Student Seating at football games

This is a bad idea. Even when there was assigned seating, people would move up, or guests would sneak in and it would be overly crowded. Now, people are going to forgo tailgating because they won't get a good seat otherwise. Tailgating until 3 and then making your way into the stadium, knowing where you would sit was great. The atmosphere in the student section has never been the problem at a Notre Dame football game. I don't understand why they had to change this.

maybe to keep students from getting drunk til 3? I have no idea what is all behind this but my guess is there will be the same number of students at the game and they will all have a good time whether they remember it or not. There is most likely no perfect process, the school chose what they felt was best, it may change again next year if it doesn't work out, who knows.

I think this change happened because people on the board got stuck with bad seats many years in a row and saw people in front of them with much better seats who couldn't give a crap about the game. So they said "eff this lottery crap."

Interesting how things run in cycles. During my time at ND ('69-73) it was done this way, though the student section was shifted somewhat more toward midfield and away from the end zone.

This is how I remember it ('70 – '74). Some of the craziest and most vocal students were near the top of the stadium. The stadium was smaller, of course, at 59,075 – if I remember correctly. A bit more intimate.

Then there was "The Naked Kahuna" doing his striptease at the end of the third quarter and "passing" SMC students (an early version of crowd surfing) around the student section. While the male "passers" were enthusiastic, not all the female "passees" were. It was a short-lived tradition.

Not how it's done in the south. Not saying it's better or not, just saying I've been to most sec stadiums, none work that way.

SEC schools don't do assigned seating right? My cousin went to UGA and I thought she said it was all first come first serve of those who had tickets (not all students have football tickets).

Now if you want front row seats like I enjoyed my final two years you will prolly have to get there by 8 or even earlier if I had to guess. If people show up hours early for bball games a lot more people will be inlclined to go and go even earlier for football games. I bet there will already be a line by then. tailgating should be an 8-2/3 activity. you cant really tailgate while you are in line in front of the stadium.

I was always one of the first students in the stadium because I cared way more about the game than the tailgating and was stuck in row 40 something my senior year and it pissed me off when some drunk people would stumble in well after the game started, sit 20 rows ahead of me, then leave early after spending the entire game turned around talking to their friends. The lottery and assigned seating is great if you're one of the students with great seats, but for the rest, it can be pretty frustrating. Students will just have to prioritize about whether they care more about tailgating or good seats.

As an incoming freshman I understand very little of this. But all that matters to me is that I'll be in the student section. At this point I don't care where.

I think the concern is that you may not be able to stay in the student section. Like some have said, if you don't go with a group or have someone to save your seat if you hit the concessions or bathroom, someone else may grab your open seat if they see it available. Then what do you do if you can't get your general seating back? You don't have a ticket for anywhere else in the stadium and it's always sold out.

Just a thought.

instead of seniors at midfield shouldn't it be first x rows id rather be up front in the endzone than in the back at the 50, maybe that's just me.

If you're in the endzone, you can't see a durn thing from the first few rows. I was in the second row endzone my freshman year and it was the worst view I've ever had at a sporting event. It's awesome if Golden Tate is catching a touchdown right in front of your face, but you lose all depth perception and can't see any action past your own red zone.
