I see this thread come up and normally pass over it but boy am I glad i didn't, runtheball's playlist mentioned on the front page, salute to you sir.

AT THE MOMENT...
Justin Vernon (Bon iver) does no wrong
City and colour
donovan woods (the widowmaker album)
Ben gibbard
Manchester orchestra
Joe purdy

I would embed some songs by these guys but I'm on my phone, should be easy to find on YouTube for most of em,

Also, I myself personally am a complete SUCKER for a good cover, but didn't wanna derail the thread of its original artists theme..

I'm famous!!!... well kind of... glad someone else likes city and colour- most people just like The Girl and think it weird I listen to their other songs. I maintain that I am weird, but not because I think City and Colour has 5-10 really solid songs.

At a friends recommendation I listen to a bit of Manchester Orchestra... can't really get into it now...maybe I will "get" it later- that happens to me a surprising amount of the time. (Congrats Buster, I finally like one alt-J song, "Breezeblocks").

I also can't post without posting something new. Anyway just watched "Once" the movie- its about Glen Hansard's start in music. Kind of interesting and cute.

Here is "Falling Slowly" by Glen Hansard

(Artist) - (Song Title)
Jose Gonzalez- Heartbearts
Fleet Foxes- Sim Sala Bim
Angus & Julia Stone- Big Jet Plane
Dawes- When My Times Comes
Johnny Cash- I Hung My Head
Iron and Wine- Jezebel
Arcade Fire- Wake Up

Other Artists: (which I probably already mentioned)
Jonsi/ Sigur Ros
Wilco
Beirut
Gregory Alan Isakov
Cold War Kids

Alot of this stuff I found from you guys, so thanks guys.

You're not alone, I prefer C&C's album sometimes to bring me your love/ little hell

Save your scissors, day old hate, like knives, Casey's song, off by heart (intro to the album) are all genius works by Dallas green, off the top of my head.

Though I do LOVE waiting... Off of bring me your love, I think it's the best song off that album, that's including the girl.

He's incredible live, if you have the chance to see him, do it.

As for Manchester orchestra they are the type of band that grows on you, I'm not sure how to put it but you have to be in a certain mood, i guess for a lack of a better word to appreciate them IMO.

If they aren't your thing however I would SERIOUSLY consider checking out Andy Hull (leader singer of Manchester orchestra) acoustic material, guy is a genius.

Sorry to bump again, but I just wanted to post as it is Bob Dylan's birthday. He was really the first artists I listened too (as in just him). I literally listened to almost nothing else for about 14 months. He just has so much great material and some many different sounds. Most of the music I own is Bob Dylan. About 500 songs worth (granted some are repeated on multiple albums). Basically everything I listen to now started with Dylan.
Barry-Feinsteins-iconic-p-007.jpg

Unfortunately, Dylan polices Youtube pretty hard so there aren't alot of Bob Dylan songs on youtube. He has so many awesome songs it is impossible to have a top 5 or top 10 or top 15 even. However, my 3 favorite albums are (in no order): Highway 61 Revisited, Blonde on Blonde, The FreeWheelin' Bob Dylan, The Times They are a Changing, Desire, and Blood on the Tracks. Yeah thats more than 3.

I know everyone know Hurricane and Like a Rolling Stone, etc. Personally, my favorite is Positively Fourth Street or Ballad of a Thin Man. Some other 'underrated' songs:
Sara
Sad-EyedLady of the Lowlands
Desolation Row (check these two out- they are unbelievable if you get the right version)
Simple Twist of Fate
Visions of Johanna
I Want You
Anything else on Highway 61
When the Ship Comes In
Boot of Spanish Leather
Changing of the Guards
Last Thoughts on Woody Guthrie
Mama, You've Been on my Mind

Okay thats enough, but if you're into Dylan check out the Bootleg Series Album's. They have so many good songs/ different version of Dylans own songs.

Also to note: Jakob Dylan (Bob's son to Sara) is the lead singer for The Wallflower (named after a Bob Dylan song). Check out "One Headlight" and " 6th Avenue Heartache" if you havent.

Sorry to post like Bruin Steve, I just got excited.

Since you both mentioned City and Colour, I had to mention Dallas Green's original band Alexisonfire (Those not familiar it is pronounced Alexis on fire). Love them, and am currently listening to:

Not the same genre clearly, nor the taste of many other, but I love them.

I haven't posted in this thread for a week, so I'll give you 3 songs in my weekly update (well about 10 days).

Crash Test Dummies

A band that I listened to a while back, and just pick up again. Brad Robert does the lead vocals and he has a great and distinctive voice. They are a bit weird, but have a unique sound. Their two best albums are The Ghosts That Haunt Me and God Shuffled His Feet. "Ghosts" is overall a bit slower and more depressing sounding. I like that a bit more right now, but both albums are fantastic. I think God Shuffled his feet is a more complete and more upbeat album (which draws in more people IMO). My favorite songs are The Psychic, I Think I'll Disappear Now and Mmmm Mmmm Mmmm from God Shuffled His feet album and Superman's Song and At My Funeral from the "Ghosts" album.

Here is Superman's Song:

<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/ihUIPlLw2ZE" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

I really enjoy the lyrics to there songs (this one especially, though the don't immediately make any sense). Try something from God Shuffled His Feet if this is a bit slow.

Sufjan Stevens:

A favorite of Buster's I'm sure his musics has already been posted in here. I have like The Dress Looks Nice on You for a while and may have posted that, but recently I have been listening to his Illinois Album (there is also a Michigan album). I would recommend Chicago and Casimir Pulaski Day. The guitar (what Sufjan is known for) and the lyrics are great in both of these. I also really like To Be Alone With You which I guess some people know from The OC ( I wouldn't know... I never watch that). Here is a version to that song on Youtube:

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/IEheCyu_xXc" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Tom Petty:

Hold with me here. Ok so everyone knows Free Fallin'. Great song. But Petty has a bunch of amazing stuff, I have always like Mary Jane's Last Dance and You Don't Know How it Feels (and alot of his other stuff). But recently I heard a song I didn't remember. A Face in the Crowd. Now it is my favorite Tom Petty song. Its from his Full Moon Fever album, which is awesome as it has Free Fallin' and I Won't Back Down as well. I won't bore you guys any longer as Petty is pretty well known:

Other songs/ Artists to note this week:
Dont Let it Bring You Down (Neil Young)
If I Wanted Someone (Dawes)
Dave Matthews Band

'cept you didn't mention any actual country music there...that's all Nashville pop.
Paisley once made good country music...but that ship sailed a couple albums ago.

Doesn't have to be old to be country man!
There is such a thing as modern country music. It just doesn't get mainstream airplay. Tons of incredible legit. country music out there. You won't find it on Froggy though!
Tons of great stuff coming out of TX and OK all the time.

I prefer more rocking music generally nowadays...but songwriting is always my top priority when it comes to music. But as a musician, I find myself prone to snobbery!

If you've never heard of him, give it a google. Pretty damn cool documentary on HBO or Showtime (I think it's "Searching for Sugarman" ) right now.

The diverse sounds in that lineup are applause worthy. When I saw Haim my head twitched backward haha

I'm thoroughly impressed. Mr. Zimmerman and his music/lyrics have played an important role in my life. Like Helen, whose face launched a thousand ships, his writing has launched or bolstered a thousand recording careers.

Highway 61 Revisited and Blonde on Blonde are my "go to" Dylan albums.
