ESPN NCAAF Source: Arizona eyes Rich Rodriguez

Arizona is close to announcing it has hired former West Virginia and Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez, a source told ESPN's Joe Schad.

Arizona (3-8, 2-7 Pac-12) fired Mike Stoops last month after struggling to a 1-5 start.

Rodriguez coached Michigan from 2008-2010 and West Virginia from 2001-2007. Rodriguez posted a 60-26 record at West Virginia, finishing first in the Big East four times.

Rodriguez was 15-22 at Michigan, including 6-18 in Big Ten play, before being dismissed.

Just before the 2009 season, anonymous Michigan players told the Detroit Free Press that the Rodriguez-led program was exceeding NCAA limits on practice and training time.

The school later acknowledged that it was guilty of four violations. It was put on three years of probation, though Rodriguez and the school avoided major penalties in part because the NCAA agreed that the coach didn't fail to promote an atmosphere and compliance in his program.

I think this would put us in the driver's seat for McNamara wouldn't it? As far as I remember DickRod barely used his TEs.

i actually think this is a good hire. arizona has been dismal for years and this should spice things up out west and eventually give usc and oregon etc another team to worry about.

With some of the west coast kids he could have a hell of an offense.

I think it's a good fit, much better than Miiiiiiiiichigan. I like the guy, he definitely needs a good DC.

RichRod would have had a better season this year at UM, even better than UM is having now. Too bad Carr sabotaged the whole thing.

If I were an Arizona player, recruit, alum, or fan I would be thrilled to get this...

Good fit. Stoops left Arizona in a far better position than he found it, so RichRod should be able to turn things around sooner than later.

I think he'll do well there. He won't have anywhere near the pressure that he did at Michigan and he'll get talent. 8-4 seasons are successes there, and he'll get that pretty consistently, and once in a while, he'll have them in the Top 25. It's a good fit.

If only they had danced to "You Raise Me Up" by Josh Groban.
