Wiltfong said in the TV thread that, although we were hot early in Malik's recruitment, he does expect Malik to end up at scUM, with MSU the runner-up.

Hopefully Malik takes visits and we are able to make another run at him. He would be so great for us.

Also, some BONUS GOSSIP from the TV thread: when the odious Fister tried to act like he knows everything like he always does, our own IM8 executed a glorious smackdown. Do NOT try to drop Bosco knowledge on Ironman!

After Trumbetti and Hayes committed he wasn't the "need" we needed earlier.

Fister tried to say that Bosco's coach pushes kids to ND. Ironman told him he was full of it.

fister also used some smiley animated graphic thing when I asked a question, I think it was supposed to be funny then asked the same damn question in another thread. Wiltfong hates the dude, he follows recruiting waaaayyy to closely and still doesnt know ****.

Can't stand that guy. Just spews out **** and sees what sticks without regard for accuracy, while tweeting constantly at recruits. Basically my worst nightmare.

That he is looking at Central is a good thing, I believe. I live in Michigan, and South Bend is considered VERY "local".

more than likely he's going to Central with teammates to get them looks from CMU.

Distance will be an issue for McDowell I believe, but c'mon he is not looking at Central.

ESPN 150 is out. ESPN ranks Malik as the #69 prospect in the country. Said it before and I'll say it again, I think Malik is closer to that ranking at this point in time than he is a top 25 player. Malik has the physical ability to be the top player in this class, and I don't think there is a more physically impressive defensive linemen in the country. But he's raw, very raw and will need a lot of work before he's ready to play. Definite red shirt.

Pete said in his podcast that he's just not a need. ND staff has him in same class as Jay Hayes.

Love this kind of inside info. Wish we got more of it.

Great to hear, either way.

While that may be true...it's about a perception sometimes. He is a kid close to home that is highly ranked that could go to a rival school. If we are still planning on taking 2 more DL then we should be hard after this guy. Studs want to play with studs and the perception is that we don't desire to have a good player that is only a short distance away. I would just prefer to be seen putting a good effort in.

1 NG and 1 CAT, 0 DEs

With the series ending after 2014, I doubt the staff is worried about playing keep away with Michigan.

We already have 2 DEs in Hayes and Trumbetti. We still want a NT and a ROLB. McDowell isn't a fit for either of those positions. The staff might be done with DE recruiting.

I would just prefer to be seen putting a good effort in.

Recruiting resources are scarce. I doubt the staff can afford to lavish attention on a non-essential recruit simply for the sake of "perception".

Edit: I'm clearly not into the whole brevity thing. /grumble

I don't agree. From everything I have seen, it's 1 NG, 1 DE with flexibility to move to either other positions (Nelson) or swing to DT, and at least 1 CAT (hopefully Andrew Williams).

We are going to load up on DL considering we are going to lose Tuitt, Nix and Kona, and with Hounshell's career in jeopardy.

It makes sense. I hate to see Malik go elsewhere but I don't know if there's a whole lot to distinguish him from Hayes. Hope we get Mailk, but won't cry if we don't.

This was exactly the point I was trying to make. Thank you for helping me out :thewave:

IMO, Trumbetti ends up at CAT if we whiff on our top CAT targets. Which I don't see happening.

Only guys that are DEs that I can think of are Solomon Thomas, Deondre Clark, Anthony Moten, McDowell and then Nelson. I don't think the staff is really pushing for a DE. Nelson is an exception not part of the norm.

I don't think there are many names, but you only need one. I think ND is in a great position with both Nelson and Holley, both of whom offer flexibility to play DE and another position (Nelson OLB or OT, Holley DT). Pruitt and Enoch are others who could play both, but they are lesser prospects on our board I believe.

Frazier, Clark, Curtis, Stanley are all more NG only prospects, and we want 1.

Then CAT our #1 realistic guy is Williams. Carter is a dream. Mustipher's teammate Aniebaum is probably a backup option.

Yeah, I think you're right about the 1 NT type and 1 guy that could be both/other. The bolded guys all seem like NT's, but I wonder if the staff may view any of them like EV? In other words, a guy we all thought has/had interior DL written all over him, but somebody the staff sees more as an outside guy. Going off just body type, Hayes seems like a guy that could be used outside, as well as inside (like Tuitt). But then again, McDowell does too.

If the staff believes Hayes and Trumbetti are every bit as good, if not better, than McDowell as DE, then I'm even happier to have to have both those guys on board now. But it seems like McDowell wouldn't totally be a redundant player in this class.
