didn't think much of that hit. He's fair game until that first foot touches the white line.

My feeling is that if the QB really wants to get out of bounds without getting hit, he can cut off his run at any point. If he's going to the most yards he can get and is in bounds...hit away. You don't know if he changes his mind, decides to stop and cut back or not. Then what....are the refs gonna call if back because he was "clearly headed out of bounds"?

Flag or no flag...I love to see our ND guys smash any opponent. I will never get TOO upset for aggressive penalties like this one. Stupid ones like holding, false starts, delay of game...they just can't happen. However, when a player makes an aggressive play and draws a flag, I can deal with that more than the dumb ones. I NEVER want to see one of our players hold back and the dude rips off another 10, 15, or more yards as a result. Stick 'em when you get the chance. It also sends a message to the other 10 guys back in their huddle that we're here to play.

You guys always think its the worst of the worst.

MSU sent the tape to prove that our players hadnt "slapped" Charlie in the face like he claimed.

Your coach started the whole thing by pulling on Trannon's jersey. I think when our starting QB is down for a second, our players are gonna go help him up. I dont know who that was, but he overreacted. Im sure he could have waited a sec for MSU players to get off the sidelines.

The MSU players should not have been back there. Your QB was safe.

Johnelle is making a bigger deal about the slap than Weis. In his presser he made no big deal about it. He joked that it could have been one of his own players.

Had Johnelle not whined about it in the media, it would have blown over.

whenever a dangerous scrambler like stanton is in bounds you should hit him. i know he was defiently going out of bounds, but theres still a small chance he could have cut it in. you should never give a player like that a chance to cut it up field.
